As the glorious Sun, the radiant guide of all, ascends the sky—exalted and worthy—his light spreads across the world. At his rising, the restless and eager creatures, both two-footed and four-footed, settle down in stillness, their energy momentarily stilled by his presence. In this sacred hour, we turn our thoughts to the gods, calling upon each for help, for favor, and for the strength that only they can grant. With minds filled with reverence and praise, we invoke them, honoring them with our devotion. For the gods, united in their purpose for Manu, the ancestor of humankind, join together as generous bestowers of gifts. May they, today and always, know the paths we walk. To you, sinless ones—O Varuṇa and Mitra—we proclaim our praises. No deceit can touch the mortal who keeps your ordinances, O guardians of truth. Such a one crosses over to prosperity and abundant wealth, secure in your favor. He is blessed with offspring, unharmed, and grows in every way according to the law. Without your guidance, there is only conflict. But with you, Aryaman, Mitra, and Varuṇa—givers of gifts—the favored one journeys safely along the path, protected by your watchful presence. Even on the open plain, you descend to help; even in difficulty, you make the way easy. Let all dangers, even the swelling thunderbolt, perish far from us. At sunrise, O rulers of the world, whatever order you establish, and again at sunset, at awakening, and at midday, you, all-knowing ones, set the rhythms of the universe. At the approach of night, you, mighty ones, lay down order as a shelter for the worshipper. May we, O Vasus, ever stand close to you within this order. Whatever blessings you bestow at sunrise or at midday, O all-knowing ones, upon Manu and upon those who offer and are wise—grant us those gifts. Like a son choosing sustenance, we seek your abundant favor, O sovereign Ādityas. May we obtain it through our offerings, so that we never lack for wealth. In the sacred assembly, the thirty-three gods gather upon the holy grass, knowing well the twofold food—the offerings of mortals and the gifts of immortality. Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman—those who grant us favor—come with Agni and their consorts, invoked by the sacred vaṣaṭ-call. May these unfailing guardians protect us from above and below, from the front and all sides, with all their might. Let it be as the gods desire, and let no one, not even a hostile mortal, diminish their rightful portion. Seven are their spears, seven their glories; sevenfold, they have established their splendors in the world. Among the gods, each has his unique form and deed. One, tawny, powerful, and ever-youthful, harnesses the golden chariot. Another, radiant and wise, is settled in the womb. One stands steadfast, holding an iron axe. Another wields the thunderbolt, ever ready to strike down foes. One, pure and mighty, bears sharp weapons and heals the waters. Another guards the hidden path like a watchful thief, knowing all treasures. One, of wide stride, traverses three steps, bringing joy to the gods. Two move together with a companion, dwelling as if in a foreign land. Two sovereigns have established their seat in the sky, pouring streams of clarified butter as a model for all. Some, singing together, have composed a great chant, by which they made the sun shine. There are no children among you, O gods, nor any unworthy; all are truly great. Thus praised, you, the thirty-three worshipful gods of Manu, have taken your seat, destroyers of foes. Protect us, save us, and speak on our behalf. Do not lead us far from the ancestral and human paths. O universal gods who are present here, and Vaiśvānara as well, grant us wide shelter for our cattle and horses. He who offers sacrifice, who presses the Soma and prepares the sacred food, makes himself known to Indra through holy words. He who presents the sacrificial cake and swiftly offers Soma, is delivered from distress by Shakra. For such a one, the radiant chariot guided by the gods becomes manifest; he prospers, conquering all adversaries. In his home, rich with offspring, Iḷā, ever full of milk, yields her abundance day by day, unfailing. Those spouses who, with united mind, press Soma and hasten together, are granted perpetual blessing by the gods. Noble ones approach the well-arranged sacrificial seat; in contests for wealth, they are never left behind. They do not lose the favor of the gods, nor become objects of dislike; ever they shine with great renown. With sons and daughters, they enjoy the full span of life, adorned with golden ornaments. May those who perform the rites and have acquired wealth gladden us for immortality; having prepared the offering, may they place it among the gods. Finally, we choose the protection of the mountains and rivers, and the companionship of Vishnu, seeking shelter and guidance in their eternal presence.
