O Maruts, from your boundless power, sages are enriched a hundredfold, and the strong become mightier by a thousand. It is through your force that kings overcome their foes in battle; may your impulses always be the most potent for such deeds. I call upon you, compassionate sons of Rudra—may you, the Maruts, return to us again. Whether you have withheld your gifts or revealed them, we seek your favor, O mighty ones. May this hymn, so well-praised and earnestly sung, bring delight to you, generous Maruts. Drive hatred far from us, O powerful ones, and ever protect us with well-being. Whomever you gods shelter—Agni, Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman, Maruts—grant him your protection and guidance. With your help, O gods, the devotee overcomes his enemies and crosses over into prosperity and abundance, for he serves you in hope of your favor. Never, even for a moment, does Vasiṣṭha forget you. Today, O Maruts, come to us at the pressing of the Soma; all you who desire the offering, partake and drink. In battle, those who seek your favor never lack protection; your goodwill, ever renewed, turns towards you, O eager ones. Come, O givers of strength, dispel the darkness so that we may drink; accept these offerings, O Maruts, and do not go elsewhere. Come, sit upon our sacred grass, and as benefactors, grant us splendid wealth. Unwavering Maruts, rejoice here in the sweet Soma and in our sacrifice. Even those adorned, shining in their forms like blue-backed swans, have flown forth; let your entire host not sit apart from me, O Maruts, but delight in the pressing of the Soma. If any with hostile intent seeks to harm us, O Vasus, or strike us from the side, release us from the snares of deceit; with your most blazing weapon, strike down such foes. O Maruts, accept the offerings of those who are zealous; may your protection, O destroyers of foes, be with us. Come, O Maruts, to the householder’s rite—do not be absent; may your generous protection be with us. Here, O possessors of true strength, wise and radiant as the sun, I choose you, Maruts, for the sacrifice. We worship Tryambaka, the fragrant one, the increaser of prosperity; may I be released from death as a cucumber from its stem, but not from immortality. As the Sun rises today, O Mitra and Varuna, let all I speak be true in your sight. O Aditi, may we be beloved among the gods, singing your praise, O Aryaman. This Sun, O Mitra and Varuna, rises with the gaze of men, traversing the sky; he is the guardian of all that moves and stands, seeing both the righteous and the crooked among mortals. Seven bay steeds, yoked to the place of assembly, carry the Sun, shining with clarified butter. O Mitra and Varuna, you have established the abodes, and the Sun, like a leader, beholds the generations. Brilliant, honeyed rays rise as the Sun mounts the shining sky; for those whom the Adityas favor, the paths are cleared—Mitra, Aryaman, and Varuna together. These are the watchers against falsehood—Mitra, Aryaman, and Varuna—steadfast in truth, mighty and unfailing sons of Aditi, growing in their dwelling. With far-reaching vision, Mitra and Varuna make even the unwise attentive through their wisdom, and guide the wise with their counsel, leading us safely past all distress. Ever watchful from heaven and earth, these wise ones lead even the unmindful; even when the rivers are wide, there is a ford—may they carry us across this vast expanse. Whatever good protection Aditi grants as guardian, whatever Mitra and Varuna bestow upon Sudas, may our offspring and descendants be placed within that shelter. May we never commit any act offensive to the gods, O swift ones. Let him, supported by priests, offer the oblation, even if restrained by Varuna; let Aryaman ward off enmities, and may the mighty ones grant Sudas a wide domain. Even when memory falters, these mighty ones endure with sudden strength; out of awe of you, O powerful ones, all stir, and by your great skill, be merciful to us. He who brings forth noble thought for the priest and strives for the highest prize of wealth—the generous ones, the Maghavans—have restrained anger for the Arya and established broad dwellings with good foundation. This divine priest has been appointed for you, O Mitra and Varuna, in sacrifices; protect us from all hardships, remove them from us, and always guard us with blessings. The Sun rises, beautiful in form, as the eye of Varuna and the gods. He stretches out, observing all worlds, perceiving the intentions among mortals. To you, Mitra and Varuna, the inspired priest raises his ancient hymns; you support his prayers with wise action, filling his years with your deeds. From earth and from lofty heaven, O Mitra and Varuna, you have placed your spies among plants and peoples, ever vigilant, protecting without blinking. I praise the vast domain of Mitra and Varuna, whose might binds the two worlds in greatness. For those without sacrifice or offspring, the months pass by, but our hymn and offering reach you. All your mighty deeds are unfailing; in them there is nothing strange or hidden—deceit clings only to the unrighteous, and your mysteries are not found among the unhonored. With reverence I magnify your sacrifice, O Mitra and Varuna, and call upon you unhindered. I send forth new hymns to you, and these prayers are gladly received. Again, this divine priest is appointed for you, O Mitra and Varuna, in sacrifices; protect us from all hardships, remove them from us, and always guard us with blessings. The Sun rises, shining with great rays, surveying all the births of mankind; radiant by day, made by skill, created by the doers of good. That Sun rises before us, with our praises, hymns, and songs; let us speak forth to Mitra, Varuna, Aryaman, and Agni, for our innocence. May Varuna, Mitra, and Agni, the righteous ones, grant us a thousand gifts. May the shining ones bestow upon us the highest praise and fulfill our desires through their hymns. O Heaven and Earth, O Aditi, protect us, you who gave birth to you, of noble origin. Let us not incur the anger of Varuna or the wind, nor lose the favor of Mitra, most beloved among men. Stretch forth your arms for our life, release for us the pasture with ghee; make us renowned among people, O youthful ones. Hear me, Mitra and Varuna, as I call upon you. Now may Mitra, Varuna, and Aryaman grant us space for ourselves and our children; may all paths be easy and good for us, and may you always protect us with blessings.
