In the vastness of existence, there are powers that stand both together and apart, far and near, ever awake in their steadfast place. The sisters, as they blossom into young women, utter the names of the pairs, weaving the tapestry of creation. All these births are distinctly separated, each bearing the greatness of the gods, unwavering and unafraid. The moving and the fixed, the flying, the wandering, the diverse and the born—all are ruled by the one Lord, who governs all. From the ancient origins, ever old, I approach the middle regions, born from the great Father for the sake of us all. There, the gods, as guides, stand together on the broad path, both apart and within, marking the sacred journey. This hymn, I proclaim to heaven and earth, hoping they, with their broad wombs, may listen, and that Agni, as their tongue, may carry the words. Mitra, the sovereign, Varuṇa, the youthful Adityas, the sages, and the renowned are invoked. Savitṛ, with golden hands and a beautiful tongue, three times descends from heaven, ruling in the assembly. Among the gods, Savitṛ proclaims the hymn and grants us all-surpassing good. Tvaṣṭṛ, skillful and truth-abiding, self-praising and good-handed, may he bestow his aid upon us. Together with Pūṣan and the Ṛbhus, may joy abound as they raise the stones upright at the sacrifice. The Maruts, with chariots flashing like lightning, armed with spears, sons of heaven born of truth, tireless and mighty, are called. Sarasvatī, worthy of sacrifice, may she hear our prayers, and Dhātṛ grant us swift wealth and strong heroes. To Viṣṇu, mighty in many ways, hymns and praises are offered, as workers go to Bhaga for their share. Wide-striding, ancient in his call, Viṣṇu is untouched by the creators, the many young mothers. Indra, ruling with all powers, fills both heavens with his greatness. Destroyer of cities, slayer of Vṛtra, strong with his army, may he bring together abundant wealth for us. The Nāsatyas, my fathers and kin-inquirers, bear the beautiful name of the Aśvins, givers of riches and treasures, guarding the gifts unerringly. Great is the beautiful name of the wise ones, when the gods become all for Indra. With the Ṛbhus, the much-invoked friend, and their dear ones, may our thoughts be fashioned for success. Aryaman, Aditi, worthy of sacrifice, uphold the unbroken vows of Varuṇa. May they unite us with offspring, make our path fruitful, and grant us cattle for the journey. The messenger of the gods, born in many ways, speaks to us, all-knowing and sinless. May earth, heaven, and the waters hear us, as well as the sun with the stars and the broad midspace. May the mighty mountains, steadfast and rejoicing in nourishment, hear us. May Aditi with the Ādityas listen, and the Maruts grant us auspicious protection. May the path to our fathers always be easy, the gods moisten the plants with honey, and Bhaga remain steadfast in friendship. May I reach the dwelling of the generous one unharmed. Agni, swift and shining with our offerings, grant us renown and conquer our foes in every contest. Shine upon us with all good favor. When the dawns, earlier than the rest, shine forth, the great and imperishable mark of the cow is born. The mighty one approaches, following the ordinances of the gods, bearing the great, single lordship of the gods. Let not the gods nor the ancient fathers withdraw from us, O Agni, who knows the path. The sign resides within the two ancient abodes. My desires wander in many places, seeking to attain the ancient things with peace. With Agni kindled, let us speak rightly, honoring the great, single lordship of the gods. The same king, apportioned, lies in many places, joined to the sleepers and following the forests. One mother bears the calf, another holds it. Some do not abandon the later from the former; suddenly, among the young ones, they are born within. The pregnant ones bear, the silent one does not speak. They lie beyond, and here the two-mothered one moves bound; the single calf wanders. These are the ordinances of Mitra and Varuṇa. The two-mothered Hotar, sovereign in the assemblies, moves forward while the base remains. The lovely ones bear lovely speech. Like a hero fighting at the end, he sees all that is set before him. Hidden within the cow, he moves within the mind. The gray messenger moves within, trembling, bearing forms and radiance, looking upon us from all sides. Viṣṇu, the guardian, protects the highest path, upholding the beloved, immortal abodes. Agni knows all the worlds. Diverse, twin forms are fashioned; one shines bright, the other is dark. Tawny and ruddy, the two sisters sit together where the mother and daughter, both cows, yield their milk abundantly, sitting within the seat of truth. The cow, having mounted, places her calf in another; she swells with the milk of truth and flows forth. With her foot, she wears many forms, standing upright and moving with three supports. In the abode of truth, I move, knowing. As if a foot were set within, wondrously, between them one is hidden, one manifest. The path is straight, but one strays. Let the cows, ever-yielding, milk for us, abundant, unwearied, never failing, ever new, ever young. When the bull bellows among the others, he places his seed in another herd, lord of the nights, dispenser, king. Let us proclaim the heroic nobility, the horse-wealth of the people, and the wisdom known by the gods. Sixteen yoked, five by five, draw it. Tvaṣṭṛ and Savitṛ, of manifold forms, nourish the creatures and generate them in many ways. All these worlds belong to them. The great earth, even and well-ordered, and the broad sky are established by their wealth. The heroic one, seeking riches, is heard. This earth, all-supporting, abides for us like a king who is a friend to all, like heroes sitting in the forecourt, in shelter. The plants, the waters, the earth, O Indra, bear wealth for you. May we be your friends, sharing in your gifts. Neither the cunning nor the wise diminish the first, steadfast ordinances of the gods. The two worlds, with their known boundaries, and the firm-standing mountains, have not declined. Six bearers, one moves alone, upholding the highest order; the cows have come near. Three great ones stand above, steadfast; two are hidden in secret, one is seen. Thus, through all these mysteries and manifestations, shines the great, single lordship of the gods, ever ancient, ever new, ever present in all things.
