Let us gather in devotion and reverence, seeking the blessings of the divine powers. We turn first to the Son of Strength, the one who is invoked at our offerings. May he accept our service, stand as our protector in battles, increase our well-being, and guard the health of our bodies. O Agni, mighty and unfading, you are great among the gods. Your flame shines forth, pure and ceaseless, radiating with unending brilliance. Shine upon us with your good gifts, O radiant one. You, Agni, are the wise priest who worships the great gods and performs the sacred rites with power and understanding. Draw the deities near for our aid—grant us strength and bring us wealth. The waters, the stones, and the forests all nourish you, O Agni, the embryo of immortality. Kindled with force, you are born among men, shining upon the surface of the earth. You fill both heaven and earth with your light, and your smoke moves through the sky. With your waves, you pierce the darkness, tawny bull among the dark ones. With your great flames and radiant light, O Agni, shine upon us. Kindled by Bharadvāja, youngest among the gods, shine for us with brightness and splendor. You are the lord of all households, honored among all people. Guard us, youngest one, from a hundred evils with your protection, and grant a hundred winters to those who praise and give. O treasure-giver, with wondrous aid, inspire us with gifts. Guide us like a charioteer, O Agni, leading us to abundance and a secure place. Carry our children and descendants safely, with your faultless and unfailing guidance. Keep far from us the anger of the gods and the offenses of the ungodly. Come, friends, and approach the cow of abundant milk with a new song. Set her free—let her not be restrained. That undying fame and glory which the ever-glorious Maruts bestow upon their troop, the glory won by noble deeds, may that be granted to Bharadvāja, twice over—the cow that yields to all, and the food that nourishes all. I praise Indra, wise in counsel, like Varuṇa in skill, like Aryaman in graciousness, a generous giver, and like Viṣṇu, the leader. May the mighty Maruts, fierce and roaring, and Pūṣan the unconquered, come together in their hundreds and thousands for the people. May hidden treasures appear among those who do good, and may wealth be granted. Pūṣan, come to us swiftly. Listen to our praise, O radiant one, and may no hostile person harm us. Do not, like a crow, tear up the tree or bring misfortune, for you are not a destroyer. The sun and even the necks of birds do not bear such burdens. Let your friendship be unwavering, like sight that never fails, like a vessel that is full and unbroken. You are beyond mortals, Pūṣan, equal to the gods in splendor. Shine forth in our battles and protect us now as you have before. May your gracious, gentle impulses lead us on the right path. May the blessings of the god, of the Maruts, and of the striving mortal be with us. Even in a single moment, the praise of the god reaches the sky, as the sun ascends. The Maruts have taken on fierce strength, a name worthy of worship, the greatest power for slaying Vṛtra. Heaven and earth were born at once, and at once did Pṛśni yield her milk; no other is born after that. Now I praise the noble Mitra and Varuṇa, of good vows, with fresh hymns—bringers of favor. May they come here and listen—Varuṇa, Mitra, and Agni, of excellent rule. Worthy of praise at every sacrifice, Agni, the youthful, unwearied child of heaven, the son of strength, the shining sign of sacrifice—let us worship him. The two daughters of the ruddy one, of different forms—one adorned herself among women, the other, the sun, wandered apart. Together they move, shining. May my hymn, as it is recited, reach them. To Vāyu I direct my lofty thought, seeking abundant wealth. O wise one, with shining steeds and leading hosts, you approach the wise, worthy of worship. May the wondrous chariot of the Aśvins, adorned with gold and yoked by your minds, shelter me. With it, O Nāsatyas, you travel the path for offspring and for self. Parjanya and Vāta, mighty bulls of the earth, fill the nourishing waters. Truth-hearing sages, your hymns make the moving and the fixed, and make the world firm. Pāvīravī, the maiden of shining life, Sarasvatī, wife of heroes, bestow intelligence. With the goddesses, grant unbroken shelter and invincible protection to the singer. On every path, Pūṣan, guardian with radiant speech, approaches with desire. May he grant us abundant, shining gifts, and fulfill our thoughts. Agni, first to receive honor, possessor of glory, giver of strength, god with fair hands and beautiful rays, the priest of the dwellings, the radiant, the well-invoked—let him worship. With hymns we magnify Rudra, father of the world, great, lofty, ageless, and gracious, in the sky and in sacrifice. May we call upon him, inspired by the sage. Come, O youthful, worshipful Maruts, to the singer’s praise, to the desired place. You increase even the unremarkable, following the path of the Angirases. Like a herdsman guarding cattle, let him come forth for the hero, for the mighty, for the swift. He touches the summit of praise with his form, like rivers reaching the height of speech. Viṣṇu, who thrice measured the earthly realms for Manu when he was hard-pressed—may we rejoice in his shelter, with body and offspring, when wealth is bestowed. May Ahibudhnya grant us with the waters, may the Sun, the Mountain, and Savitṛ bestow it upon us. May the givers of riches, the plants, Bhaga, and Puraṃdhi incite us to wealth. Now may he give us wealth with chariots, renowned among men, rich in heroes, great, the guardian of truth—by whom we may obtain undying dwelling among people, overcome the godless, enter into the divine hosts, and partake of the divine. With reverence, I invoke you, O divine Aditi, for mercy—Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni; I call Aryaman, most gracious, the protecting gods, Savitṛ, and Bhaga. With bright light, O Sun, lead our forefathers here and bring the great gods—those twice-born, upholders of truth, real, possessing heaven, worshipful, with tongues of fire. May Heaven and Earth, wide and great, grant us protection in their kindness. With their mighty chariot, as if making a path for us, may they grant us a secure home, free from harm. May the sons of Rudra, the Vasus, invincible, whom we have invoked today, bow to us. Whether among the young or the great, in times of distress, we call the Maruts, the gods, for their aid.
