O Ashvins, your kinship and bond are ever the same, unwavering and steadfast. May your gracious favor be near to us, for your chariot traverses the realms and both worlds, carrying your blessings across all existence. Let your favor come close, and bring with you thousands of cows and horses, the symbols of abundance and prosperity. Do not pass us by with these gifts; let your favor remain by our side. The swift, reddish one has become water—the radiant light that upholds truth itself. Let your favor be near to us, O Ashvins. Just as the tree was split well, as if by a sharp axe, let your favor be near. Like a fortress, bravely break apart the oppressive, black host that threatens us; let your favor be near. From house to house, I exalt the guest who is much-loved—Agni, your refuge. With words of longing, I praise him. The people, bearing offerings, sing hymns to him as they do to Mitra, with clarified butter and devotion. Agni, the all-knowing, is sent forth by the eager gods to carry offerings to heaven. We have approached the greatest, noble Agni—the slayer of Vṛtra—whose renowned voice resounds powerfully in the forefront. Immortal and radiant, Agni dispels darkness and is ever worthy of worship; to him, offerings are poured with ghee. The people worship him without hindrance, pouring libations with orderly ladles. This new thought, O Agni, is offered to you—delightful, skillful, unfailing, wondrous guest. May this most auspicious and beloved offering please you, O Agni; may you grow strong through our praise. May she, full of splendor and glory, bring us great fame in our struggle against obstacles. Like a horse, a cow, a swift chariot, or mighty Indra, the lord of truth whose fame spreads far and wide, the people praise what is praiseworthy. Gopavana, with words, has chosen you, Agni, descendant of Angiras. O pure one, hear our invocation. The people worship you, Agni, unhindered, for the gaining of strength; awaken to help us overcome obstacles. I sing forth with renowned voice and joyful spirit, like the cries of victorious hosts and the roaring heads of the four. Four swift ones, the most powerful, with splendid gifts, carry me forward, as a family advances toward its goal. I have shown you, O mighty one, the ford of the Paruṣṇī; these waters do not give horses, nor is any mortal greater than the most powerful. Yoke, O Agni, the horses summoned by the gods, as a charioteer would; be the ancient priest in the assembly. May the god speak to us, O gods, most wise; grant us all treasures. You, O youngest son of strength, called upon, are true and worthy of sacrifice. Agni is the lord of thousands, master of wealth and hundreds, head of the wise and riches. To him, as to a wheel-rim, let the skilled ones bow with joint offerings. O Angiras, bring the sacrifice nearer. To the ever-youthful Agni, for breaking through, address your manifold voice; urge on the strong one with a good hymn. With whose army, O Agni, of far-seeing gaze, shall we cross over the Panis among the cattle? Let not the clans of the gods, like cows at milking, forsake us; let us not be like the thin one of the barren cow. Let not the enmities of the whole assembly, nor hostilities or distress, overwhelm us as a wave overwhelms a boat. To your strength, O Agni, we bow; the peoples praise you, O god. Destroy the unfriendly for us. Whatever companions you have who seek wealth, O Agni, bring us wealth; make us wide and strong. Let us not, in this great wealth, bear the burdens of others; win for us the full and abundant wealth. Let ill-will fall upon another, not upon us, O Agni; increase our strength and might. Whomever the reverent or ill-intentioned has chosen, Agni truly supports that one in growth. From the farther to the nearer shore, carry us across; wherever I am, bring us safely there. For we have known you of old, O Agni, through the favor of our father; now we seek your good will. Now I call upon wondrous Indra, lord of might, accompanied by the Maruts—for you do not abandon him. This Indra, friend of the Maruts, struck off the head of Vritra with his hundred-jointed thunderbolt.
