O generous and mighty Indra, your favor is well known to us, for you have guided Etaśa to success in his quest for wealth and brought ten herds under your command. Just as you supported Kaṇva in his sacrifice and the enduring rituals, subduing his adversaries and granting him protection in the cow-stall, so too have you bestowed upon us the radiant lineage and wealth of the Hari. In ancient times, you, Maghavan, drank the pressed Soma with Manu and Sāṃvaraṇa, honored as the guest at their sacrifice. At their feasts, you brought together nourishment and prosperity. You also awakened Praskaṇva from his slumber, leading him to safety, and with your strength you sought out thousands of cows, becoming a wolf to the Dasyu, ever victorious. To those who do not recognize us with hymns, though inspired by the seer, we say: speak anew of Indra, who is ever eager to bestow gifts. It is for him, the flawless one for whom the seven-headed hymn was composed, who dwells in the highest abode of the triple realm, that all worlds resound; he was the first to gain manly strength. Indra, our giver of treasures, is the one we invoke, for we remember his most recent favor and seek to reach the herd rich in cows. Whomever you favor, O generous one, attains abundance of wealth. Therefore, we, the singers of praises who have pressed the Soma, call upon you, Maghavan. When, Indra, will your generosity overflow again? When will you stand beside the worshipper? May your divine gifts return to us again and again, for your bounty is ever sought. With surpassing might, you struck down Krivi with your weapons and proclaimed the defeat of Śuṣṇa. When you propped up and spread out the distant heaven, you first became lord of the earth. You are the friend of every noble, every Dāsa, every ally, and even every foe; among the Arya and the fierce, you win wealth for your worshippers. Swiftly, the inspired ones have sung honey-sweet, ghee-flowing hymns; for us, wealth and manly power have spread, and the Soma-draughts have been pressed for you, Indra. As before, O Śakra, you drank the pressed Soma with Manu, the son of Vivasvat, and rejoiced in the hymns with Trita. For Pṛṣadhra, Medhya, and Mātariśvan, you were delighted by the pressed Soma, and with Daśaśipra, Daśoṇya, and Syūmaraśmi, you drank Soma, ever straight in your ways. For the bold composer of hymns who drank Soma, Viṣṇu strode out the three steps, upholding the law of Mitra. For those whose praises please you, O mighty Indra, in the contest for prizes, we offer our hymns, desiring fame, as a cow yields abundant milk. You, our giver, father, and lord, the mighty and much-invoked Maghavan, may you grant us wealth of cows and horses. Whomever you favor increases in wealth and prosperity; we, desiring riches, invoke you, Indra, lord of treasures and a hundred powers. O Aditya, when will you release us and protect our births? May your immortal power, established in heaven, remain steadfast at the fourth offering. To those you favor, O generous Indra, you grant teaching and instruction; hear our songs and excellent praise, O treasure-giver, and listen to the call of the Kanvas. The ancient hymn is recited for you, Indra; many great and truthful praises have been composed, and the singer’s thoughts flow forth. Indra has shaken forth abundant wealth, uniting earth and sun. The bright, pure, and strong ones—the heads of cattle and the Somas—have gladdened you, Indra. We invoke you, supreme among the generous, foremost of the mighty, best of benefactors, knower of cattle, and lord of wealth. You have increased the life of Kutsa, Atithigva, and others, day by day; therefore, we call on you, Indra, tamer of horses, possessor of a hundred powers, with our praises. Let the flowing streams pour forth the essence of sweetness for us, both those pressed far away and those pressed nearby—the drops of Soma. Destroy all hatreds and drive them away; let all treasures come to us. Even among the chosen, the exhilarating portions are found where you, Indra, delight in Soma. Come nearer, Indra, with friendly thoughts and aids, with the most auspicious, helpful, and restful presence. Make us victorious, lord of the people, and bring us offspring and wealth. Let those who praise you with hymns purify their strength with your powers. May we be nearest to your help in your battles; with our offerings and divine invocations, we seek your favor. I, Indra, eager for strength, always go to the contest with praises, seeking you as the tamer of darkness, the tamer of horses, the foremost among the eager. Your heroic deeds, Indra, are celebrated by poets who pour forth clarified butter and honor you with their thoughts. They praise you for help and good deeds, delighting you as did Samvarana and Krisha; so delight in us, Indra. May all the gods come to us and approach us—may the Vasus, Rudras, and Maruts hear our call. May Pūṣan, Viṣṇu, and Sarasvatī attend our invocation; may the seven rivers, the waters, the wind, the mountains, the lord of the forest, and the earth hear our call. Whatever wealth you possess, Indra, most generous and best of the generous, remember us in the assembly. May Bhaga, the giver, increase our share for giving, O slayer of Vṛtra. O lord of the contest and of men, lead us to strength, wise one. With our offerings and divine invocations, may our striving be heard. Indeed, noble blessings exist, Indra, for the life of people. Grant them to us, generous one, and pour forth nourishing food for the worshipper. We offer you our praises, Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt; you are ours. Bestow great, abundant, and splendid wealth quickly, and gladden Praskanva with it. The many heroic deeds of Indra are proclaimed and come near to us. Your wealth, fierce as a wolf, is turned against the enemy. A hundred white bulls shine in the sky like stars; by their greatness, they do not press down the heavens. Thus, O Indra, we recall your wondrous deeds and call upon you, the mighty and generous, to bless us with strength, wealth, and protection, as you have done for the noble ones of old.
