Agni, radiant and wise, hear this word offered by the mighty. You, bright-lipped lord, are revered by the three—praised by them with hymns and exalted in their sacred songs. To you, Agni, we turn with our prayers: bring us the wealth that conquers, the prize of glory, that we may overcome all peoples and rise victorious in every contest. O Agni, vanquisher in battles, grant us abundance, for you are the wondrous giver of strength, bestowing riches that overflow with cattle. Across the lands, all peoples united, those who spread the sacred grass in preparation, seek you as the beloved Hotar in their homes, yearning for your many blessings. For you, Agni, universal protector, have established strength to shield us from hostility. Shine upon us in these dwellings with the fullness of your abundance; shine brightly, radiant one, fill our lives with your light. Be near us, Agni—our protector, gracious and sheltering guardian. You, generous and famed for your bounty, bestow the most radiant wealth. Remember us, hear our call, and deliver us from all harm. To you, most radiant and shining Agni, we seek favor for ourselves and for our friends. To you, Agni, we sing for help; may you be our wealth. May you, son of seers, true to the law, drive away our foes. You are true, Agni, whom even the ancient gods kindled—Hotar of the delightful tongue, shining forth when splendid offerings are made. With your most excellent and gracious favor, be mindful of us. Shine upon us with wealth, with noble praises. Agni reigns among the gods and dwells among mortals; he is our bearer of offerings—worship him with prayers. Most renowned and wise, Agni is unconquered. He makes the worshipper’s voice heard, and grants a son as lord to the devotee. Agni bestows a true lord, victorious in battle among men; he gives a swift horse—a champion, unbeaten. Whatever is most excellent, radiant Agni, we offer to you with great praise; from you arise wealth and strength, as a queen arises from her throne. Your radiant hymns resound like the echo of stone, and your thunderous voice rises to the sky of its own accord. Thus, Agni, eager for wealth, we have praised you, the mighty. May you lead us safely past all foes, O wise one. Agni, pure one, with your shining light and delightful, divine tongue, bring the gods here and worship them. You, whom we invoke—shining brightly, adorned with ghee, visible as the sun—bring the gods for our offering. O wise one, we kindle you, Agni, radiant and great at the sacrifice, as the bearer of offerings. Come, Agni, with all the gods to receive the oblation; we choose you as the Hotar. Bring heroic strength to the worshipper who presses the Soma; sit with the gods on the sacred grass. Kindled, Agni—conqueror of thousands—you uphold the rites and serve as the gods’ messenger, worthy of praise. Place Agni, knower of all births, youngest and bearer of the offering, as the divine priest. Let the sacrifice, following its course, approach you, O most godlike; let the sacred grass be spread for the gods to take their seat. Here, let the Maruts, the Ashvins, Mitra, Varuna, and all the host of gods find their places. The generous lord, never failing, is praised by me—the mighty Asura, most bountiful, strong with kine. Agni of the three Vrishnis, with ten thousands, the universal, the three-red, is ever aware. He gives a hundred and twenty cows and well-yoked, swift steeds—this universal Agni, praised and growing strong. May he grant protection to Tryaruna. Thus, Agni, granting your favor to the newest, Trasadasyu—who praises me with many songs—Tryaruna glorifies me with the ancient hymn. He who says to me, “For the Ashvamedha, for the lord of the sun,” gives with a hymn a companion for gain, bestows wisdom for immortality. His fierce ones, a hundred strong, urge on the gifts of the Ashvamedha, like Soma juices, three-headed. Indra and Agni, at the Ashvamedha with a hundred gifts, uphold great power, undying in the vast heaven like the sun. Kindled, Agni shines with his flame in the sky, facing the dawn and spreading widely. The gods, desiring the offering, come forth with reverence, with clarified butter. As you are kindled, you rule over immortality, joining with the one making the offering for their welfare. You bestow all wealth, Agni, and grant hospitality to the guest who stands at the forefront. Agni, strive for great good fortune; may your highest glories be ours. Unite us in strong kinship, make us well-yoked, and stand against our enemies with your might. Of you, Agni, kindled and brilliant, I praise the splendor; you are the bull, full of glory, kindled in every sacrifice. Summoned, you lead the gods to the rite, for you are truly the bearer of the oblation. Offer and honor Agni with pure intention at the sacrifice; choose him as the bearer of the oblation. Threefold is Aryaman, the divine father of men; three are the shining realms he upholds in heaven. The Maruts, pure in their strength, praise you; and you, Indra, are their sage and steadfast hero.
