With clear discernment, Mitra and Varuṇa uphold the laws of the cosmos, sustaining the eternal order by the might of the Asura’s power. Through the force of truth, they govern all the worlds and set the radiant sun—like a wondrous chariot—upon its path in the sky. In reverence, the people call upon Varuṇa, the chastiser, and Mitra, seeking their embrace as one seeks the shelter of strong arms, yearning for the light. Their arms, guided by wisdom, are invoked to come forth and be praised, for the favor of Mitra and Varuṇa is desired by all peoples. The devotee prays to walk the path of Mitra, to abide in his way, and to dwell in the gentle, harmless protection that they offer. With heartfelt devotion, a fitting hymn is placed before Mitra and Varuṇa, for in their house, both the generous and the singers are renowned and cherished. May Mitra, with his gracious aids, and Varuṇa, come to the assembly. In their own house, they bring increase for the generous and for friends alike. Varuṇa, bearer of great and mighty sovereignty, is asked to make wide space for the people, so that they may gain strength, wealth, and well-being. At the bright dawn, the worshipful ones of divine power are called to rush forth, accompanied by the white cow and men bearing the pressed Soma, their faces shining with praise, like elephants in their vigor. True wisdom belongs to the one who perceives and speaks in the assembly of the gods—whose words are accepted by the clear-seeing Varuṇa or Mitra. These two, kings of splendid radiance and far-reaching fame, are the true lords, upholders of order, righteous in every generation. For help, the devotee calls upon these ancient allies, the best companions, swift as good horses and clear in understanding, to win strength and speed forward. Even from distress, Mitra leads forth to a dwelling, for his favor is ever-present and his goodwill bountiful. Under Mitra’s renowned protection, free from sin and guided by him, the people seek always to remain with Varuṇa’s favor. Mitra and Varuṇa are asked to guide the people and lead them, never abandoning the generous nor diminishing the protection of the seers. Perceiving and wise, mortals seek Varuṇa, the shining lord of order, dedicating themselves to him for great striving. Mitra and Varuṇa possess unshaken sovereignty and true lordship; by their command, radiant light is set among men. To them, hymns are offered for chariots, for the wide pastures of cattle, for well-praised gifts. With ancient marvels of skill, they perceive the people with their sign, pure in wisdom. The order they uphold is famed among seers—ever-flowing, unaging, and abundant with streams. With Mitra’s favoring gaze, the wise strive for wide protection and self-rule. The gods have established the unshaken, worshipful, great law—Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman—the highest sovereignty among the Ādityas. When Varuṇa and Mitra sit upon their golden seat, sustaining the peoples, they grant favor to those who praise them. All-knowing, Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman observe everything, guarding mortals from harm as a rule. They are true, ever touching the order, righteous in every generation, good guides and givers, who set wide space even from distress. The thoughts of those who praise turn again and again to Mitra, Varuṇa, and the Atris. The people are called to sing forth with exalted voice to Mitra and Varuṇa, whose sovereignty is mighty and high. Both are renowned among the gods, their foundation is ghee, and they are praised among the divine. They are asked to grant the great wealth of earth and the riches of heaven, for their power is great among the gods. With truth, they join truth; seeking strong insight, the two gods, free from deceit, grow ever stronger. Heaven and earth, givers of rain, and the lords of waters, seek the vast hollow of Dānumatī. Varuṇa upholds three realms, and Mitra three heavens and three spaces; ever-growing, they guard the ruler’s law and protect the unbroken order. The cows rich in refreshment belong to Varuṇa; the honeyed rivers yield to Mitra; three mighty bulls, bearers of seed, shine among the three seats. At dawn, the goddess Aditi is invoked; at midday, when the sun is high, Mitra and Varuṇa are called for wealth, prosperity, and the well-being of offspring and descendants. As supporters of the shining realm and the expanse, the divine Ādityas uphold both heaven and earth; the immortal gods do not hinder the firm laws of Mitra and Varuṇa. There is abundant help in them; their good favor is sought with devotion. By being true, may their favor be attained for protection, and may the people become their Rudras. The Rudras are asked to guard with their protections and to deliver with saving help, so that enemies may be overcome by one’s own strength. Let there be no sharing in the wonder-working spirit of others, neither by remainder nor by wasting away. Mitra and Varuṇa are invited to come, delighting in praise, to approach the lovely sacrifice. For they are the wise rulers of all, and as lords, they are asked to grant the fullness of understanding.
