In the earliest hours, the Dawns, those auspicious and fragrant daughters of heaven, awaken. Born of truth and reality, they shine with glorious radiance, bringing forth blessings to the singer who offers hymns in their honor. These Dawns move together, united in purpose, their presence spreading across the world. Like streams of cows released from their stalls, the goddesses of truth stir forth, awakening from their seats, bringing with them the promise of abundance. As waves rolling in harmony, the Dawns advance, their colors united, hiding the darkness with their pure, radiant bodies. Their shining forms dispel night, filling the world with light. O shining daughters of heaven, the people call upon you: grant us wealth filled with offspring, and may your awakening from your pleasant abode make us lords of noble strength. This prayer, this sign of sacrifice, is addressed to you, O Dawns, so that we may be renowned among people, and that heaven and earth, the goddesses, may grant us their favor. With each new day, the radiant daughter rises, awakening her sister; the daughter of heaven is seen, her presence unmistakable. Like a variegated, red mare among horses, she is the mother of cows, rich in milk, and a friend to the Ashvins. Ushas, you are indeed their companion, the mother of cows and the mistress of wealth. Wise and gentle, you keep away hatred and bestow fair speech; thus, we approach you with songs of praise. Your auspicious rays appear like streams of cows, opening wide a broad space for living. Shining one, you fill the wide expanse, dispelling darkness with your light, always following your own law. Your rays stretch to the sky, to the beloved midspace, illuminating all with your bright radiance. We then turn to Savitar, the wise lord, choosing his great gift by which he protects the worshipper with his own power. May this great god bring us through the days with his lights. Savitar, supporter of heaven and lord of beings, dons his tawny garment, spreading and filling the worlds, generating auspicious praise. He fills both celestial and earthly regions, establishing order and setting the world in motion with the days. Unerring, Savitar makes the worlds shine, protecting all creatures with his ordinances, steadfast in his vow, shining as king of the great path. By his greatness, Savitar encompasses the threefold midspace, the three regions, and the three lights. He rules over three heavens, three earths, and three waters, protecting us by his power. The great-minded, all-fostering god, master of both the moving and the stationary, may he grant us shelter, a triple protection from harm. May Savitar come with the seasons, increase our home, grant us good offspring and food, quicken us with nights and days, and bestow wealth and offspring upon us. Savitar has become worthy of praise, especially at this time of day, distributing treasures to mortals and granting the best wealth. To the gods, the first and most worshipful, Savitar bestows immortality, loosening the bonds for the living and granting lives to mortals. Whatever unconscious wrongs we have committed among the divine hosts, through human weakness, may Savitar grant us sinlessness here. The measure of Savitar cannot be surpassed, for he upholds all the world, bestowing the breadth of earth and the space of the sky. From the mountains and dwellings, Savitar bestows prosperity on households; his impulses remain steadfast like birds flying forth in various ways. His companions, who three times each day swiftly bring good fortune, join with Indra, Heaven and Earth, the river Sindhu, Aditi, and the Adityas to grant us shelter. The people call upon the Vasus: Who among you is the giver of garments, the protector? May Heaven and Earth, and Aditi, keep us from fear. O mighty Varuna and Mitra, who among you grants passage at the sacrifice for mortals? Those who set forth the ancient ordinances from the beginning, the unfailing wise ones, have established everlasting laws, shining with righteous thoughts. With hymns, Aditi and the river Sindhu are praised for well-being and friendship. As both Day and Night fall upon us, may Ushas and Night act for our benefit, undeceivable and auspicious. Aryaman and Varuna have stretched out the paths, and Agni, the lord of food, leads to good fortune. Indra and Vishnu, praised among men, are called to bring shelter and protection. From the mountain, may the protections of the Maruts and Bhaga the savior come to us. Mitra, the lord, is asked to guard us from harm born among men, preventing oppression. Heaven and Earth, with the serpent of the deep, are praised as goddesses with these chosen offerings. Like rivers flowing to the sea, may the streams unite their waters, full of warmth and sweetness. May Aditi, with the gods, protect us; may the savior save us without delay. The people acknowledge their unworthiness to transgress the command of Mitra and Varuna or the path of Agni. Agni is the lord of wealth and good fortune, and may he bestow these upon us. Dawn is called to bring generous gifts, many prizes, endowed with strength. May Savitar, Bhaga, Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, and Indra come to us with their bounty. Great Heaven and Earth, supreme and shining with pure rays, are invoked to be present. When they measured out the wide spaces, the mighty bull spread them forth with his powers. The goddess, together with the gods worthy of worship, is honored with sacrifices, standing firm and unshaken, true to order, free from guile, daughters of the god, leaders of the sacrifice, shining with pure hymns. He alone, self-dependent among beings, begot these Heaven and Earth; wise, he joined together the broad and deep realms, harmonizing them in their foundations. Now, Heaven and Earth, united like spouses, eager to help, are called to grant great protections. Worshipped by all, may they guard us, and by their wisdom, may we always be charioteers at the sacrifice. To Heaven and Earth, a great hymn of praise is offered; pure ones, come near for our glorification. Thus, the dawns, Savitar, and the gods are honored in reverent song, their blessings sought for wealth, protection, harmony, and the flourishing of all life.
