Resounding with the voices of trees and the wisdom of the well-born, the divine streams flow forth, shining in straight, melodious hymns. These sacred waters, the womb of all offspring, grow radiant in the sacrifice, and their wives—those gentle, life-giving rivers—are preserved within the sacred rite. As each being appears, so is he spoken of, and with his shadow, he is set beside the swift waters. May these powers grant us vast strength—abundant, heroic, and unfailing might. The first-born, the originator, surpasses all rivals with a noble mind; he is the Sun, the sage who guards the home, circling all. May he grant us shelter and wealth, for he is the ever-watchful protector. The greater one, marked by the sign of sacrifice, moves among the gods, bearing their names. As he is placed, so he is seen, even in darkness; he carries all, doing good as is his nature. Foremost, he stands at the ocean’s edge, never failing in the offering where all paths meet. In the heart, the flame of fire trembles, where pure and bound thought resides. By the powers of dominion and mind, he speaks for the worshipper, the companion. With the songs of the calf, let us fill the strongest prize, the mighty wealth that even the wise seek. The eagle, the mother, the joy, the power of the all-protecting, worshipful, wondrous one—each seeks the other for attainment. They know the horns and come to the flowing drink. Ever generous, the worshipper destroys enemies, praised by many for knowledge. With such guidance, blessings approach and shine, and the group is united in goodness. He who supports the sacrificer is the true lord, unwavering among all, the awakener of thoughts. Like a cow rich in milk, he pours forth nourishing juice, reciting hymns and ever advancing, never sleeping. He who keeps vigil is desired by the hymns; to him the chants go. To this ever-watchful one, Soma says, “I am yours in friendship, dwelling with you.” Agni, the vigilant one, is thus praised. To him the hymns and chants are offered, and Soma declares his friendship and presence. You, O god, have come to know the sky, shining with the rays of dawn. You scatter the darkness with your beams, open the barriers from high heaven, and drive away human obstacles. The Sun, like a wise mother of cows, spreads light and dispels darkness, while the rivers, shining, roar as they flow. The firm heaven stands like a well-set pillar. For this hymn, the mountain’s embryo, for the ancient birth of the great ones, the mountain opens wide and heaven accomplishes, making the earth resound. With pleasing words, we call upon Indra and Agni for help, and the wise, skilled in sacrifice, worship the Maruts with their hymns. Let us become wise today, removing all evil and attaining greatness. Let us drive away hatred and burn it away, moving forward toward the sacrificer. Together, friends, let us create the thought by which our mother found the cow’s stall, by which Manu conquered the many-colored one, and the merchant found hidden treasure. With ten months of effort, the Navagvas, pressing with their hands, praised the mountain. Saramā, seeking truth, found the cows, and the Angirases accomplished all true deeds. All the gods marvel at her shining and power, when the Angirases move with the cows; the fountain of these is in the highest seat. Saramā, by the path of truth, found the cows. Let the Sun, yoked with seven horses, go forth, measuring the field with his long path. The swift hawk flies straight, and the young sage shines among the cows. The Sun has mounted, bright in color, when the green-backed steeds are harnessed. The wise ones, like a boat with water, have brought it up, and the listening waters draw near. For you, I have placed thought in the waters, full of light, by which the Navagvas completed ten months. May this thought protect us by the gods and carry us over distress. Like a wise horse, unyoked, I place the harness on the helpful one, guiding it straight ahead. I neither loosen nor bind, for the leader knows the path. Agni, Indra, Varuṇa, Mitra, and all the gods—Maruts, Viṣṇu, the Aśvins, Rudra, the goddesses, Pūṣan, Bhaga, Sarasvatī—may they be pleased and come forth. Indra and Agni, Mitra and Varuṇa, Aditi, the Sun, Earth, Sky, Maruts, Mountains, Waters—Viṣṇu, Pūṣan, Bṛhaspati, Bhaga, Savitar—are invoked for help and blessing. May Viṣṇu and Vāta grant us wealth, may Soma bring happiness, and may the Ṛbhus, Aśvins, Tvaṣṭṛ, and Vibhvan favor us for riches. May the host of the Maruts approach, and the worshipful one in heaven be seated on the sacred grass. May Bṛhaspati, Pūṣan, Yama, Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman grant us protection. May the generous mountains and guardian rivers protect us, and may Bhaga come with strength and help. May wide-ranging Aditi hear my invocation. May the radiant wives of the gods favor us, granting success and victory. Those who dwell on earth and preside over the waters—may these gracious goddesses bestow protection. May the goddesses, wives of the gods—Indrāṇī, Agnāyī, Aśvinī, and Rāk—come to us. May Varuṇānī of the two worlds hear, and may the mothers of order bless us. She, setting forth, ascends the sky, proclaiming her presence. The great mother awakens her daughter. The youthful one, full of thought, brings forth, calling to the fathers in their abode. Swiftly moving, they go forth, striving, reaching the navel of immortality. Their endless paths, from every side, the heavens and earth traverse together. The bull, the ocean, the ruddy, the splendid-winged, enters the womb of the former father. Placed in the midst of heaven, the spotted stone stretches to the ends of the realms. Four bear it for safety, while ten nurture the embryo for movement. Threefold are his highest cows, wandering around the ends of heaven at once. This form, this dwelling, people move about when the rivers and waters stand still. Two bear the mother, others are born here, twin-born with their kin. The waters spread out their thoughts for him, as mothers weave garments for their son. Joyfully, the mighty ones approach the meeting place, and the brides go along the path of heaven. May this be auspicious for us, O Mitra and Varuṇa, O Agni. May we attain depth and a firm foundation. Homage to the great heaven for its seat. To the beloved abode, the mighty power, the self-glorious, the great, we direct our thoughts. When the wondrous one stretches out the waters from the sky, choosing them, the heroic extend the path throughout the realm. The waters flow together, others withdraw, and the divine people cross over with those who came before. With stones, with days and nights, he wields the strongest bolt, the wondrous one. Whether a hundred move in his house, rolling together, they turn day and night. Thus, the hymns celebrate the ever-renewing order, the guardians of the world, the lights that drive away darkness, the rivers that nourish, and the gods and goddesses who protect, guide, and bless all beings.
