Let us remember the mighty Indra, whose fierce friendship gives us courage and strength. May we never falter nor grow weary in his service, for his great deeds shine before us—deeds performed for Turvasha and Yadu, who found favor in his power. Indra, the bull who surges forward with swelling might, is never angered by generosity. Like cows laden with honey and richness, blessings flow abundantly wherever he comes. So we invite him: come, O Indra, and drink with us. A true friend of Indra is adorned with horses and chariots, possessing fine form and abundant cattle. Sharing in Indra’s strength, such a friend enters the assembly radiant and ever youthful. Indra, like a wild beast thirsting for fresh water, is drawn to the Soma. Day after day, he rejoices and seizes the greatest might, fulfilling his desires with the sacred draught. O Adhvaryu, let the Soma flow, for Indra thirsts. His two strong steeds are yoked, and the slayer of Vṛtra approaches. When Indra is satisfied with Soma, even the worshipper feels himself great. This well-mixed offering is his proper food; so let it flow forth, and let him drink. O Adhvaryus, press the Soma for Indra, who stands ready on his chariot. The stones ring out on the pressing ground, pouring forth the generous offering for the ritual. The two swift and powerful steeds, harnessed to the chariot, bring Indra quickly to the sacrifice. Let the seven ritual teams, adorned and ready, bear him to the pressing ground. For our companion, we choose Pūṣan, the generous and much-giving. And you, Shakra, much-invoked, teach us with wisdom, and grant us release for wealth. Sharpen us, Indra, as one sharpens a razor on a strop. Grant us riches, and may we, through your grace, know the shining wealth you bestow upon mortals. Pūṣan, I seek your favor and praise, O radiant one. I desire no enmity, but only your gifts, and so I sing hymns to you. The cows, O radiant Pūṣan, perhaps have gone to pasture, ever marked and immortal. Be our protector, gracious and mighty, and grant us strength. Bestow upon us abundant wealth—a hundred horses among the gifts of the swift and fortunate king. Among the Turvashas, may we find favor through his bounty. With the thoughts and praises of Kanva the prize-winner, with shining hymns, we have driven out sixty thousand herds of cattle—the seer has released the troops. Even the trees could not withstand our onrush; they break apart, and by our power, the cows and horses are divided and distributed. From afar, the red-hued one, shining with moisture, spreads his radiance, upholding all things. O wondrous Ashvins, with your minds yoked to your broad-powered chariot, you accompany Ushas, the dawn. To you, bestowers of wealth in horses, our hymns arise, like a messenger bringing speech. Beloved for your aid, gracious and possessing much wealth, the Kanvas praise you, O Ashvins. Mighty winners of riches, lords of beauty, come to the house of the worshipper. For those who worship well and are generous, bestow wisdom and guidance; pour forth streams of milk with ghee. Come swiftly to our hymn, O Ashvins, with your falcons and rapid steeds. Come with your horses, traversing the three distant shining realms of heaven, passing through all regions. Grant us abundant wealth with cattle and prosperity; open wide the path for our journey. Bring us wealth, O Ashvins—cattle, strong men, splendid chariots, and horses in abundance. Ever-growing lords of beauty, wondrous ones with golden wheels, drink the honeyed Soma. To those who praise and to the generous, bring wide protection, you who delight in our songs. Draw near to the prayers of the people; hasten here, do not turn aside to another. Of this sweet exhilaration, O Ashvins, drink—the honeyed gift set for you, lords of the chariot. Bring us wealth a hundredfold, a thousandfold, supporting all people. In many places, wise men call upon you; come, O Ashvins, to those who praise. The people, with sacred grass and offerings, adorned and prepared, call upon you. Today, O wondrous ones, may this most excellent praise reach you and remain with you. O Ashvins, drink from the vessel of honey that has been placed for you, charioteers among men. With that, O givers of horses, bring us abundant nourishment—cattle, offspring, and cows. Grant us blessings from heaven and from the flowing rivers, pouring them down as through open doors. When will the son of Tugra, having set out on the sea, be abandoned by you, O Ashvins, or when will your chariot break? Never, for you have always favored Kanva, the generous one, in his house, with your constant aids. Come now with newer, most auspicious aids, for I call upon you, mighty ones, seeking your favor. Just as you protected Kanva, the dear and praised, and Atri, and Shinjara as well, so may you continue to guard and bless us, O Ashvins, ever gracious and wondrous.
