As the radiant dawns rise in the sky, two bright ones appear each day, faithfully following the divine ordinance set by Indra and Agni. In their wake, the rivers are loosed from their bonds and flow freely, their paths unimpeded. We pray that, in the great assembly, none may hinder us as we seek blessings. Indra, the son of the charger, the golden one, takes on many forms and receives countless praises. His generous gifts and heroic deeds strengthen our thoughts and inspire our songs. May these noble powers, whatever they accomplish for us, uplift our minds and grant us fortitude, unhindered by others in the assembly. Let us offer fair praises to Indra, the mighty and swift hero. Even now, by his strength, he shatters the strongholds of Shushna, conquering foes so that the sunlit waters may flow. May our voices strengthen him, the true sacrificer, that his might may continue to break the bonds of darkness and let the radiant rivers run. As our ancestors did—Mandhātṛ and the Angirases—so may we, with Indra and Agni, find triple protection and become lords of riches. Turning to Varuṇa and the Maruts, we sing for abundance. They are the wise, the most excellent, who, like a vigilant herdsman, guard the cattle and the thoughts of humankind. May our united voices join with the praises of the fathers, and with the hymns of Nabhāka, honor him who stands in the midst of the seven rivers, the middle one among the seven sisters. Varuṇa encompasses the nights and sets the dawns in their places by his power; he has established all things visible. The three dawns, obeying his ordinance, have grown and shone with increasing brilliance. He has fixed the pillars of the earth, the ancient steps of the mother, for this is Varuṇa’s path—the path of the herdsman who guards all. He upholds the worlds and knows the secret names of the shining ones. Like the sky, the sage Varuṇa nurtures many forms. All works are established in him, as spokes on a wheel’s hub. Trita, the charioteer, worships him; within his enclosure, cows are yoked and horses harnessed, all in harmony with his will. From his own abode, Varuṇa surveys all creatures, measuring the dwellings and going before the cities. All the gods follow his ordinance. Like the ocean, he flows downward and rises toward the sky when the sacrificial formula is uttered among the gods. With radiant, mysterious steps, he ascends the heavens, and all rejoice together in his presence. His three white, perceptive realms traverse the fixed abode of Varuṇa three times. Among the seven, he rejoices, and all share in that joy. He purifies the white ones and guides the black ones according to order, claiming the ancient domain. With his pillar, he supports both worlds, like the unborn one sustaining the sky. Let all rejoice together in this place. Varuṇa, the mighty knower of all, has upheld the sky and measured the expanse of the earth. As sovereign, he sits with all worlds assembled before him; all their ordinances are his. Thus, let us honor Varuṇa, the exalted, the wise guardian of immortality. May he grant us triple-shielded protection, and may Heaven and Earth embrace us in their care. O Varuṇa, instill wisdom, resolve, and skill within me as I seek understanding. With these gifts, may we overcome all misfortunes and ascend the well-constructed boat to safety. The stones themselves, O Aśvins, call upon you with prayers; O Nāsatyas, come for the drinking of Soma, that all may rejoice together. As the priest has called you, O Aśvins, with songs for the Soma, so too do we invite you, O Nāsatyas, for the sacred drink. Thus, as the wise have done before, I call you for help, that all may share in the joy of your presence. Now, let these praises be raised for Agni, the wise priest of the sacrifice, by the inspired poet. To Jātavedas, the discerning, we offer our gifts and declare our excellent hymn. Like rays of light, Agni’s sharp brilliance shines forth; with his teeth, he devours the woods. His tawny, smoke-bannered flames, driven by the wind, strive upward, each moving on its own path. Kindled together, Agni’s flames appear like the rays of dawn, traversing the dark spaces as his offspring spread across the earth. As he moves, Agni consumes the plants, producing nourishment, and the reddish flames return again and again. With his many tongues, Agni licks and shines, his flames rattling and glowing in the woods. In the waters, Agni is established; he restrains the healing herbs and is born anew in the womb of creation. From the clarified butter of the offering, his flame shines forth, tongues extending at his mouth as the oblation is placed. For the giver of milk and meat, for the wise one who bears Soma, we serve Agni with hymns. With reverence, we approach him—the noble priest—with kindling sticks, pure as the Bhṛgu, invoked by men as the Angiras. For Agni, the sage joins with the sage, friend with friend, and he is kindled anew. To the sage who serves, Agni grants wealth in thousands and food rich in heroes. Mighty Agni, brother with red horses and pure in vow, accept this hymn of mine. Praised by me, you are brought forth for the mighty; as cows gather in the cattle-yard, so do all assemble for you. For you, O Agni, most Angiras-like, all prosperous homes are offered separately, each seeking your favor. Wise, intelligent, and thoughtful, Agni is stirred for the seat of the offering, where insight and devotion meet in sacred fire. Thus, the gods are honored, the worlds upheld, and the assembly rejoices in the eternal order, protected and blessed by the divine.
