Shine forth, O Daughter of the Sky! Do not linger in concealment, but reveal your radiant form. As the sun scorches away the shadows with its rays, so too, O noble Dawn, drive away the thieves of darkness and all that is hostile. You, who are well-born and generous, bestower of swift horses and eloquent speech, let your light not be withheld. To those who understand your gifts, you have already given much, yet you are worthy to give even more. You, the Dawn, never diminish for those who praise you; your brightness is inexhaustible, your generosity unending. Behold the great and shining one, upholding truth with truth, her reddish glow emerging from the waters. She is the goddess Dawn, bringer of light, and the inspired ones greet her with their thoughts and hymns. Manifest, she awakens all people, making their paths easy, going before them in her great chariot. She bestows all strength and sends forth the light at the very beginning of days. Yoking her red cattle, she increases wealth and carves out a path for prosperity. Praised by many, she is all-giving, and her brilliance spreads everywhere. With two plaits, she reveals her form before all; she follows the path of truth with sure knowledge, never losing her way. Bright and upright, as if displaying her body for our sight and bathed in radiance, she repels hatred and darkness. Dawn, daughter of the sky, arrives with light. Facing us, she is like a beneficent woman, drawing forth the waters and uncovering treasures for the worshipper. This ever-young goddess brings back the light as she has always done. Meanwhile, the inspired ones harness their minds and thoughts in praise of Savitar, the wise and great god. He alone, the knower of rites, has established the offerings; this is the great praise of Savitar. The sage, Savitar, releases all forms and sends forth good fortune to beings both two-footed and four-footed. He, the choicest, has revealed the sky and shines forth at the setting out of the Dawns. Other gods, desiring his path, have followed his course, for by the greatness of Savitar, the spaces and earthly regions are measured. Savitar travels through the three luminous realms, uniting with the rays of the sun, encompassing night on both sides, and by his laws becomes Mitra. He alone is the lord of impulse, becoming Pūṣan by his courses, and he shines over the entire world—Savitar of the dark horse, for whom hymns are chanted. We choose the nourishment of Savitar the god, seeking the best, all-sustaining, swift portion of Bhaga. None diminish the self-earned glory of Savitar, nor his beloved sovereignty of the heavens. Savitar, the divine distributor, bestows treasures upon the worshipper; we seek his splendid portion. Today, O Savitar, grant us progeny and good fortune; drive away evil dreams and remove all misfortunes from us; bring us what is auspicious. For Aditi, through the power of Savitar, may we acquire all desirable things, blamelessly. Today, with hymns, we choose the true Savitar, lord of all gods, master of truth. He, self-governing, comes forth at the front of both day and night, never ceasing. With his song, he proclaims all creation; Savitar brings forth and bestows all things. Let us now praise Parjanya, the roaring bull, ever generous, who places the seed in the plants as their embryo. He destroys trees and slays demons, shaking the whole world with his mighty force. Even the innocent tremble when Parjanya thunders and strikes down the wicked. Like a charioteer urging his horses, he sends forth his messengers—the rains. From afar, his thunder resounds like a lion when Parjanya makes the sky pour. The winds blow, lightning flashes, the plants awaken, and the sky pours; nourishment is born for the world when Parjanya fills the earth with seed. By his command, the earth bows, the hoofed creatures stir, and all the plants thrive. O Parjanya, grant us great protection. O Maruts, grant us rain from the sky, pour out the streams of the mighty stallion; come near with thunder, O Asura, our father, and sprinkle the waters. Thunder, place the embryo, circle with your chariot above the waters, draw forth the deep and well-filled, let the streams from the clouds unite. Pour out the great vessel, let the channels flow abundantly; fill the sky and earth with ghee—let there be good drinking for the cows. When you roar and thunder, Parjanya, striking down the wicked, all on earth rejoice. You have made rain, seized the thunderbolt, stirred the fields, and moved beyond; you have generated plants for food—what wisdom have you given to the peoples? Earth, you have become strong among the mountains, bearing both the small and the mighty. By your greatness, you conquer the vast and are victorious. Hymns resound for you, O wanderer; as horses neigh for the prize, so do people strive for your favor, O splendid one. Even the firm trees you shatter upon the earth with your power, when your lightning from the cloud rains down showers. Now let the great hymn go forth to the sovereign Varuṇa, deep and dear, renowned. Like a tanner, he has stretched the earth for the sun. In the forests, he spread the midspace, gave strength to the swift, milk to the cows; in hearts, Varuṇa placed wisdom, in the waters Agni, in heaven the sun, in Soma the thunder. Varuṇa sent forth the low-hanging cloud and the cavern between earth and sky; with it, as king of all the world, he distributes rain like grain upon the earth. He raises up the earth, the wide ground, and the sky when he commands the milk to flow. Together with the cloud, the mountains dwell, mighty and heroic, breaking forth. This is the great magic of renowned Varuṇa: standing as if by measure in the midspace, he has encompassed the earth with the sun.
