There are those who try to define Pūṣan by calling him “karambha,” but I do not accept such a narrow designation for the god. For Pūṣan is far more than any single name or offering can capture: he is the most skillful of charioteers, a steadfast companion, a generous lord. When Indra rides with Pūṣan, together they overcome all enemies. Once, the radiant sun placed a golden wheel upon the dappled cow, and it was Pūṣan—the master charioteer—who set it in motion. To Pūṣan, the much-praised and wondrous one, wise among gods, we offer our words today: whatever we speak, may you fulfill these thoughts for us. Grant us success in our search for the lost cow, grant us the company that aids our pursuit. Pūṣan, your fame spreads far and wide, and so we seek your blessing. From distant places we approach you, seeking wealth and prosperity for today, for every tomorrow, and for all days to come. We call upon Indra and Pūṣan together, desiring their friendship and well-being, that they may grant us strength. Among mortals, one may long for the pressed Soma, another for karambha; each has his own desire. Goats are the fires for one, horses are assembled for another, yet with both Indra and Pūṣan, foes are vanquished. When Indra brought forth the mighty, rushing waters, it was Pūṣan who stood at his side, his faithful companion. We seek Pūṣan’s favor, swift and eager as birds flying from their tree, and we reach for Indra’s grace as well. We call on Pūṣan, the charioteer who holds the reins, and on mighty Indra for our well-being. O Pūṣan, your brightness and your sacredness are distinct—like day and night, you are of two forms, spanning the sky. You possess wondrous powers, self-sustaining and complete; may your gracious favor be with us always. Born not of mares, guardian of cattle, giver of strength, inspirer of thought, you are established in all worlds. With loosened reins, Pūṣan surveys the vast expanses, beholding all beings as he moves. Your golden ships, O Pūṣan, sail the ocean and traverse the midspace; with them, you journey on the mission of the Sun, driven by desire and seeking renown. Good companion, lord of plenty, mighty and radiant, you are the gift of the gods to Sūryā—powerful and beautiful, made by longing. Let me now proclaim the heroic deeds you have accomplished among the offerings, O Indra and Agni. Though your fathers, destroyers of the gods’ foes, have perished, you two live on. Your greatness, Indra and Agni, is supreme; you are of the same origin, brothers and twins, sharing one mother. Dwelling together at the pressed offering, like two horses yoked to a single chariot, Indra and Agni, we call upon you for aid, O wielders of the thunderbolt. He who praises you at the offerings, you who grow by the power of truth, may he speak words that please us; like two mighty ones, you neither harm the gods nor any being. Who among mortals truly knows your nature, Indra and Agni? Harnessing swift horses, one of you rides, but together you share a single chariot. There was a being, born before all footed creatures; after casting off its head, it spoke with its tongue and moved down with thirty feet. Men stretch their bows in your honor, Indra and Agni, striving for cattle and wealth. Turn not your favor from us in our struggles. The noble Māghas burn bright for you, and the hostile ones are kept far away. Remove our hatreds and grant us victory, even over the Sun. Yours are the treasures both divine and earthly, Indra and Agni; grant us all wealth here, the nourishment that sustains all. Renowned through hymns and called by our invocations, come with all songs to drink the Soma we offer. He who worships mighty Indra and Agni together—slayers of Vṛtra, givers of strength, worthy of united service—attains the abundance of the generous, the most powerful, victorious by force. These two are to be invoked now, O Indra, O Agni, who have brought the cows from the shining waters. O Indra, send forth the brilliant waters from the radiant quarters; O Agni, bring the cows, accompanied by your hosts. Come, O slayers of Vṛtra, with your powers, Indra and Agni, come near with reverence. With your gifts and protection, grant us your highest favors. We call upon you, Indra and Agni, who accomplished all this in ages past—you are never to be overcome. O mighty Indra and Agni, breakers of obstacles in battle, we call upon you for favor in times of strife. You have slain the hostile ones, lords of truth; you have destroyed our enemies and removed all adversaries. These praises are offered to you, Indra and Agni; come, drink the pressed Soma, bringers of happiness. Whatever aids you possess, many and varied, O heroic ones, bring them to your worshippers. With those aids, come to this Soma offering, Indra and Agni, for the drinking of Soma. Invoke the one whose flame embraces all forests, who blackens them with his tongue. Whoever, O mortal, invokes Indra’s favor with kindled fire, for glory, gains abundant waters. May those swift, prize-bearing gifts nourish our horses; for you, I invoke Indra and Agni. Both of you are to be called together; both bring joy with wealth, both are givers of visible riches, both I invoke for the attainment of strength. Come to us with cows, horses, and treasures; as friends, O divine companions, for friendship and happiness, Indra and Agni, we call upon you.
