Let us remember and proclaim the heroic deeds of Indra, the mighty god whose actions must never be forgotten. It was he who, with his thunderbolt, split open the serpent that encircled and held back the waters. At his strike, the rivers, long yearning to flow, rushed forward in freedom. O singer, let your words of praise not be in vain, for your hymns have echoed through countless generations. Accept our song, O poet, and may your favor never be turned away from us by any strength. Listen, O rivers, to Kārava, who has journeyed from afar with his cart and chariot. Bow down and make yourselves easy to cross, sinking beneath the axles with your flowing streams. We listen to the words of Kārava, who has come from distant lands; we bow down to him, swelling with devotion as a woman to her beloved, as a maiden to her young man, always honoring him. If, guided by Indra, the Bharatas wish to cross with their cattle and their troop, then let the current, set in motion, flow forth freely. I choose for you the good favor of those worthy of sacrifice. And so the Bharatas have crossed with their cattle, receiving the rivers’ generous favor. Flow forth, O abundant rivers, granting boons, filling your channels, and go in prosperity. Let your waves rise gently, releasing all bonds, O waters. Do not, by your force, cause harm or injury; let there be no misfortune or distress. Indra, breaker of barriers, has torn open the fortress of the Dasa with his might. Compassionately granting wealth, he scattered the enemies. Guided by prayer and growing in strength, the generous one filled both heaven and earth. For your sacrifice and power, Indra, I send forth adorned praise, seeking immortality. Among human peoples, among divine hosts, and among those who came before, you are the lord. Indra chose to shatter Vritra, the destroyer, striking down the deceivers and the arrogant. He slew the obstructers hidden in the forests and revealed the cows for those who sought them. Radiant Indra brought forth the days, conquering hostile armies with his weapons. He made manifest the sign for Manu, the mighty, and found light for the great battle. Indra entered the praises and offerings, establishing many heroic deeds for men. He awakened these thoughts for the worshipper and bestowed upon them a radiant, pure form. The great deeds of mighty Indra are many and splendid, his works abundant. By force, he crushed the wicked and overcame the tricksters and hostile ones with his power. In battle, Indra made a path for the gods, the true lord and protector of people. In the house of Vivasvat, sages praise those deeds with hymns and songs. The worthy Indra, companion in strength and lord of light, has subdued both earth and heaven; the wise and inspired rejoice in him. He subdued the waters, the sun, and the cow, the giver of much enjoyment. He subdued golden wealth, and after slaying the enemies, brought forth the noble form. Indra stirred the plants and the days, stirred the trees and the midspace. He broke the barrier and released speech, restraining the arrogant. Let us call upon Indra, the generous, the best among men, in this battle for the prize. May he, fierce and listening for aid in conflicts, slay the foes and win the wealth. Stand ready, O horses, yoked to the chariot; come as the wind, bringing us near. Indra, drink the pressed Soma offered here with the cry of ‘svaha’, for our delight. I harness the swift horses to the chariot for the much-invoked one; let them run, gathering from all sides, and bring Indra to this sacrifice. Lead the strong, radiant horses here; mighty Indra is self-sustaining. Let the red steeds graze and be released; day by day, their actions are ever alike. With prayer, I yoke your prayer-guided horses, swift companions at the shared feast. Indra, mount the firm, pleasant chariot, knowing and wise, and come to the Soma. Let not your strong, broad-backed horses be held back by other worshippers. Come swiftly, and may we always bring you delight with the pressed Somas. This Soma is for you; come near, Indra, most knowing, with a good mind, and drink. In this sacrifice, seated on the sacred grass, place this pressed juice in your belly. The sacred grass is spread for you, Indra; the Soma is pressed. The offerings are prepared for you and your horses. To you, mighty, many-formed, accompanied by the Maruts, these oblations are given. O men, the waters have approached the mountains for you; with Indra, they have made the honeyed milk with cows. With his coming, O lofty one, guard us graciously, knowing and wise, following the proper paths. Indra, Maruts, and Soma, those who have strengthened you and become your companions—together with them, eager, drink this Soma with Agni’s tongue, O Indra. Indra, drink with delight the pressed Soma, or drink it with Agni’s tongue, O worthy of worship; or accept the sacrifice from the hands of the priest, O mighty one, or from the hotar, enjoy the ritual offerings. Let us call upon Indra, the generous, in this contest, the foremost among men in winning prizes; the mighty one who listens for help in battles, who slays the foes, who conquers wealth. Set forth this offering for gain, always striving with messengers; Indra has grown strong in every pressing, with acts of greatness, becoming renowned. For Indra, the Soma juices are pressed from the sky, with which the mighty ones ascend; as they are poured out, seize them, Indra, drink the Soma stirred by the bull. Drink and grow, for your sake these Somas are pressed, O Indra; these are the first, indeed. As you drank the earlier Somas, so drink today the newest, O praised one. The great, measureless one, in the gathering, rules with fierce might and bold strength; not even the earth could contain him when the Somas delighted the horse-loving one. The great, fierce one has grown for heroism; the bull has accomplished with wisdom. Indra, giver of wealth, from him cows are born, his gifts are abundant and ancient. When the rivers move forth with their flow, the waters go to the ocean as if on a chariot; from this, Indra is greater than the assembly, when Soma fills, the pressed juice nourishes. The rivers, moving together with the ocean, bring the well-pressed Soma to Indra; the Soma is milked by the hands of elephants, purified by honey and filtered through sieves. Like lakes, the vessels hold the Soma, many gatherings spread forth; when Indra first divided the food, he slew the serpent and chose the Soma. Bring it here, let nothing be left behind; for we know you, Indra, as the lord of wealth among the rich. O horse-loving Indra, send to us your mighty gift. Send to us, O generous, victorious Indra, the abundant wealth of all kinds; grant us a hundred autumns to live, grant us heroes, O Indra, with the tuft. Let us call upon Indra, the generous, in this contest, the foremost among men in winning prizes; the mighty one who listens for help in battles, who slays the foes, who conquers wealth.
