Inspired by the exhilarating Soma, our songs rose in devotion, calling mighty Indra to come and partake of the sacred drink. With heartfelt hymns, we invited him to join us, that he might be gladdened by our praises as he drank the Soma. Indra, the hundred-powered, possessor of swift horses, the Somas are pressed and ready—receive them into your belly, O Lord. For we know you as the bold winner of wealth, wise and victorious in contests; it is for your favor that we earnestly seek. Come, Indra, and drink this Soma of ours, rich in cows and barley, and approach with your powerful bulls to the pressed juice. In your own dwelling, we urge Soma for you; may it bring joy to your heart. As the Kuśikas of old, we invoke you again for the drinking of the pressed Soma, seeking your help as our ancestors did. O Indra, yoked to your chariot, turn toward us and come to the seat we have prepared. The drink of Soma awaits you in the highest heaven; beloved friend, release yourself and approach the sacred grass, for those who bear the oblation call you now. Traverse many peoples, O noble one, and approach us with blessings and your two bay steeds, for our thoughts, shaped by praise, yearn for your friendship. Come to our growing sacrifice with your bay steeds, O god Indra, and be present. With clarified butter and heartfelt thoughts, we offer you the feast of sweetness. Your two strong, well-formed bays will bear you here, delighting in the pressing of Soma. May you, friend, listen to the praises of your companions. Will you make me, O generous and mighty Indra, a protector of the people or a king? Will you grant me the vision of a seer, one who has tasted the pressed Soma, or a share of immortal wealth? Let your great bays, yoked and swift from heaven, bring you to this shared feast, O Indra. They are the mighty ones of the bull, well-groomed and powerful. Indra, drink of the pressed Soma, strong one, brought by the swift hawk—by whose exhilaration you set the peoples in motion and broke through the enclosures. In this contest, let us call upon you, the generous one, best among men in the pursuit of prizes, fierce and ever ready to help in battle, slayer of obstacles, conqueror of wealth. Let this Soma, pressed with the bays, be for you, O delightful one. Accept it, Indra, and come with your bays; mount your golden chariot. Delighting in your bays, you make the dawn and the sun shine; wise Indra, you increase all glories. You held up the sky, golden with the bays, and the earth, shining with their color. You supported abundant food with the bays, between which the bay one moves. Born, the bay bull shines in all the realms. The bay-steeded one wields the golden weapon, the thunderbolt, shining in his arms. With your bright, bay-colored thunderbolt, Indra, you opened up the pressed Soma with the bays and stones; with the bays, you shone forth in brilliance. Come, Indra, with your delightful bays, their manes like peacock feathers. Let no one restrain you, for you are swift as an arrow flying beyond all bounds. Destroyer of Vṛtra, breaker of enclosures, opener of strongholds, born of the waters, you are the charioteer of the two bays, ever approaching, breaking even the firmest barriers. Deep as the oceans, you possess wisdom, as cows their pasture. Well-guarded, the cows seek the grass, as channels flow to the lake. Bring us abundant wealth, Indra, which none can rival; shake down the ripe fruit from the tree, as one gathers the harvest, O bringer of riches. Self-powered and radiant, your guidance is self-chosen, your fame surpasses all. Thus grown in strength and much praised, become for us the most renowned. You are the mighty, youthful, and ancient Bull, self-ruler, fierce and unaging, wielder of the thunderbolt—Indra, whose deeds are renowned and great. Great are your manly powers, seeker of wealth, fierce and prevailing over others; you alone are king of all the world, governing the peoples by battle and by dwelling. By your measure you have expanded, shining forth; with the gods, you are unsurpassed on every side. By your might, Indra, you stretched out the sky and earth, and from the vast midspace you drew forth strength. Wide, deep, mighty by birth, fierce and all-illuminating, protector of thoughts—Indra, the pressed Somas, like rivers, flow to you in the highest heaven. That Soma, which earth and heaven bear for you as a mother bears her child, is poured out and purified for you by the priests, O Bull, for you to drink. With the Maruts, O Indra, Bull for battle, drink the Soma for exhilaration as men do. Pour the wave of honey into your belly; you are king of the pressed offerings in the highest heaven. Together with the Maruts, your troop, O slayer of Vṛtra, heroic and wise, drink the Soma; strike down the foes, drive away hostilities, and make us fearless on every side. With the seasons, O Indra, guardian of order, drink the Soma with the gods, your friends, pressed for us. The Maruts who aided you, who carried you, who gave you strength for slaying Vṛtra—those who increased you in the slaying of Ahi, in the Shambara, in the desire for cows—those priests who now honor you: drink Soma, Indra, with the Maruts as your troop. Him with the Maruts, the ever-growing Bull, cloud-cutter, divine ruler, Indra, mighty for all help and new aid, fierce, strong companion—here let us invoke. Straightaway, newly born, the Bull, the young one, longed to partake of the pressed Soma. Drink, O noble one, as you desire, as you first drank the exhilarating juice. On the very day of your birth, at your will, you drank the sweet essence on the mountain. Your mother, the woman, your begetter, poured it for you at the house of your great father in the beginning. Approaching his mother, he sought food; he saw the sharp Soma pressed out. Driving away the others, the wise one moved about, accomplishing great and manifold deeds. Fierce, strong, irresistible in might, he shaped his body as he wished, surpassing Tvaṣṭṛ by birth, and drank the Soma in the gathered companies. May we call upon generous Indra in this contest, foremost among men for the prize. May the fierce one, listening to our call for help in battles, slayer of Vṛtras and winner of wealth, come to us.
