Among men, there are those who strive and contend with one another for gifts and blessings. To them, the generous givers of heaven and earth are invoked, that they may grant their favor. Let Ahirbudhnya hear these prayers, and may Varūtrī, with her single cow, shield us in her protection. As the lord of the household approaches, bearing the precious treasure bestowed by the divine Savitar, may he look kindly upon us. The mighty Bhaga is called for assistance, and graciously, Bhaga himself draws near, bringing treasure with him. Swift messengers, devoted to the gods, are summoned to bring wellbeing to our invocations. Radiant in their own light, may they drive far from us all serpents, wolves, and demons—banishing every misfortune that threatens. In every contest, may these swift ones stand as our guardians; in matters of wealth, may the immortal sages, knowers of truth, be our protectors. Let them drink the honeyed offering, rejoice, and, their hearts satisfied, continue along the path of the gods. Agni, upright and luminous, attains the goodwill of the wealthy. His flame, turned toward us, advances into the divine assembly. The stones split the path for the chariot, and the immortal Hotar, impelled by purpose, offers the sacred sacrifice. The well-yoked Agni proceeds to the sacred grass; like a true lord of the people, he moves among them. For the good of all, at the first call of dawn, Vāyu and Pūṣan arrive with their teams, bringing welfare. Here, the radiant gods, together with their offspring, rejoice in the wide midspace, purifying themselves. O you who dwell in vast abodes, make a broad path for us and hear the messenger who comes before you. In the sacrifices, these are the ones worthy of offering; all the gods are present at the sacred seat. To them, Agni, present the shining oblation at the ritual—Bhaga, the Aśvins, and the ever-bountiful one. Agni, carry our hymns from earth to heaven; bring Mitra, Varuṇa, Indra, and Agni himself; bring Aryaman, Aditi, Viṣṇu, Sarasvatī, and let the Maruts find joy in these offerings. The offering is brought with the thoughts of those worthy of sacrifice, fulfilling the desires of mortals. May the Giver grant us wealth that cannot be lost, and may we share such wealth with the gods who are to be yoked. Now, heaven and earth, praised by the Vasiṣṭhas, may Varuṇa, Mitra, and Agni—upholders of truth—bestow upon us a shining, supreme hymn. May you always shield us with wellbeing. In the sacred rite, may understanding and hearing come together; let us set forth the praise of the mighty ones. Whatever the god Savitar bestows today, may we share in his treasures. May Mitra, Varuṇa, and the two worlds grant us a share of heaven; may Indra and Aryaman give; may the goddess Aditi show us favor, and may Vāyu and Bhaga grant what they have prepared. Let the mighty Maruts be strong for us, helping the mortal whom you, swift ones, protect. Agni and Sarasvatī also aid him; none can surpass such a one in wealth. For this one is the leader, O Varuṇa, of truth itself—Mitra, Aryaman, and the great kings uphold it. The goddess Aditi, easy to invoke and unfailing, may she guide us safely past all distress. Of generous Viṣṇu, the mighty, may we partake with offerings at the distribution. May Rudra reveal his Rudra-like greatness, and may the two Aśvins guide us on a prosperous path. O Pūṣan, radiant one, may the mother, the protecting goddess, and the givers of gifts grant us their blessings; may the kindly horses guard us, and may the encircling wind bring us rain. Again, heaven and earth, praised by the Vasiṣṭhas, may Varuṇa, Mitra, and Agni, upholders of truth, grant us a shining, supreme hymn. May you always protect us with wellbeing. At dawn, we call upon Agni, at dawn we call upon Indra; at dawn, Mitra and Varuṇa, and at dawn, the Ashvins. At dawn we invoke Bhaga, Pūṣan, and Brahmanaspati; at dawn, we remember Soma and Rudra as well. At dawn, Bhaga, the mighty and victorious son of Aditi, is invoked, he who distributes blessings. Even those who feel deprived, the swift, and the king himself, all pray, “May Bhaga grant me a share.” O Bhaga, guide us; O true bestower, raise up our thoughts and grant us gifts. O Bhaga, generate for us cattle and horses; O Bhaga, may we be men among men. May we now be endowed with Bhaga, both at the beginning and in the midst of the days. When the sun rises, O generous one, may we be in the favor of the gods. May Bhaga alone be the bestower; may the gods make us endowed with Bhaga. To you, O Bhaga, all call; be our leader here, O Bhaga. The dawns, bearers of sacrifice, bow down, like Dadhikravan for his shining path. May they bring Bhaga, the giver of wealth, near, as swift horses draw a chariot. May the dawns, rich in horses, cattle, and heroes, always rise auspicious for us. Milking ghee from every side, may you always protect us with wellbeing. Let the Angirases, the singers, set forth their chants; let the resounding hymn reach the sky. Let the cows, with full udders, stream forth; let the pressing stones be yoked for the beauty of the sacrifice. O Agni, of good guidance, be our leader on the path; yoke the tawny and the red steeds at the pressing. Those who are in the seat, the ruddy ones, the bearers of heroes, are called—the births of the gods, seated. Together, with praises, we magnify the sacrifice for you; let the gracious Hotar shine forth as he approaches. Worship, O you of many forms, the worthy gods; gain the favor of the immortal mind. When the wealthy hero, the guest, is welcomed in the house with kindness, Agni, well-pleased and well-kindled, bestows desirable wealth upon the family. Accept this sacrifice of ours, O Agni; with the Maruts and Indra, make us renowned. May Night and Dawn sit on the sacred grass; may Mitra and Varuṇa, invited, come here. Thus Vasiṣṭha, desiring wealth, praises Agni the mighty, the all-encompassing. He has spread forth food, wealth, and strength for us; may you always protect us with wellbeing. Let those devoted to the gods sing to you at the sacrifices, Heaven and Earth, with reverence, for sustenance. Your prayers, O wise ones, are unmatched, spreading everywhere like the branches of trees. Let the sacrifice proceed, like a chariot with a yoke; rise up, united in mind, with clarified butter. Spread the sacred grass for the proper rite; let the divine flames stand upright. As sons bearing gifts approach their mother, so let the gods sit on the sacred grass. Let all-knowing Agni guide our rites; O gods, do not let enmity come near us. May those streams of truth, ever-yielding, flow willingly for you, O worshipful ones. Today, come to the greatest of treasures; come together, united in mind, and strive. So, O Agni, be gracious to our people; with you, O mighty one, may we never be defeated. With wealth as our companion, in harmonious assembly, unharmed—may you always protect us with wellbeing. I call upon Dadhikrā, upon the Ashvins, upon Ushas, upon Agni kindled, upon Bhaga for favor; upon Indra, Viṣṇu, Pūṣan, Brahmanaspati, the Ādityas, Heaven and Earth, the Waters, and the realm of light. Awakening Dadhikrā with reverence, advancing toward the sacrifice, seating the goddess Ilā upon the sacred grass, we invoke the Ashvins, wise and readily called. Recognizing Dadhikrā, I address Agni, Ushas, Sūrya, and the cow; the white one, the brown one, the four of Varuṇa—may they drive away all misfortunes from us. Dadhikrā, the foremost, the prize-winning steed, is first among chariots, knowing; united with Ushas, Sūrya, the Ādityas, the Vasus, and the Angiras. Thus, through these invocations and offerings, the worshippers seek the favor and protection of the gods, the bestowal of wealth and wellbeing, and the removal of all misfortune, journeying together on the path of truth and prosperity.
