O Indra and Brihaspati, the sages and worshippers call upon you with yearning hearts, asking for wealth abundant—herds of a hundred cows, swift horses, and riches by the thousands. With songs and sacred chants, they invite you, Indra and Brihaspati, to the Soma pressing, that you may come to partake of the sacred drink, rejoicing in the house of the devotee and blessing his dwelling with your presence. Brihaspati, the mighty one who upholds the heavens with his power, stands upon the threefold seat, his thunderous voice resounding. The ancient seers, radiant and wise, placed him first, delighting in his speech. The swift and joyful ones, clear-sighted, gather near Brihaspati, protecting the source of the unbroken, ever-flowing milk. He is the guardian of its origin, ensuring abundance and nourishment. Those who seek truth and speak beyond the ordinary come close to Brihaspati. For him, the hidden places and wells yield honey, and even the stones pour forth sweetness in plenty. Brihaspati, first-born and shining in the highest heaven of light, with seven mouths and seven rays, scattered the darkness with his mighty voice. With sacred chants and hymns, Brihaspati, accompanied by his company, broke open Vala’s enclosure with his roar. As he, the sacrificer and the caller, was invoked, the imprisoned cows rushed forth to freedom. To the Father, the All-Gods, the mighty one, the worshippers offer reverence and oblations, praying for noble offspring, heroic sons, and mastery over wealth. He, the king, stands firm and strong, unshaken by adversaries. Whoever supports Brihaspati, honoring him and nourishing him, receives his ancient blessings. In his own abode, Brihaspati dwells content, surrounded by abundant nourishment. The clans bow to him willingly, for in him priestly power shines foremost among rulers. Unopposed, he conquers and wins wealth from both foes and friends. The king who aids the priest and grants passage is protected by the gods themselves. Indra and Brihaspati, mighty ones, are again invited to drink the Soma together, delighting in the sacrifice, receiving the self-born drops, and bestowing wealth filled with heroes. Brihaspati and Indra, the worshippers pray, increase their strength, grant them your favor, accept their thoughts and wise counsel, and shatter the foes, subduing the hostile. As this most excellent light arises before all, it dispels darkness and reveals new paths. The Dawns, daughters of heaven, shine forth, making way for the people. Radiant and pure, the splendid Dawns appear, opening the gates of darkness and bringing light. Rising today, the Dawns distribute gifts generously, bestowing wealth, while those who remain unawakened linger in the shadows and the awakened move ahead. The singers wonder: which among you, O Dawns, are new or ancient? Who has come today? By whom did the Angiras, with their cows and the seven-mouthed one, gain their riches? For you, O goddesses, with horses yoked in truth, swiftly traverse all worlds, awakening the living, two-footed and four-footed, for the journey of life. Where are those ancient ones? By what deeds did the Ribhus accomplish their tasks? The Dawns move in beauty, ever bright, yet their forms are mysterious and undying. The Dawns of old are fragrant, glorious, born of truth, and in their light, the singer quickly attains wealth. Together, the Dawns move with one purpose, spreading their radiance, awakening all like streams of cows stirring forth. Like waves, they move in unison, hiding the darkness with their bright, pure forms. The worshippers call to these shining daughters of heaven, asking for wealth and offspring, and to be made lords of noble strength. With reverence, the hymn is offered to the Dawns, the sign of sacrifice, seeking renown among people, and the blessings of heaven and earth. She, the radiant daughter, rises, awakening her sister; the daughter of heaven is revealed. Like a red mare among horses, the mother of cows, rich in milk, becomes a friend to the Ashvins, O Ushas. You are indeed the friend of the Ashvins, the mother of cows, and the mistress of wealth. Wise one, who keeps away hatred and bestows fair speech, the worshippers approach you with praise. Your auspicious rays appear like streams of cows, O Ushas, opening wide the space for living. You fill the wide expanse, dispelling darkness with your light, following your own law. Your rays stretch to the sky and the beloved midspace, O Ushas, shining with bright radiance. The worshippers choose the great gift of Savitar, the wise lord, who protects the devotee by his own power. May he bring all to the days with his light. Savitar, supporter of heaven and lord of beings, dons his tawny garment and generates auspicious praise. Filling both heaven and earth, Savitar makes his glory manifest, stretching out his arms and setting the world in motion with the days. With his unerring ordinance, Savitar makes the worlds shine, protecting all creatures, steadfast in his vow as king of the great path. By his greatness, he encompasses the threefold midspace, the three regions, the three lights, ruling over three heavens, three earths, and three waters, protecting all by his power. This great-minded, all-fostering god, master of all that moves and stands still, may he grant shelter and triple protection from harm. May Savitar come with the seasons, increase the home, grant good offspring and food, quicken the people with days and nights, and bestow wealth with offspring. Thus, the god Savitar, worthy of praise, is honored by mortals at this time of day. Distributing treasures, may he grant the best wealth here, as is his custom.
