In the vast expanse of the cosmos, Varuṇa, the divine overseer, adorned in a radiant golden mantle and a shining robe, stands vigilant, his watchful eyes surveying all that exists. His spies, ever attentive, encircle the realms, ensuring that no deceitful man or hostile force dares to challenge his authority. It is said that those who have achieved unparalleled fame among mortals may find that glory reflected within themselves, a testament to their connection with the divine. As thoughts arise, they flow forth like cows returning to their pastures, yearning for the wisdom of the far-seeing Varuṇa. In this sacred moment, a voice calls out, inviting a dialogue filled with sweetness and reverence, akin to a priest addressing a beloved deity. The seeker expresses a longing to behold the all-seeing Varuṇa, envisioning him upon his chariot, ready to receive heartfelt songs of devotion. “O Varuṇa,” the plea resonates, “hear my call and grant me your grace today, for I turn to you in my time of need.” The wise lord, who governs both heaven and earth, listens attentively to the journey of those who seek his guidance. The seeker requests the release of the highest and middle bonds, longing for the lowest to endure throughout life. In the presence of the Lord of strength, garments are prepared, and offerings are made in reverence. The worthy Hotar, youthful and vibrant, takes his place, ready to chant hymns that rise like incense to the heavens. Agni, the divine fire, is invoked with heavenly speech, as the father offers for the son, and the friend honors the bond of friendship. Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman, the righteous ones, are invited to sit upon the sacred grass, to share in the joy of ancient rituals and the songs that echo through time. With each offering, the worshippers honor their Agnis, acknowledging the divine presence that sustains them. They seek mutual praise among both immortals and mortals, offering sacrifices that resonate with strength and glory. Like a powerful horse, they extol Agni, sovereign among sacrifices, who is gracious and generous, protecting them from harm and evil, both near and far. This new song, a declaration of devotion, is lifted among the gods as a testament of support. Agni, the radiant divider of the river's waves, flows swiftly to those who worship him. He protects the valiant in battle, ensuring that those he favors attain lasting riches. No one can withstand the approach of such a champion, for the prize of fame is destined for the worthy. As the seeker calls upon the great and mighty, he invokes the divine, asking for wisdom and discernment. He pays homage to the young and the old, the great and the small, acknowledging that all gods deserve reverence. The worshippers plead that their praises be preserved, that they may continue to honor the divine. In the heart of the ritual, the mortar stands firm, ready for pressing, echoing the sounds of creation. Indra, the mighty, is aware of the clattering that accompanies the preparation of offerings. In homes where the mortar is harnessed, its voice rings out like a victorious drum, summoning the prize-seekers who are vibrant and eager, akin to horses devouring fodder. Today, the trees, strong and steadfast, prepare the honeyed Soma, a sacred offering for Indra to drink. The collective spirit of devotion rises, a harmonious blend of voices and intentions, as the worshippers unite in their quest for divine blessings and the fulfillment of their hearts' desires.
