For the sake of your aid, O Agni, noble riches gather and vie with one another; those who uphold their vows and strive faithfully overcome the lawless foe by your grace. You, Agni, conqueror of the waters and of death itself, bestow upon us a heroic and true lord, before whose might all enemies tremble in fear. Through your wisdom, Agni, you repel the hostile god away from mortals, and the wealth you guard stands victorious in every contest. O god Agni, friend of Mitra, speak on our behalf to the gods. Win for us their favor from heaven and earth, and grant us safety and a prosperous dwelling. May you help us cross beyond hatred, distress, and misfortune. Now, I lift my voice in praise of this ever-wakeful guest, the lord of all peoples, who knows the birth of heaven itself. He is pure and receives the offering when the altar is firm. The Bhṛgus established him, well-kindled and friendly, to be honored among the trees with his upright flame. So, wondrous Agni, bringer of the offering, you are magnified with praises, day by day, when you are well-pleased. You stand unopposed, strong and noble, surpassing the strength of others. O son of strength, grant protection and wide renown to the one who brings offerings, to Bharadvāja among mortals. I praise you, Agni, the shining guest, lord of light, Hotar of men, skilled in sacrifice. Like a wise priest, eloquent and generous, you bring the offerings with beautiful hymns. With your radiant glow, you spread over the earth like the dawn, never wearying in your advance, ever youthful like the sun, never failing in your brilliance. With kindling and worship, we honor you, Agni, beloved guest, and praise you with song. With our hymns, we summon the immortal, for among the gods, you, the god, win the prize and our favor. With kindling and song, I praise you, Agni, pure and shining, steadfast before the sacrifice. You are the wise priest, the seer of many gifts, without deceit, the one we seek with blessings, knower of all births. As the immortal messenger, you have been established age after age as the bearer of offerings and praiseworthy guardian. Gods and mortals, ever watchful, have seated you with reverence as the all-pervading lord of peoples. Adorned, you follow both laws, O Agni, as the messenger of the gods, traversing all realms. We choose your wisdom and goodwill; may you be our threefold protection and show us your grace. Beautiful and radiant, wise and lovely to behold, may we, the knowing, seek you as a friend. Let him who knows all works declare the offering to the immortals. O Agni, you protect and cherish the one who brings you wisdom, O hero, to the sage. Whether it is the portion or the illumination of the sacrifice, you fill the devotee with strength and wealth. Guard us, Agni, from the hostile one; mighty one, shield us from reproach. May your stream flow with us, and may abundant, desirable wealth come together with us. You are the Hotar, lord of the house, king who knows all births, Jātavedas. Among gods and mortals, you are most fit for sacrifice; may you, rich in offerings, lead the worshippers. Today, as you preside over the people’s rite with shining flame, you, Agni, are the sacrificer. You worship with truth and greatness; bring the offerings, youngest one, that are yours today. For your worship, let the well-prepared paths be laid out. May earth and heaven seat you for the sacrifice. O bountiful one, winner of strength, help us cross all troubles—may we cross them by your help. With all the gods of your own kind, Agni, sit first in the wool-lined womb; lead the sacrifice, rich with ghee, as a nest for Savitar, rightly for the sacrificer. This very Agni, like Atharvan, the wise ones kindle; they bring him forth from the black wood with the fire-stick. Be born for the favor of the gods, for complete well-being. Approach the immortal gods, upholders of truth, and touch the sacrifice among the gods. O lord of the house, we have made you, Agni, the great one among men, with our kindling. May our household fires be firm; by your sharp energy, guard us completely. You, Agni, are the Hotar of all sacrifices, appointed among all, with the gods and among the human race. With your delightful tongues at the rite, worship with greatness; bring the gods here and honor them. For you, O wise one, know the paths of the rite and the ways to the gods directly, Agni, in the sacrifices, O thoughtful one. To you I pray, as Bharata did with his steeds, seeking success; he worshipped you, worthy of sacrifice, in the rites. You grant many precious things to Divodāsa, who pours the Soma, and to Bharadvāja, who serves. As the immortal messenger, you bring the divine folk, listening to the singer’s good praise. You, Agni, are invoked by mortals, self-ruling, for the favor of the gods; in the sacrifices, they worship you as a god. Your visible form and your will, O generous one, all the desiring gods accept with joy. You are the Hotar, appointed by Manu, the fire most skilled in knowledge; Agni, worship the clans of heaven. Agni, come here for favor, praised, to receive the offering; sit down as Hotar on the sacred grass. You, whom we nourish with kindlings and ghee, O Angiras, shine forth greatly, youngest one. O god, you bring us wide renown and great strength, O Agni. You, Agni, Atharvan churned forth from the lotus, from the head of all creation. That very you, the sage Dadhyanc, son of Atharvan, kindled—slayer of Vritra, breaker of fortresses. That very you, O strong one, Pathya kindled—most mighty in slaying foes, winner of wealth in battle. Come here, Agni, I will speak these varied words to you; may we strengthen you with these offerings. Wherever your mind and highest skill are set, there you establish your dwelling. Thus, O Agni, radiant and wise, friend and guardian, you are honored by gods and mortals alike. Through your presence, we seek prosperity, protection, and the fulfillment of every sacred rite.
