Indra, the mighty and much-invoked king of the heavens, traversed the vast midspace, exhilarated by the Soma, when he shattered the enclosure that held back the treasures. With his power, he drove forth the cows for the Angirases, revealing those long hidden and pushing the barriers forward. By Indra’s strength, the shining realms of heaven remain firm and unshaken, steadfast in their place. As praise rises for Indra in battle, swelling like waters, his exhilarations rush to him. Indra grows greater through hymns and songs, and he brings good fortune to his singers. His tawny steeds, eager for Soma, carry him swiftly to the sacrifice, to the generous offerings prepared in his honor. With the foam of the waters, Indra struck off Namuci’s head, overcoming every hostility. With his powers, he cast down the demons who sought to ascend the sky and escape, thwarting their ambitions. Indra destroyed the assembly of those who did not offer, scattering them in all directions; as the Soma-drinker, he became supreme. The people sing forth to Indra, much-invoked and much-praised, with hymns, calling upon him with mighty songs. Possessing double strength and great might, Indra upholds heaven and earth; with his power, he split the mountains and released the waters. Alone, he rules as king, slaying foes and guiding his followers to victory. Indra’s exhilaration is praised—strong, victorious in battle, world-creating, radiant in glory. With this power, he discovered the lights for Ayu and Manu, delighting as he shines forth upon the sacred grass. Today, as in days past, thoughtful singers praise him, and the wives of the mighty one, the victorious waters, offer their homage day by day. Indra’s is the great power, the strength and wisdom; his mind sharpens the thunderbolt, making it desirable and effective. For him, the sky increases manliness, the earth increases fame, and the waters and mountains urge him on. Vishnu of vast abode, Mitra, and Varuna praise Indra, and his host rejoices after the Maruts. Indra, bull among people, was born most mighty, taking up all lordships together. He alone accomplishes all obstacles; no one else achieves a greater deed. Whenever those who compose hymns call upon him for help, Indra wins the light for them and their companions. For their great dwelling, may all forms enter, and may Indra be gladdened for victory, the lord of might. With new songs, the singers praise Indra, king of peoples, manly hero, most mighty. In him, the hymns delight, and all things worthy of praise flow to him like waters into the sea. The eldest king in the contest, Indra is summoned with excellent praise, the mighty giver of prizes to companions. His deep, unfailing exhilarations are broad and ever fresh, full of joy in the hero’s bounty. In the kindled fires, in chosen places, people call upon Indra with speech, those for whom he brings victory. The youthful ones approach him, as do the peoples with their deeds; Indra, maker of wide space, is priestly power, seer, and much-invoked—great, with mighty powers. He is to be praised and invoked, true in being and mighty in strength; though one, he surpasses all. With praises, chants, and songs, peoples magnify Indra, the leader to wealth, the bringer of light in battles, the one who overcomes foes in combat. May Indra, much-invoked and protector, carry his followers safely across all dangers, like a boat to well-being. Indra, grant favor with your gifts and the path to prosperity; bring your goodwill to your devotees. Come, Indra, for you are truly delighted; drink this Soma, for your sacred seat is prepared. Let your two long-haired steeds, yoked by prayer, bring you here; listen to our hymns. We, the Soma-pressers, call you with prayer, having prepared the Soma. Come to us, approach our well-praised offering, and drink, O fair-jawed one, of the sweet drink. We pour for you so that it fills your bellies and flows over your limbs; seize the sweetness with your tongue. Let the Soma, pressed and sweet, full of honey, be pleasant for your body and bring peace to your heart, Indra.
