O mighty Agni, you strengthen the very seed of the earth, sustaining all life with your power. Tritha, child of the waters, brings forth abundant gifts, and you, Agni, praised with hymns, your flaming hair blazing, cut through the dense woods, opening pathways for all beings. How shall we approach the great Rudra, Kadra the wise, and Bhaga with our words? May the waters and herbs, the heavens, forests, and the leafy-haired mountains shield us with their protection. Let the lord of nourishment hear our prayers—the mountain, swift and powerful, who encompasses all. May the shining waters, like fortresses, listen as they flow around the mighty hills, ever watchful. Those great ones whom we praise, who bear wondrous gifts, know our hearts. Even the birds seek their shelter, and mortals, in awe and reverence, follow them, trembling before their majesty. Now I speak of the divine and earthly births for Sumakha, invoking the heavens and the radiant mountains to grow, and the wide rivers to swell, overcoming all obstacles in their path. At every step, may old age be set aside for me; may the strong protector watch over me with care. Let the great mother, nourishing earth, grant us her favor, guiding us with upright hands and along straight paths, as the wise would wish. How shall we serve the generous ones with proper reverence? Let us approach the Maruts with praise and renown. May Ahirbudhnya keep harm far from us, and may our guardian always remain near. For offspring and wealth, mortals seek out the gods, yearning for their blessings. Let us place auspiciousness upon our bodies, and if decay should come, may Nirriti devour it, leaving us unharmed. O gods, may your gracious favor, which brings strength, be ours. O Vasus, may we receive the blessing of the cow. May the generous goddess, swift and kind, come to us, bringing good fortune. Let Ilā, mother of the herd, draw near; may she be praised by our rivers or by Urvaśī. May Urvaśī, honored in the broad heavens, and those who are abundant, bring forth the fruits of our offerings. May the nourishing earth grant us abundance, fulfilling all our needs. Now, let us seek Varuṇa, the most peaceful, with our song; let us call upon Mitra, Bhaga, and Aditi. May the fivefold priest, born of the spotted mare, listen to us. May the mighty Asura, bringer of joy, guide us safely. May Aditi accept my hymn, as a mother cherishes her beloved son. The sacred word, dear to the gods, is what I offer to Mitra and Varuṇa, the givers of joy. Raise up the most skilled among the wise; let him be honored with honey and ghee. May Savitṛ, the radiant god, grant us the shining wealth we desire, wealth that is well-placed and beneficial. Indra, lead us with your mind, with cows, with the swift and golden ones, with well-being. With sacred words and all that pleases the gods, and with their favor, unite us in harmony. May Bhaga, Savitṛ, portion of wealth, Indra the conqueror of Vṛtra, the riches, the Ṛbhus, the prize, and Puraṃdhī—may all these immortal, mighty ones protect us. Of the Maruts, unconquered, victorious, ever-young, I proclaim their deeds. None before, nor after, nor any new, O generous one, has matched your strength. First, let us praise Bṛhaspati, the bestower of treasures and wealth, who is invoked by many, most auspicious, and always responds to our call. With your help, O Bṛhaspati, may the generous and heroic remain unharmed. Those who give horses, cows, or garments, those fortunate ones, among them is true wealth. But let the one who seeks wealth yet offers no hymns depart from those who enjoy. Drive away those who rebel or hate the sacred word; O Sun, take them far from us. Whoever attacks the gods with evil, drive him away, O Maruts, with your power. Whoever insults your peace for petty desires, let him be cast down. Praise him who is strong, with a good bow, who rules all healing. Worship Rudra, the great, with offerings and reverence; honor the divine Asura for the sake of our well-being. May the waters—wives of the mighty—obedient, skillful, and powerful, the rivers shaped by the wise, Sarasvati, and the shining Raka, all gracious and splendid, grant us a clear path. I offer a new hymn for the great ones, a prayer for good shelter, a freshly born song; for he who shapes forms in the breasts of the daughter has fashioned this for us, measuring out all forms. Now, O singer, praise with a good hymn the roaring, thundering Lord of nourishment, who stirs the waters and streams, sends forth the rain, and makes the heavens and earth swell with lightning. This praise is for the Maruts, the youthful sons of Rudra, worthy of our song. With desire for wealth and well-being, let us call them; let us praise the tireless, spotted-horsed ones. Let this praise reach earth, the midspace, the trees, and plants, that I may obtain wealth. May the god who is easily invoked be gracious to me. May Mother Earth not place us in misfortune. May we dwell, O gods, in your wide, unhindered space. With the new favor of the Ashvins, may we come with joy and good guidance. Bring us wealth, bring us heroes, bring us all immortal blessings. Let the swift-flowing, nourishing cows come to us with their sweet milk; the seven great, bountiful ones, invoked by the singer, approach with abundance and joy. With praise and reverence, let us turn to Heaven and Earth, unshaken, for strength. The father and mother, sweet-spoken and skillful-handed, may they grant us glory in every offering. O priests, having prepared the sweet offerings, bring the bright, lovely Soma to Vayu. Like a first Hotar, protect us from harm, O god; may we delight in your honeyed draught. Ten fingers harness their arms to the stone—the skillful ones who press Soma; the bright-fingered one, dwelling on the mountain, has milked the pure, shining juice. This Soma is pressed for you, O Indra, who delights in it, for strength, skill, and great exhilaration. Let your two bay steeds, well-yoked to the chariot, come near; make yourself dear when invoked. Bring to us, O Agni, the great, generous, wise goddess, the gracious one, worthy of offerings, together with the divine wives, for the joy of the sweet draught, by the paths of the gods. He whom the inspired ones anoint and magnify, adorned and kindled by Agni, like a father his dear son—he, the hot drink, has sat down kindling Agni, the immortal. Let the great, lofty, most auspicious hymn, like a messenger, go to the Ashvins for invocation; come together with joy, bring the treasure, as a navel supports the axle. I will proclaim the praise of the swift, mighty Pūṣan and Vāyu—those who inspire gifts and thoughts, who bestow wealth, strength, and self-power. With your names, O Maruts, may the summoner call all of you in your forms, O Jātavedas; come to the sacrifice, to the singer's good praise, all of you Maruts, with every help. From the great heaven, from the lofty mountain, may Sarasvati, worthy of worship, come to the sacrifice; the goddess, accepting the offering, clothed in ghee, may she hear our strong, uplifting speech. Thus, with reverence and praise, the seekers of the divine call upon the gods, the mothers and fathers of all, the givers of abundance, the guardians and healers, that life may be nourished, protected, and filled with blessings.
