In the beginning, Heaven and Earth were born together, springing forth in a single moment. The nourishing milk that Pṛśni gave was yielded at once, and nothing else came after that primordial birth. In reverence, the noble Mitra and Varuṇa, steadfast in their vows and bringers of favor, are praised with fresh hymns. May Mitra, Varuṇa, and Agni, rulers of excellent order, come near and listen to these offerings. Agni, ever youthful and tireless, child of Heaven and son of strength, shines brightly as the sacred sign of sacrifice. He is worthy of praise at every ritual, and let us worship him, the radiant one. Two daughters of the ruddy one, each with her own form, move together in brilliance. One adorns herself among women, while the other, the Sun, wanders apart. May the hymn, recited in their honor, reach these shining sisters. A lofty thought is directed to Vāyu, the wise, chariot-bearing deity, for abundant and desirable wealth. With shining steeds and leading hosts, Vāyu approaches the wise, worthy of worship. The wondrous chariot of the Aśvins, adorned with gold and yoked by their minds, travels the path for offspring and self. May this chariot, O Nāsatyas, shelter the devotee. Parjanya and Vāta, the mighty bulls of the earth, fill the waters and nourish all. Truth-hearing sages, through their hymns, make both the moving and fixed firm, stabilizing the world. Pāvīravī, maiden of shining life, and Sarasvatī, wife of heroes, are invoked to bestow intelligence. With the goddesses, may they grant unbroken shelter and invincible protection to the singer. Pūṣan, the radiant guardian, approaches on every path with speech, fulfilling desires. May he grant abundant, shining gifts with full hands and fulfill our thoughts. Agni, first to receive honor, possessor of glory and strength, with beautiful rays and fair hands, is the priest of the dwellings. Let him worship, radiant and well-invoked. Rudra, father of the world, is magnified with hymns in the sky and in sacrifice. The great, lofty, ageless, gracious one is called upon, inspired by the sage. The youthful, worshipful Maruts are invited to the singer’s praise, to the desired place. They increase even the unremarkable and, observing, follow the path of the Angirases. Like a herdsman guarding cattle, may he come forth for the hero, the mighty, the swift. He touches the summit of praise with his form, like rivers reaching the height of speech. Viṣṇu, who measured the earthly realms thrice for Manu in distress, brings shelter. May we rejoice in his protection, with body and offspring, when wealth is bestowed. Ahibudhnya, the serpent of the deep, may grant us blessings with the waters. The Sun, the Mountain, Savitṛ, the givers of riches, the plants, Bhaga, and Puraṃdhi are invoked to incite us to wealth. May he bestow wealth with chariots, renowned among men, rich in heroes, great, and guardian of truth. Through him, may we obtain undying dwelling among people, overcome the godless, enter the divine hosts, and partake of the divine. With reverence, Aditi is invoked for mercy, along with Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni, Aryaman, Savitṛ, and Bhaga—protecting gods all. O Sun, with bright light, lead our forefathers here, bring the great gods. Those twice-born, upholders of truth, possess heaven and are worshipful, with tongues of fire. Heaven and Earth, wide and great, sheltering pair, are asked for protection and kindness. With their mighty chariot, may they grant a secure, harm-free home. The sons of Rudra, the Vasus, invincible ones, are invoked today. Whether among the young or the great, in distress, the Maruts are called upon. On whom the two worlds depend, Pūṣan, the eager sacrificer, exerts himself. When the Maruts hear the call and come, the vast spaces tremble on the opened path. To Indra, beloved of song and hero, the singer offers new praise. May Indra hear the invocation and, being praised, grant riches to the magnifier. The Waters, mothers of men, pure and nurturing, are invoked for well-being of offspring and children. As the best physicians, mothers, creators of all that stands and moves, they are the origin of the world. May Savitṛ, the golden-handed protector, come to the worshipper, generous and revealing the dawn, bestowing treasures. O son of strength, Agni, may you be favorable in this sacrifice; may I always be your companion in battle and be strong with your help. The Nāsatyas, wise ones, are called to rescue the devotee from distress, as they once released Atri from great darkness. May the givers of wealth, shining and full of vigor, bestow riches renowned among men. The divine and earthly, born of the cow, are invoked for favor and grace. May Rudra and Sarasvatī, united, be gracious; may Viṣṇu, Vāyu, and the bountiful ones show mercy; may Ṛbhukṣa, divine strength, Parjanya, and Vāta fill us with nourishment. May Savitṛ, Bhaga, and the son of the waters, Dānu, protect; may Tvaṣṭṛ, with divine generations, united with the gods, and Heaven with the gods, Earth with the oceans, preserve us. Ahibudhnya, serpent of the deep, the one-footed, Earth, and Ocean are invoked to hear. May all the gods, upholders of truth, whom we call with hymns, protect us. Thus, the descendants of Bharadvāja honor the divine Hotars, the Vasus, the invincible ones, with thoughts and hymns, making them worthy of worship. That great, unfailing eye of Mitra and Varuṇa rises, beloved of Varuṇa, pure, shining, most beautiful, like a golden ornament, blazing from the sky. He who knows the three assemblies of these gods, the wise one born again and again, sees straight and crooked among mortals; the Sun, like Aryaman, surveys all. Great guardians of truth—Aditi, Mitra, Varuṇa, Aryaman, Bhaga—whose thoughts are unwavering, are praised for bringing prosperity. Destroyers of falsehood, true lords, unwavering, generous donors, youthful and strong rulers of the sky, O Ādityas, the devotee approaches Aditi with reverence. Heaven, our father; Earth, our steadfast mother; Agni, our brother; O Vasus, be gracious. All Ādityas, together with Aditi, grant wide protection. Let no wolf or she-wolf harm us, nor let the worshipful ones bring misfortune. As charioteers and guardians of our bodies, they uphold wise speech. Let us not suffer for another’s offense, nor for any deed the Vasus may have done. All gods rule over all; let the enemy not harm our own person. Homage is proclaimed to the mighty, to him who upholds earth and sky, to the gods and their lord. Even for a committed offense, forgiveness is sought with homage. To the charioteers of truth, pure in wisdom, unwavering, dwelling in the home of truth, the devotee bows with reverence. To all the far-seeing, great, worshipful ones, homage is offered. Thus, the story unfolds—a tapestry of praise, invocation, and reverence for the divine powers who sustain, protect, and guide the world and its people.
