As the darkness of night recedes, Ushas, the radiant Dawn, arises and fills the vast expanse with her shining light. She dispels the gloom, faithfully following the eternal law that guides her. Her brilliant rays stretch high into the sky, reaching the beloved midspace and illuminating it with her gentle radiance. In this sacred time, we turn our thoughts to Savitar, the wise and mighty god, seeking the great gift he bestows. Through his own power, Savitar protects those who worship him, bringing us safely through the days with his shining lights. He, the supporter of heaven and lord of all beings, dons his tawny robe as the far-seeing sage. Spreading his radiance, Savitar inspires auspicious praise and fills both the celestial and earthly realms with his presence. By his divine order, Savitar establishes the world, stretching out his arms and setting all things in motion with the rhythm of days. Unerring in his course, he makes the worlds shine and guards all creatures with his ordinances. Firm in his vow, he stands as king upon the great path, his arms ever extended in protection. Savitar’s greatness encompasses the threefold midspace, the three regions, and the three lights. He rules over three heavens, three earths, and three waters, sheltering us with his triple ordinances and sustaining us by his own might. As the all-fostering, great-minded god, master of both the moving and the still, Savitar grants us shelter and a safe dwelling, shielding us from harm in threefold measure. May Savitar come to us with the changing seasons, increasing our home and blessing us with good offspring and abundant food. Let him quicken our lives with the alternation of nights and days, and bestow upon us wealth and children. At this time of day, Savitar is especially worthy of praise. Honored by mortals, he distributes treasures and grants us the finest wealth. To the gods, Savitar gives immortality and the highest share, and from that source he loosens the bonds for the living, granting mortal beings the gift of life. If we, through weakness or error, have committed unconscious wrong among the gods or among men, may Savitar grant us sinlessness and cleanse us of our faults. The measure of Savitar cannot be surpassed, for he upholds all the worlds and bestows upon us the breadth of earth and the expanse of the sky. From the great mountains and from every dwelling, Savitar sends prosperity to households. His impulses, steadfast as birds in flight, remain ever true. May his swift companions, who bring good fortune three times each day, be with us. May Indra, Heaven and Earth, the river Sindhu with her waters, and Aditi with the Adityas grant us shelter and protection. Among the Vasus, we ask: who is the giver of garments, the protector? May Heaven and Earth, and Aditi, keep us from fear. O mighty Varuna and Mitra, who among you grants safe passage for mortals at the sacrifice? Those ancient ones, from the very beginning, set forth the everlasting ordinances. As they ascend, unfailing and wise, they shine with righteous thoughts, upholding the wondrous laws. With hymns, we praise Aditi and the sacred Sindhu for well-being and friendship. As Day and Night descend upon us, may the steadfast Ushas and Night act for our benefit. Aryaman and Varuna have stretched out the paths, and Agni, the lord of food, leads us toward good fortune. Indra and Vishnu, praised among men, bring us protection and come to our aid. From the mountain, may the Maruts and Bhaga the savior send us their protections. May Mitra, the lord, guard us from harm and keep us from oppression. Heaven and Earth, with the serpent of the deep, are praised as goddesses with our offerings. Like rivers flowing together into the sea, may the warm, sweet streams unite their waters for our benefit. May Aditi and the gods protect us, and may the savior god come swiftly to our aid. We do not wish to transgress the command of Mitra and Varuna, nor stray from the path of Agni. Agni is the lord of wealth and good fortune; may he bestow these blessings upon us. O Dawn, gracious one, bring us generous gifts and many prizes, endowed with strength. May Savitar, Bhaga, Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, and Indra come to us with their bounty. O mighty Heaven and Earth, supreme and shining, be present here. When you measured out the wide spaces, the mighty bull spread them forth with his powers. The goddess, honored together with the gods, stands firm and unshaken, true to order and free from guile, leading the sacrifice with shining hymns. The wise one, self-dependent among beings, begot Heaven and Earth and joined together the broad and deep realms, harmonizing them at their foundations. Heaven and Earth, united like devoted spouses, grant us great protections and guard us always, making us charioteers at the sacrifice by your wisdom. To you both, pure and mighty, we offer our great hymn of praise. Renewing yourselves in your own forms, you rule with inherent power and uphold the ancient order. Great is the aid of Mitra, who upholds truth and encompasses the sacrifice, sitting around it with care. With the Lord of the field as our ally, we shall prosper as if riding a victorious chariot. May he, who nourishes cattle and horses, be gracious to us. O Lord of the field, pour out a sweet, abundant wave for us, like a cow her milk. May the lords of nectar bless us with honeyed, well-purified ghee. Let the plants, the heavens, and the waters be sweet for us; may the midspace be filled with sweetness. May the Lord of the field be sweet to us, and may we move upon him without harm. Let the oxen, men, and plough be auspicious; may the yokes be tied with good fortune, and may the goad be raised with blessing. O Śunāsīra, accept our prayer—you who made the milk in the sky—sprinkle this field with your favor. Come near, O fortunate Sītā, whom we honor so that you may be gracious and fruitful for us. May Indra take hold of Sītā, may Pūṣan settle her, and may she, rich in milk, yield harvest after harvest. May our ploughshares till the earth with good fortune, may the ploughmen approach with auspiciousness, and may the rain-cloud, with honey and milk, along with Śunāsīra, bestow prosperity upon us all.
