Mitra and Varuṇa, the great guardians of the cosmic order, act always without cruelty, their hands ever engaged in right action. Together with Ilā, they protect the devotee, upholding the thousand-pillared law as unassailable kings whose power none can overthrow. Their presence shines forth brilliantly: the golden channel and pillar of their domain gleam like a chariot harnessed to celestial steeds. In fields that flourish under their gaze, marked by prosperity, the honeyed sweetness of their favor is sought and found by those who honor them. As dawn breaks and the sky brightens, the golden form and pillar of the sun are lifted up. Mitra and Varuṇa rise from the depths, casting their gaze upon Aditi and Diti, the mothers of all. With their boundless, unwavering, and generous protection, they shield the world; and so, those who strive under their care are granted life and prosperity. Standing as vigilant guardians of truth, Mitra and Varuṇa ride upon their chariot, upholding the righteous order in the highest heaven. For those whom they favor, sweet rain pours from the sky, nourishing all beings. Sovereign kings of all creation, they shine with insight in the assembly of the gods. Their bounty, rain, and immortality are sought by all, as their thunder moves between heaven and earth. Mitra and Varuṇa, mighty sovereigns, are wise among men and lords of heaven and earth. With wondrous clouds, they send forth their sounds, and by the power of the Asura, they rain upon the world. Their power is established in the heavens; the sun, their shining weapon, moves across the sky. Sometimes, they cover the sun with clouds and rain, and the honeyed drops of Parjanya, the rain-giver, stream down. The Maruts, companions of the storm, yoke their splendid chariot, swift as heroes in contests, and the bright thunders roll through the spaces. Mitra and Varuṇa, sovereigns, rain from the sky, milking its riches for the earth below. Parjanya’s voice resounds, radiant and loud, as the Maruts dwell in the clouds by the wondrous power of these two gods, sending rain upon the spotless, ruddy sky. With clear discernment, Mitra and Varuṇa uphold the laws and protect the order by the Asura’s might. By truth, they rule over all worlds and place the sun, that wondrous chariot, in the sky. With hymns, the people call upon Varuṇa the chastiser and Mitra, seeking their light as one might seek the embrace of strong arms. May those arms, guided by wisdom, come forth to be praised, for their favor is sought by all peoples. The devotee longs to walk the path of Mitra, to abide in the shelter of their harmless protection. With devotion, the poet offers fitting hymns to Mitra and Varuṇa, for in their house, generosity and song are renowned. May Mitra with his gracious aids, and Varuṇa, come to the assembly, bringing increase to the generous and to friends. O Varuṇa, you who bear mighty sovereignty with Mitra, make wide space for us, that we may gain strength, wealth, and well-being. At the bright dawn, worshipful and divine, the people hasten with the white cow and the pressed Soma, their faces shining with praise, as elephants move with powerful feet. He who is truly wise perceives the gods and speaks in the assembly of the divine; his words are accepted by Varuṇa or Mitra, the clear-seeing. These kings, radiant and famed, are true lords who uphold order, righteous in every generation. To them, the best allies, with good horses and clear understanding, the people call for help, seeking strength and success. Even from distress, Mitra leads forth to a dwelling, his favor ever present and bountiful. Under Mitra’s protection, renowned and free from sin, and guided by Varuṇa’s favor, the people seek to dwell. Mitra and Varuṇa guide their people, never abandoning the generous nor diminishing the protection granted to seers. Mortals, perceiving and wise, seek Varuṇa, the shining guardian of order, dedicating themselves to great striving. Mitra and Varuṇa possess unshaken sovereignty and true lordship; by their command, radiant light is set among men. To them, with hymns, are sought chariots, wide pastures for cattle, and well-praised gifts. With ancient marvels of skill, Mitra and Varuṇa perceive the people, pure in wisdom. Their order is famed among seers, ever-flowing, unaging, and abundant like streams. When, with Mitra’s favoring gaze, the wise strive for wide protection and self-rule, they are blessed. O gods, you have established the unshaken, worshipful, and great law, O Ādityas—Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman—possessors of the highest sovereignty. When Varuṇa and Mitra sit in their golden seat, sustaining the peoples, they grant favor to all. All-knowing, Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman observe the worlds, guarding mortals from harm as a rule. True to order and righteous in every age, they are good guides and givers, setting wide space even from distress. Who among men has praised Mitra or Varuṇa? The thoughts of the wise turn to them, and to the Atris who sing their hymns. Let all sing forth to Mitra and Varuṇa with exalted voice, for their sovereignty is great and mighty. Kings with ghee as their foundation, they are renowned among gods and praised among the divine. May they grant the wealth of earth and the riches of heaven, for their power among the gods is vast. With truth, they join truth; seeking insight, they grow ever stronger, free from deceit. Heaven and earth, givers of rain, and the lords of waters, seek the vast hollow of Dānumatī, the celestial river, fulfilling the needs of all creation.
