Indra, radiant and resplendent, brought forth the days, wielding his mighty weapons to conquer hostile armies and dispel the forces of darkness. For Manu, the mighty ancestor, Indra revealed the sacred sign and uncovered the light that shone forth in the heat of great battle. Entering into the praises and offerings of his devotees, Indra established many heroic deeds for humankind, awakening noble thoughts in the hearts of worshippers and bestowing upon them a radiant and pure form. The exploits of mighty Indra are many and splendid; his works are abundant and wondrous. With irresistible force, he crushed the wicked, subduing tricksters and enemies with his power. In the tumult of battle, Indra, by his greatness, carved a path for the gods, standing as the true lord and protector of people. In the house of Vivasvat, the sages gather to praise his deeds with hymns and songs. Indra, the mighty companion in strength and lord of light, has subdued both earth and heavens, and the wise and inspired rejoice in him. He has tamed the waters and the sun, subdued the cow—the source of delight—and claimed golden wealth. After vanquishing his enemies, he brought forth the noble form. Indra stirred the plants and the days, set the trees and the midspace in motion. He broke through barriers and released the power of speech, becoming the restrainer of the arrogant. Thus, let us call upon generous Indra, the foremost among men in battle, that he may listen to our pleas, strike down our foes, and win for us the wealth we seek. Now, the horses are yoked to the chariot, standing ready. They come swift as the wind, drawing near to the place of sacrifice. Indra, drink the pressed Soma offered with the cry of ‘svaha’ for our delight. We harness the swift horses for the much-invoked one; let them run, gathering from all sides, and bring Indra to this sacred rite. Lead the strong, radiant horses here, for you, mighty Indra, are self-sustaining. Let the red steeds graze and be released, for each day their actions are ever the same. With prayer, we yoke your prayer-guided horses, companions at the shared feast. Mount your firm, pleasant chariot, O knowing and wise Indra, and come to the Soma. Let not your strong, broad-backed horses be held back by other worshippers. Come swiftly, and may we always delight you with the pressed Somas. This Soma is for you; come near, Indra, most knowing, with a good mind, and drink. Seated on the sacred grass, receive this pressed juice into yourself. The sacred grass is spread for you, the Soma is pressed, and the offerings are prepared for you and your horses. To you, mighty and many-formed, accompanied by the Maruts, these oblations are given. O men, for your sake the waters have approached the mountains; with Indra, they have made the honeyed milk with cows. With your coming, O lofty one, guard us graciously, knowing and wise, following the proper paths. Those who, O Indra, Maruts, and Soma, have strengthened you and become your companions—together with them, drink this Soma with Agni’s tongue, O Indra. Drink with delight the pressed Soma, or drink it with Agni’s tongue, O worthy of worship; or accept the sacrifice from the hands of the priest, O mighty one, or from the hotar, enjoy the offerings of the ritual. Let us call upon Indra, the generous, in this contest, the best among men in winning prizes—the mighty one who listens for help in battles, who slays the foes and conquers wealth. Set forth this offering for gain, always striving with messengers; Indra has grown strong with every pressing, his acts of greatness making him renowned. For Indra, the Soma juices are pressed from the sky, with which the mighty ones ascend. As they are poured out, seize them, Indra, and drink the Soma stirred by the bull. Drink and grow, for your sake these Somas are pressed, O Indra; these are the first of all. As you drank the Somas before, so drink today the newest, O praised one. The great, measureless Indra, in the gathering, rules with fierce might and bold strength; not even the earth could contain him when the Somas delighted the horse-loving one. The great and fierce one has grown for heroism, the bull has accomplished with wisdom; Indra, the giver of wealth, from whom cows are born and whose gifts are abundant and ancient. When the rivers flow forth, they go to the ocean as if on a chariot; from this, Indra is greater than the assembly, for when Soma fills, the pressed juice nourishes. The rivers, moving together with the ocean, bring the well-pressed Soma to Indra; the Soma is milked by the hands of the elephants, purified by honey and filtered through sieves. Like lakes, the vessels hold the Soma, and many gatherings are spread forth. When Indra first divided the food, he slew the serpent and chose the Soma. Bring the Soma here, let nothing be left behind, for we know you, Indra, as the lord of wealth among the rich. O horse-loving Indra, send us that mighty gift which is yours. Send to us, O generous, victorious Indra, the abundant wealth of all kinds; grant us a hundred autumns to live, grant us heroes, O Indra, with the sacred tuft. Let us call upon Indra, the generous, in this contest, the foremost among men in winning prizes—the mighty one who listens for help in battles, who slays the foes and conquers wealth. For the slaying of the foe and the overcoming in battle, Indra, we set you in motion. Let your mind and sight be turned toward us, O Indra of a hundred powers; let our prayers make you favorable. We invoke all your names, O Indra of a hundred powers, with every hymn, for overcoming the adversary. With your hundred powers, O much-praised one, we magnify you, Indra, supporter of the peoples. I call upon Indra, much-invoked, to slay Vṛtra and gain strength in battles. Be victorious in contests, O hundred-powered one; we seek you, Indra, to slay the Vṛtra. In glories, in the rush of battle, in contests for prizes and for fame, O Indra, be present in our struggles. Protect the most invigorating, glorious Soma for our help, O Indra, hundred-powered, ever-watchful. The powers which are yours among the five peoples, O Indra, those I choose for you. Indra, gain great fame, establish unconquerable glory; with your strength, overcome your foes.
