O wise and radiant deities, you who see truly, guide mortals with your flawless insight. You are ever attentive to the invocations offered in sacrifice, hearing the prayers that rise from the sacred fires. Worthy of all offerings, you who vanquish foes, may you grant us the wealth we long for, shining before us as a beacon of hope. O goddess, bear this humble praise of mine—carry it swiftly, like a skilled charioteer, to Dārbhya, the son of Urmya. Aditi, motherly and gracious, speak to me at the pressing of the Soma, at the moment of the chariot race, for my longing remains steadfast and does not leave me. Here dwells the generous charioteer, amidst rich meadows and sheltered by the mountains—a noble soul among those blessed with abundance. In the heart of creation, truth hides within truth itself, at the firm foundation where the sun’s horses are unyoked. There, in that sacred place, stood a multitude—ten hundred together—and among them I saw the one, the greatest in splendor of all the gods. Such is your greatness, O Mitra and Varuṇa. By day, those who stand in devotion draw forth your power. You cause the cows of your celestial stream to multiply, and for you, a single axle turns, upholding the cosmic order. By your might, O Mitra and Varuṇa, kings of surpassing greatness, you support earth and sky. You foster the growth of plants, cause the herds to flourish, send down nourishing rain, and bestow long life upon your devotees. Let your well-harnessed, swift-footed horses bring you near, drawing your chariot to us. The channels of ghee are prepared in your honor, and from the sky, rivers flow to greet you. Following your renowned and unfailing wisdom, protected as a sacred seat by the power of holy words, you dwell in the depths, O Mitra and Varuṇa, together with Ilā, holding firm to skill and reverence. Without cruelty, with righteous hands, you protect your people, O Mitra and Varuṇa, together with Ilā. As kings, unassailable in power, you uphold the thousand-pillared order, steadfast and united. The golden channel and pillar of your glory shine forth, like a chariot drawn by celestial steeds. In the fertile field, marked and flourishing, may we taste the honey of your favor. With the coming of dawn, the golden form and pillar of the sun are raised. You, Varuṇa and Mitra, ascend from the depths and behold both Aditi and Diti, the mothers of all. With your vast, unfailing, and generous protection—unbroken, O guardians of the world—shield us, O Mitra and Varuṇa, so that, striving, we may live and prosper in your grace. As guardians of truth, you stand upon your chariot, upholding the righteous order in the highest heaven. For those whom you favor, O Mitra and Varuṇa, sweet rain pours from the sky, blessing the earth. You are sovereign kings of all beings, shining in the assembly with wisdom and insight. We seek your rain, your bounty, your immortality, as the thunders roll through heaven and earth. Sovereign, mighty, bull-like lords of heaven and earth, O Mitra and Varuṇa, wise among men, you command the wondrous clouds to sound, and by the power of the Asura, you rain upon the sky. Your power, O Mitra and Varuṇa, is established in heaven. The sun moves with its shining weapon, and you cover it with cloud and rain, as the honeyed drops of Parjanya stream forth. The Maruts yoke their splendid, easy chariot, like heroes in contests, O Mitra and Varuṇa. The bright thunders move through the spaces, and you, O sovereigns, rain from the sky, milking its riches. Parjanya proclaims a resounding, radiant voice, O Mitra and Varuṇa. The Maruts dwell in the clouds by your wondrous power, raining upon the spotless, ruddy sky. With discernment, O Mitra and Varuṇa, you uphold the laws, protecting the order by the Asura’s might. By truth you rule the worlds, placing the sun, that wondrous chariot, in the sky. With our hymns, we call upon Varuṇa the chastiser and Mitra, seeking their light as those who move within the embrace of strong arms. May those arms, guided by wisdom, reach out to us, for your favor, O both, is sought by all peoples. May I attain the path of Mitra, may I walk his way. In the shelter of your dear and harmless protection, may we dwell together in harmony. With you two, O Mitra and Varuṇa, may I offer a fitting hymn, for in your house, both the generous and the singers find renown. May Mitra, with his gracious aids, and Varuṇa, come to our assembly. In your own house, for the generous and for friends, you bring abundance. O Varuṇa, you two who bear great and mighty sovereignty, grant us wide space, that we may gain strength, wealth, and well-being. At the bright dawn, O worshipful ones of divine power, come to me with the white cow, as men bearing the pressed Soma, their faces shining with praise, like elephants with radiant feet. He who perceives truly is wise; let him speak to us in the assembly of the gods—he whose words are accepted by Varuṇa or Mitra, the clear-seeing. For they, the kings of splendid radiance and far-reaching fame, are true lords, upholders of order, righteous in every generation. To you, for help, I call upon the former ones, the best allies, with good horses and clear understanding, to win strength and speed our way. Even from distress, Mitra leads forth to a dwelling, for his favor is ever present and his goodwill bountiful. May we be under Mitra’s renowned protection, free from sin, guided by you, always with Varuṇa’s favor. You two, Mitra and Varuṇa, guide and lead this people; do not abandon our generous one, nor let the protection of us seers be diminished. Perceiving and wise, O gods, mortals seek you, O Varuṇa, lord of shining order. Let him dedicate himself to you for great striving. For you possess unshaken sovereignty, true lordship; at your command, radiant light is set among men. To you we turn for chariots, for the wide pasture of cattle, for well-praised gifts; with hymns we honor you. You two, with ancient marvels of skill, perceive the people with your sign, pure in wisdom. That order, O earth, of great fame among the seers, ever flows—unaging and abundant with streams. When, O Mitra, we and the wise, with your favoring gaze, strive for the wide protection, for self-rule, we rest secure in your boundless, benevolent care.
