I sing of the majestic realm of Mitra and Varuna, whose might upholds the greatness of both heaven and earth. Their power binds the two worlds together, and while the months slip by unnoticed for those who neither sacrifice nor bear offspring, our hymns and offerings find their way to these divine guardians. All their deeds are unwavering and true; in their actions, there is nothing hidden or mysterious, nothing to confound or amaze—for deceit attaches only to the unrighteous among men, and the secrets of Mitra and Varuna are never revealed to those who fail to honor them. With reverence, I magnify the sacrifice dedicated to Mitra and Varuna, calling upon them without obstacle. I compose and offer fresh hymns, confident that these prayers are joyfully received by the gods. The divine priest, appointed for their worship, stands ready in the rites, invoking their protection. We beseech Mitra and Varuna: shield us from all hardships, remove obstacles from our path, and ever guard us with your blessings. Behold, the Sun rises, spreading his radiant beams and surveying all the births of humankind. By day he appears, skilled and crafted by the hands of the beneficent, shining equally upon all. As the Sun ascends before us, we accompany his journey with our praises, hymns, and songs. Let us speak forth to Mitra, Varuna, Aryaman, and Agni, affirming our innocence and seeking their favor. May Varuna, Mitra, and Agni, righteous and shining, grant us a thousand gifts. May the luminous gods bestow upon us the highest praise and fulfill our desires with their hymns. O Heaven and Earth, O Aditi, mother of the gods of noble origin, protect us! May we not suffer the wrath of Varuna or the winds, nor lose the favor of Mitra, most beloved among men. Stretch forth your arms, O divine ones, for our well-being. Release for us the nourishing pastures dripping with ghee. Make us renowned among people, O youthful Mitra and Varuna, hear my call. May you, along with Aryaman, grant us generous space for ourselves and our children. May all our paths be easy and good, and may you always protect us with your blessings. Again, the fortunate, all-seeing Sun rises, common to all mankind—the very eye of Mitra and Varuna. Like a skin stretched taut, he reveals the thoughts within all beings. He ascends, creator of peoples, the great banner of the heavens, moving like an ocean. The same wheel of the Sun revolves, its spokes bearing it onward as its rays are harnessed to the yoke. Radiant, the Sun emerges from the place of the dawns, accompanied by the shining ones, praised by all. The god Savitar has set all things in order, fulfilling his appointed course, never neglecting his duty—just as one never abandons his shared dwelling. With golden brilliance and far-seeing gaze, he rises from the sky, traversing distant goals. At his appearance, people awaken, go about their tasks, and perform their daily works. Where the immortals have made a path for him, the Sun flies swift as an eagle, following the course laid out before him. At your rising, O Sun, we worship Mitra and Varuna with reverence and offerings. May Mitra, Varuna, and Aryaman grant us wide space for ourselves and our children; may all our paths be easy and good, and may you always protect us with well-being. Dwelling in the heavens and the wide expanse of the atmosphere, may streams of clarified butter flow for you. May Mitra, Aryaman—king of noble birth—and Varuna, ruler of just order, accept our offerings. O royal guardians of truth, lords of the rivers, come near. Grant us, Mitra and Varuna, nourishment and rain from the sky, you who bestow long life. May Mitra, Varuna, and the god Aryaman lead us on the most prosperous paths. May it be declared, “Let Sudas, protected by the gods, prosper with abundance.” He who fashioned the deep with his mind, who conceived and upheld the lofty intention—may you, Mitra and Varuna, pour forth with ghee and satisfy the well-settled ones. This praise, O Varuna and Mitra, is for you. I bring the bright Soma as I would to Vayu; inspire our thoughts, accept our prayers, and always protect us with well-being. At your rising, O Sun, with hymns I call upon Mitra and Varuna, pure in skill, unshaken and supreme in their lordship, moving along a path none can obstruct. Among the gods, they are the lords, the mighty ones. May they grant us thriving lands, that we may dwell where the heavens and the days bring fullness. With many snares, they guard against falsehood—difficult to overcome for any hostile mortal. O Mitra and Varuna, by the path of truth, may we, like a boat crossing waters, pass over all misfortune. Accept our offerings, O Mitra and Varuna; let streams of ghee and abundance of milk flow. Grant the best to your worshipper here, and fill us from the heavenly source. This praise, O Varuna and Mitra, is for you. I bring the bright Soma as I would to Vayu; inspire our thoughts, accept our prayers, and always protect us with well-being. Let this praise go forth to Mitra and Varuna, strong and worthy of devotion. Let us bow to the two, born of the same origin, whom the gods, skilled in action, uphold as fathers of skill for their greatness in lordship. May these guardians of the body—Varuna, protector of singers, and Mitra—accomplish our thoughts. As the Sun rises today, may Mitra, Aryaman, Savitar, and Bhaga, free from guilt, bring prosperity. May our dwelling be rich in noble sons, ever advancing, O generous ones, who have carried us beyond distress. And Aditi, sovereign of truth, unbroken in her rule, together with these mighty kings, governs all. At your sunrise, I praise Mitra, Varuna, and Aryaman, destroyers of falsehood. This thought, seeking wisdom, is offered for strength to the mighty, the unassailable, for the gaining of golden wealth. May we, O god Varuna, and you, O Mitra, together with the wise, possess prosperity and well-being. Many, with the vision of the Sun and tongues of fire, upholding truth, have crossed the three gatherings by their thoughts, surpassing all with their protections. They have set apart the year, the month, and the day for sacrifice, and Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman—the kings—have taken up their undiminished power. This day, at sunrise, we honor you with hymns, when Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, and you, charioteers of truth, are yoked. Upholders of truth, born of truth, growing by truth, formidable and haters of falsehood—may we, O people, and all the wise, be in your good favor and most well-defended. That wondrous, shining form rises from the sky at dawn, when the swift, god-driven one bears it for all to see. Thus, in reverence and hope, we celebrate the eternal guardians, Mitra and Varuna, with our prayers, offerings, and the light of the rising Sun.
