As dawn breaks, the fortunate and all-seeing Sun rises, its brilliance shared by all humanity. This radiant orb is the eye of Mitra and Varuna, the divine witnesses, who, like a skin, reveal the thoughts hidden within each being. The Sun ascends, creator of peoples and the great banner of the heavens, moving across the vast ocean of the sky. Its wheel, ever turning, is borne by spokes—its rays harnessed to the yoke, propelling the Sun’s journey. Emerging from the place of the dawns, the Sun is accompanied by the shining ones, praised by all. The god Savitar, steadfast in his appointed path, sets order for the world, never neglecting his duty, just as one never forsakes a shared dwelling. With golden brilliance and far-seeing gaze, the Sun traverses the sky, shining with purpose, reaching distant aims. As it rises, people, born with the Sun, stir to life, moving about, pursuing their daily tasks and works. The immortals have made a path for the Sun, swift as an eagle in flight, and it follows this course faithfully. At its rising, worship is offered to the Sun, and to Mitra and Varuna, with reverence and offerings. May Mitra, Varuna, and Aryaman grant wide space for ourselves and our children, making our paths easy and good, always protecting us with well-being. Dwelling in the sky, in the vast expanse of the atmosphere, streams of clarified butter are wished to flow forth for these gods. May Mitra, Aryaman—noble-born king—and Varuna of good rule accept our offering. O royal guardians of truth, lords of the rivers, rulers, come near; grant us nourishment and rain from the sky, you who bestow long life. May Mitra, Varuna, and Aryaman lead us on the most prosperous paths. Let them declare, “Let Sudas, protected by the gods, prosper with abundance.” He who fashioned the pit with his mind, who made and upheld lofty intentions—may Mitra and Varuna pour forth with ghee, satisfying those well-settled. This praise is for Varuna and Mitra; bright Soma is brought as to Vayu. Inspire our thoughts, accept our prayers, and always protect us with well-being. At the Sun’s rising, hymns call upon Mitra and Varuna, pure in skill, whose lordship is unshaken and supreme, moving in a path none can obstruct. They are the lords among the gods, the mighty ones; may they grant us thriving lands, and may we dwell where the heavens and days bring fullness. With many snares, they guard against falsehood, difficult to overcome for hostile mortals. By the path of truth, like a boat over waters, may we cross over all misfortune. Mitra and Varuna, accept our offerings; let streams of ghee and abundance of milk flow. Grant the best to your worshippers and fill us from the heavenly source. This praise is for you, Varuna and Mitra; bright Soma is brought as to Vayu. Inspire our thoughts, accept our prayers, and always protect us with well-being. Let this praise go forth to Mitra and Varuna, strong and worthy; let us bow to the two, born of the same origin. Those whom the gods, skilled in action, sustain—fathers of skill—are honored for their greatness of lordship. May the guardians of the body—Varuna, protector of singers, and Mitra—accomplish our thoughts. Today, at sunrise, Mitra, Aryaman, Savitar, and Bhaga, free from guilt, bring prosperity. May our dwelling be rich in noble sons, ever advancing, O generous ones, who have carried us beyond distress. Aditi, sovereign of truth, unbroken in her rule, along with those kings of great power, governs all. At sunrise, praise is offered to Mitra, Varuna, and Aryaman, destroyers of falsehood. This thought, seeking wisdom, is offered for strength to the mighty, the unassailable, for the gaining of golden wealth. May we, Varuna and Mitra, and the wise, possess prosperity and well-being. Many, with the vision of the Sun and tongues of fire, upholding truth, have traversed the three gatherings by their thoughts, surpassing all with their protections. They have set apart the year, the month, and the day for sacrifice, and Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, the kings, have taken up their undiminished power. This day, at sunrise, hymns honor Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, and the charioteers of truth, yoked together. Upholders of truth, born of truth, growing by truth, formidable and haters of falsehood—may we, and all the wise, be in your good favor, most well-defended. That wondrous form, shining, rises from the sky at dawn, when the swift, god-driven one carries it for all to see. The head of moving and unmoving things—the lord—traverses all realms, and seven sisters, for good fortune, carry the Sun in their chariot. That eye, set by the gods, rises bright; may we see for a hundred autumns, may we live for a hundred autumns. Come, Varuna, unassailable with the seers, and you, Mitra, to the Soma-drinking, shining with glory. By the abodes of heaven, Varuna and Mitra, come without deceit; drink the Soma, O mothers’ sons. Come, Mitra and Varuna, accepting our offering, O lords; drink the Soma, you who grow with truth. To you both, kings, the chariot is directed with worshipful mind and offering, as a messenger, like a son to his parents. Agni, kindled for us, is not to be mourned; even those at the edge of darkness have seen him. He, the herald, shines before the dawn, born for the glory of the daughter of heaven. Now the skilled priest praises the Ashvins, the Nāsatyas, with hymns, desiring to speak. Come by the ancient paths, by the wealth-bringing chariot, knowing the way, with many blessings. Ashvins, young and mighty, are called upon at the pressing of the soma; let your aged horses bring you here. Drink the well-prepared honeyed draughts for us. Ashvins, divine ones, direct unwavering thought toward attainment and the gaining of treasures. Enter all contests for prize and prosperity; grant us your power, O lords of strength, with your abilities. And so, as the Sun rises and the gods are praised, offerings and hymns flow forth—seeking their protection, blessings, and the fullness of well-being for all.
