In the ancient days, there were those who ventured forth uninjured, like mighty chariots rolling across the land. These men became leaders among their peers, shining by their own strength and dwelling in the favor of fortune. Then, from the heavens, Dawn arrived, born aloft and radiant, revealing her greatness through truth. With her coming, she drove away all that was harmful and hostile, clearing the most difficult obstacles and awakening the paths for all beings. On this day, she stirs us to well-being, granting us fortune and bestowing splendid, renowned wealth—gifts that bring fame among mortals. Her radiant beams fill the sky, generating divine order and spreading light throughout the spaces above. Swiftly she circles the five regions, yoked from afar, observing the ways of people. Dawn, the daughter of heaven and mistress of the world, surveys all from her vantage. Rich in horses, bride of the Sun, splendid and generous, she rules over treasures and is praised by sages. Rising with fires, invigorating and bountiful, Dawn is celebrated in song. Her bright, ruddy horses appear, drawing her forth as she advances, shining in her adorned chariot, bestowing riches upon those who worship her. True among the true, great among the great, the goddess revered by the gods breaks strongholds and brings light to the cows, for the cattle have longed for Dawn. She is asked to grant wealth with cattle and heroes, with horses and abundant gifts, and to ensure that the sacred grass is never neglected. May she always protect us with her blessings. The immortal light, creator of all, rises—the universal fire, Savitar, the god, shines forth. By his will, the gods' eye was born, and Dawn revealed the entire world. The paths of the gods become visible, unobstructed and adorned with riches. The sign of Dawn is seen ahead, coming from the west and entering homes. Days pass, rising in the east with the Sun. Like a lover, Dawn moves around—she is seen but does not return again. Ancient seers, truthful and wise, sat in the gods' assembly. The ancestors found the hidden light and, uttering true words, brought forth Dawn. United in one place, gathered together, they seek riches and do not strive against each other, nor violate the gods' laws. The Vasiṣṭhas praise Dawn with hymns, singing her glory. She is the leader of cows, wife of strength, noble-born, first to grow old. Dawn is the leader of wealth and good speech, granting enduring fame and riches, and always protecting with blessings. Dawn shines forth, youthful as a maiden, giving life to all that moves. Agni appears in the human assembly, kindling light and dispelling darkness. The radiant Dawn spreads everywhere, clad in shining garments and bearing bright light. Golden-hued and beautiful, she is the mother of cows and leader of days. Bearer of the gods' vision, fortunate and splendid, Dawn leads the white, beautiful horse, manifest in her rays and generous, spreading over all. She is called to come near, to drive away the enemy, make wide pastures safe, remove hatred, bring wealth, and inspire generosity. She is asked to shine upon us with her most splendid rays, prolonging life, and to bestow wealth abounding in cattle, horses, and chariots. The Vasiṣṭhas exalt her, seeking lofty and abundant riches, and her blessings. The first beams of Dawn appear, her shining rays spreading upward. She is called to come near with her radiant chariot, bringing favor and light. Agni is kindled in response, and inspired ones praise her with hymns. The goddess advances with her light, driving away darkness and misfortune. Dawns shining with light appear before us, dispelling gloom. They bring forth the Sun, the sacrifice, and Agni, sending away unwelcome darkness. The generous daughter of heaven awakens; all behold the shining Dawn. She mounts her self-yoked chariot, drawn by well-harnessed horses. Today, may we and the generous ones awaken with good thoughts for her. The Dawns scatter darkness and always protect with blessings. Dawn opens paths for people, awakening the five tribes of men. With well-seeing oxen, she brings forth the light, and the Sun, with his vision, fills heaven and earth. She reveals the seasons at the edges of the sky; like yoked women, the Dawns strive. Her cows turn back the darkness, bringing light as Savitar stretches out his arms. Dawn becomes most Indra-like and bountiful, bringing forth fame and good fortune. The divine daughter of heaven bestows riches upon the pious Angiras. She is called to grant as much wealth as she has given her praisers, breaking open the strong doors of the cloud with the roar of the bull. Urging the gods for gifts, she inspires truth and wisdom for prosperity, always protecting with blessings. With hymns, the Vasiṣṭhas, inspired ones, first awakened Dawn. She turns the two realms, revealing all the worlds. Bearing new life, she awakens from darkness to light; the youthful, unashamed maiden goes before, kindling the Sun, the sacrifice, and Agni. Dawns rich in horses, cattle, and heroes are asked to always rise, bringing blessings and pouring forth ghee from every side. Dawn appears, shining forth as the daughter of heaven, driving away great darkness for vision and making light. The Sun rises together with his rays, the star ascends shining. At her dawning and the Sun's, we go forth to claim our share. To the aged daughter of heaven, Dawn, we come, for she bears wondrous treasure for the worshipper. O goddess who shines forth, performing great and renowned deeds, visible to all, we seek you who bestows treasures, that we may be like sons to a mother. Bring to us that wondrous gift, O daughter of heaven, that most renowned and far-heard bounty. Grant us that which is fit for mortals, that we may enjoy it. Thus, the story of Dawn unfolds—her arrival brings light, fortune, and blessings to all. She is praised and sought after, the radiant goddess who awakens the world, dispels darkness, and bestows the treasures of heaven upon those who honor her.
