O Agni, resplendent king and giver of treasures, your riches are manifold and wondrous, and we, your humble seekers, yearn for your wealth. In you, the bestower, lie countless gifts; you are the sovereign who grants prosperity to those who call upon you. Your fame, Agni, is lordly and renowned, akin to Mitra’s mastery; wise and generous, you foster abundance and nourish strength among mortals. All peoples seek you with their sacrifices and hymns, for you are the steadfast one, the unerring guide who traverses all realms as the universal leader. With one intent, humankind kindles you, Agni, the heavenly sign of sacrifice, when, full of devotion, they offer their rituals, seeking your favor. The mortal who, with careful thought, seeks your grace, O generous one, finds prosperity; aided by the vastness of heaven, he crosses beyond hatred and distress. He who kindles you and offers the sharp oblation does not perish; instead, he flourishes in a home full of vitality and long life. Your smoke rises forcefully to the sky, O Agni, bright and unfurled, shining like the sun with its radiant light; you are the purifier, gleaming with your flame. Thus, among all clans, you are praised and cherished as a guest, delightful as a householder, and treasured like a son who protects. By your will, you are born anew in the vessel, Agni—like a champion to be shaped, a calf in the lap, a horse to be harnessed, a child to be summoned. Even the immovable, O youthful Agni, your ageless flames consume, as cattle are led to pasture, cutting through and devouring all. You are ever fit for the sacrificial act, the Hotar in the house of the people; make us prosperous, lord of all, and accept our offering, O Angiras. Come to us, friend of Mitra, and speak to the gods, Agni, for the favor of heaven and earth. Bring us well-being and a good home; help us cross over hatreds, distress, and misfortune—may your guidance lead us beyond all adversity. O Agni, may the devotee who seeks wide illumination be protected by you, righteous and radiant; you, with Mitra and Varuna, guard him from harm and mortal distress. The one who honors you with sacrifices and offerings, opening the way for Agni, rejoices in fame, untouched by harm or sorrow. Like the unblemished sun, your fierce flames advance with formidable intent; you roar and lead swiftly, stirring all wherever you go, creating a home for the eager. Even your sharp form here is great: you blaze like a harnessed horse in the race, lick like the tongue of an axe, and, like molten metal, melt and burn the wood. You alone have inspired this praise, sharpening your brilliance like a stream of molten gold; your wondrous course is tireless, like a master craftsman you overcome the hostile with swift steps. Like a bellowing bull, you cannot be restrained; mighty and radiant, you bring forth the dawns as a friend, appearing red among men by day and by night, immortal in your splendor. Your fresh radiance, new and vigorous, shines among the plants, filling both worlds with prosperity, as the sun fills the sky with his steady path. Whether yoked with swift horses or with hymns, flashing like lightning with showers, or when you gather the Maruts like an artisan, you, the mighty and impetuous, shine forth. As priest for men, O son of strength, you offer sacrifices to the gods; so now, Agni, united and harmonious, attend us and, shining, worship the gods. May you, all-seeing guest of our dwelling, worthy of praise and knowledge, establish us firmly; you, immortal among mortals, Jātavedas, rich in gifts, become our guest at each dawn. Like the heavens dispelling darkness, you clothe yourself in light, shining like the sun; unfailing and pure, you pervade all, consuming even ancient things. We recount your deeds, O son of strength, both new and old, for by your birth, Agni, you have made food; so bestow strength upon us, like a king who protects his people with might. He who partakes of the food you set, like the wind, does not overstep the law nor neglect the offerings; may we, too, overcome adversaries, as one seizes and surrounds a thief. Like the sun with radiant beams, you stretch out the two worlds with your light, brilliantly driving away darkness, shining as a messenger who brings gifts. With your most delightful flames, we have chosen you, Agni, to hear us; like Indra or Vāyu, the most heroic fill you with their bounty. Now, Agni, bring us welfare along unhostile paths, grant us wealth, and carry us beyond harm; bestow good fortune on those who praise you, that we may rejoice, a hundred strong, with heroic sons. I call upon you, O youthful son of strength, most powerful, whose words are true and whose thoughts are mighty; bestower of riches, wise and generous, you never fail those who seek you. In you, O priest, ancient treasures are placed, both at dawn and in the dwelling; in you, pure one, all beings rest, and all good fortunes are gathered. In assemblies, you sit as charioteer of the gifts; by your will, you have become lord of boons, distributing riches, O wise Jātavedas, openly and in secret to your worshippers. Whoever seeks to harm us, Agni—whether openly or as a false friend—let him be scorched by your unfailing and strong flames; burn him, O fierce one, with your blazing power. He who pleases you with sacrifice, kindling, and hymns, O son of strength, shines forth among mortals as immortal, wise, wealthy, and renowned. When invoked, O Agni, repel our foes with your might; whatever you desire with your heavenly flames and words, accept it, O singer, and delight in our hymn. May we, by your help, attain our desires, O Agni—wealth, abundant riches, strong offspring, and ever-growing strength. May we attain your undiminishing and undecaying glory. With fresh praise, seeking your favor, I approach you, son of strength, with sacrifice, desiring protection. The shining, black-backed, white one—the divine Hotar—comes, splitting the wood. Bright and thundering, you stand in the shining realm, youngest among the ageless, resounding ones; purest and most excellent, you bear many vast things. Your flames, O Agni, driven everywhere by the wind, move brightly, pure in the pure; fiercely shining, divine, and newly born, they conquer the woods with force. Your bright, pure, radiant horses, swift as the wind, spread across the earth, and your wheel shines widely as it moves along the cloud’s ridge. Then your tongue, mighty one, darts forth, destroying and releasing the consuming flame among the cattle. Like a hero’s advance, Agni’s power, hard to restrain, fiercely devours the forests, revealing your unstoppable might.
