Indra, the mighty giver, may bestow wealth upon the devotee, or Sarasvati, the gracious and radiant one, may grant riches; or perhaps you, O splendid deity, may shower blessings upon the worshipper. The king shines in his grandeur, as do the other rulers who follow the path of Sarasvati. Like Parjanya, the rain-bringer, the king extends his bounty, bestowing thousands and tens of thousands in gifts. On this day, I call upon the swift chariot for aid. The two Ashvins, ever well-invoked, approach along Rudra’s path, standing in service to Surya. Bhujyu, ancient and much-desired, foremost in contests, is protected by your favor, O Ashvins, kept free from hatred and harm. Here, O abundant Ashvins, we call you near with reverence; may you come to the house of your worshipper and grant your help. Around your wondrous chariot, the wheels turn ceaselessly; whatever you desire is fulfilled. May your favor, O lords of beauty, rush to us as a cow hastens to her calf. Your chariot, Ashvins, is supported on three pillars, its reins gleaming with gold, circling heaven and earth. With this renowned chariot, O Nasatyas, come to us. You have granted ancient favor to Manu, and in heaven you drew barley with the wolf. Today, too, with your graciousness, O Ashvins, we praise you. Come to us, lords of swift steeds, by the paths of truth—the very paths by which you granted great dominion to Trisiras and Trasadasyu. Here, vigorous ones, Soma is pressed for you; O men of abundant wealth, come to drink the Soma in the house of your devotee. Ascend your chariot, Ashvins, rich in treasures and adorned with golden chests; harness the nourishing gifts and come to us. With those very means by which you saved Paktha, Adhrigu, and Babhru from harm, swiftly come, O Ashvins, and heal the afflicted among us. When the Adhrigu cows call, even today, O Ashvins, we invoke you, skilled in song, with our hymns. With those powers, O vigorous ones—encompassing and mighty—with which you made Krivi prosper, come here, bringing the greatest nourishment. With those means, O Ashvins, I, your devotee, call upon you even today, bowing to you with reverence. At dawn, at sunrise, on our journeys, O lords of beauty, O Rudra-guided ones, protect us from mortal foes and from Rudra’s wrath. For the easy path, at morning, with your chariot or with your powers, O Ashvins, I call to you as a loving son calls to his father. Swift of mind and full of delight, come quickly with your many gifts, even from afar, to aid us. Come, O Ashvins, by a path full of horses, O honey-drinkers, O wondrous ones, bringing cows and gold. With excellent reward, heroism, and unconquered wealth, may we, in your coming, receive all your blessings, O lords of swift steeds. Let us desire the favor of the earth and offer sacrifice to Jatavedas, whose smoke rises and whose flame cannot be seized. Agni, the tamer of all peoples and minds, is praised in song; I also honor the chariots that contend for the prize. For Agni, there is no hindrance; his nourishment and abundance are unrestrained, and he finds wealth at the offering. His flame arises, shining and undying—the splendor of the devourer, the radiant leader of hosts. Rise up, O Agni of proper rites, praised and filled with the compassion of the goddess; shine forth with your great light, O resplendent one. Come to us with good praises, bearing offerings continually, as you have become the messenger and bearer of oblations. I call upon Agni, the ancient priest of humankind; with this praise and this voice, I honor and extol him. With sacrifices, we approach him whose power is wondrous, whom the kindly ones awaken—a steadfast friend among people, unwavering in truth. Those true to the order, immortal and accomplished in sacrifice, draw near to him with words, delighting in the abode of reverence. Let our well-ordered sacrifices go to the most Angiras-like among us, the most renowned priest among the peoples. O Agni, your undying, shining flames are like powerful stallions. So, lord of strength, grant us wealth and heroism, protect us in our offspring, our children, and in battle. Whenever Agni, the lord of the people, is pleased, he repels all threats. Hear, O Agni, my new hymn, heroic lord of the people; burn up the sorcerers and demons with your heat. No mortal enemy can overpower the one who has offered to Agni, the bearer of oblations. The seer, desiring wealth, praised you, O swift giver of riches; for great treasure, we kindle you. Ushana Kāvya appointed you as priest, Jatavedas, for Manu’s sacrifice. All the gods together made you their messenger; you became the first, worthy of sacrifice, to be heard. Let a man make this immortal, shining, black-tracked, soaring Agni his messenger. We invoke him, ever ready, bright with pure flames—Agni of the peoples, ageless, ancient, and worthy of praise.
