Soma, the radiant one, has touched every treasure of heaven and earth, and now, he is called to come to the wealth laid out here in this sacred space. Wise and subtle, Soma sets forth, swift as chariots, seeking the offering that is beloved by Indra. Praised by many thoughtful voices, he is honored as the great divinity, dwelling where the immortals reside. Set in motion, Soma is guided along a shining path, urged onward by the pressing stones of the ritual. He shakes his horns like a youthful bull, full of strength and vigor, leading his herd. Adorned with golden ornaments, he advances swiftly, his rays shining, becoming the lord of the rivers. Drinking in the treasures, Soma surpasses rough places, flowing down into the waiting vessels. In the troughs, the grains purify him as he moves with great strength, preparing him for his purpose. Ten fingers and seven thoughts cleanse this most intoxicating one, Soma, who wields his own power. The skilled pressers pour out his juice for delight, like a swiftly flowing stream. With wisdom and resolve, the path of the wise is followed, seeking the cows, and joining in the exhilarating drink. Soma is released, though he is unattained and hard to cross in the waters, flowing through the filter to be purified for Indra’s enjoyment. With the mind of the purifier, Soma courses through the filter; with steadfast resolve, he takes his seat. Reverently, the drops of Soma flow for Indra, offered by the makers in a great sacrifice. Purifying and unchanging, Soma moves through all splendors, standing like a hero among the cows. Like the nourishing ridge of heaven, his pressed stream flows freely through the filter, creative and abundant. Soma, wise and self-purifying, drives away every covering, letting the waters flow unhindered. Like rivers descending, striking obstacles, Soma’s swift streams flow as the pressing stones urge them on. Well-pressed, the drops rush toward Indra like rains upon the earth, eager and abundant. Soma, exhilarating and joyful, flows through the filter, destroying demons with divine action. He rushes into the vessels, poured around the purifier, growing with hymns sung in sacrifice. Soma surpasses the three luminous realms; rising, he shines in the sky, desiring and urging on the sun itself. The sages, makers of sacrifice at its summit, sing forth, placing what is dearest before Soma’s gaze. The strong one is cleansed by men with their thoughts, as wise ones seek help for divine purpose. Let the intense, honeyed stream settle in its seat—beautiful, true, and ready for drinking. Pressed Soma flows around the mountain peaks within the purifier, present in all delights. He is the sage and the poet, sweet and born of exhilarating juice, present in every joy. All the gods together desire to drink of him, for he is present in every delight. He holds all desirable treasures in his hands; he is present in all delights. He milks both vast earth and heaven together as a mother, present in every joy. Swiftly he moves around both earth and heaven, bearing prizes, present in all delights. Purified in the vessels, powerful Soma cries aloud—ever present in all delights. Soma, whatever splendid hymn or wealth, whether divine or earthly, bring it to us, purified and radiant. For Indra and Soma are lords of light, guardians of cattle, nourishing our thoughts as true masters. The purified bull, thundering with life, settles upon the grass, the tawny one approaching his dwelling. Thoughts stir in the seed of the bull, the mothers of the calf, the son. Perhaps the purified one places the embryo in the fertile ones, those who yield the bright milk. O learned ones, approach and stand firm; place fear among our enemies. O purified Soma, grant us wealth. Cast down the strength, vigor, and vitality of the enemy, whether he is far or near. The inspired sage, Soma, flows forth unimpeded with his streams, confronting all rivals for the favor of the gods.
