From the summit of the cosmic ocean, Indu sends forth speech, awakening the vessel that drips with honeyed sweetness. The ever-praised tree, full of nourishing milk within, pours its bounty for the generations of humanity. Soma, the sacred essence, pours forth and rushes to the beloved seat of heaven, a poet endowed with the wisdom of sages. O purifying one, Indu, bring us wealth adorned with a thousand splendors, riches that are truly ours. Soma, purified and radiant, flows with a thousand streams—powerful and unconquered—offered to Vayu and Indra. O singers, praise this inspired Soma, pressed for the favor of the gods. The Somas, rich in a thousand powers, are purified to grant strength, their praises rising for divine favor. For the gaining of strength, O radiant Indu, purify for us great riches and glorious heroism. May those Indus, the gods who are pressed, purify for us a thousandfold wealth and heroic glory. Like swift horses urged by charioteers, they rush forth unrestrained, breaking through barriers for the sake of strength. The Indus, strong and flowing, settle in the hands like cows returning to their calf. The beloved, exhilarating, roaring Soma, purified, pleases Indra—may he destroy all enemies. The purified ones, shining like the sun, drive away hostility, seated in the womb of the pressing-stone. The sage spreads himself out, resting upon the wave of the river, bearing the work that is most desired. When, with their voices, the five clans united with their kin purify the pressing-stone, all the gods delight in the juice of this mighty one, especially when he is clothed with cows. Being pressed out, he runs forth, casting off his coverings to join with his yoke-fellow. Pure and young, like the offspring of Vivasvat, he cleanses himself with his kin, making the cows pass through the strainer. He travels beyond obstacles, across narrow paths, seeking the wealth of cattle, stirring up the one who knows him. The streams come together, purifying the lord of nourishment, as the swift ones seize his back. Soma, you have touched all treasures heavenly and earthly—come now to the wealth that is here. Wise and subtle, Soma goes forth with swift chariots, seeking Indra’s offering. He is praised by many with thoughtful devotion, for the great divinity where the immortals dwell. Set in motion, he is led along the shining path as the pressing-stones urge him onward. He shakes his horns, the youthful bull of the herd, bearing strength and vigor. Advancing with golden ornaments, swift and radiant, he becomes lord of the rivers. Drinking the treasures, he passes beyond rough places and descends into the vessels. To be cleansed, the grains purify him in the troughs, moving with great strength. Ten fingers and seven thoughts cleanse him, most intoxicating, with his own weapon. Skillful pressers pour out the juice for Soma’s delight, a stream flowing swiftly. With skillful resolve, following the wise path and seeking the cows, we join with the exhilarating drink. Release the Soma, unattained and hard to cross in the waters, through the filter—purify it for Indra to drink. With the mind of the purifier, Soma flows through the filter, settling with resolve in his seat. With reverence, the drops of Soma flow for Indra, for the great offering of the makers. Purifying and unchanging, Soma flows through all splendors; like a hero, he stands among the cows. Like the nourishing ridge of heaven, the creative stream of pressed Soma flows freely through the filter. Wise and self-purifying, Soma drives away coverings, letting the waters flow. Like rivers descending, striking obstacles and pressing stones, the swift Soma streams have flowed. The well-pressed drops, like rains upon the earth, rush toward Indra—the Somas move. The exhilarating, joyful intoxication of Soma flows through the filter, destroying demons, divine in action.
