O Agni, radiant son of strength, we call upon you with reverence and hope. Protect us from folly and weakness, shield us from poverty and the snares of hatred or enmity. Be gracious, O fortunate one, and grant us wealth that overflows with children and joy, especially as we gather for the great sacrifice. Release to us abundant riches, bringing joy, fame, and lasting glory. When you are kindled, Agni, you follow the eternal laws, praised by those who worship you. With your flaming hair and the offering of clarified butter, you, pure and skillful in sacrifice, bring the gods to our ritual. As you have performed the sacred priestly office on earth and, with wisdom, in heaven, so now—accepting our offering—lead us to worship the gods, that we may cross beyond all obstacles through this sacrifice. Threefold is your life, O Jātavedas; three dawns are born for you, Agni. By these, bring us the help of the gods and be a source of blessing to your devotees. We praise you, Agni, radiant and beautiful, worthy of homage, messenger and bringer of offerings, whom the gods established as the center of immortality. Whoever before you was the best of priests, who by his own power was gracious—following his ancient law, O wise one, perform our sacrifice, and guide our ritual with divine favor. Be gracious to us, Agni, as you approach, like a friend to a friend, a good son to his father. The world is full of hostilities—burn away our foes, facing them on every side. Burn among the enemies, Agni; consume the hostile curse and the wrath of the stranger. Burn those without understanding; may your undying, tireless flames stand as our shield. With kindling wood and clarified butter, I offer the oblation for strength and power. As long as I am able, with prayer and honor, may I praise this divine thought for a hundred years. Shine forth with your flame, O son of strength, and place great glory among those who rejoice. Bring blessings to the Viśvāmitras, purifying yourself and making your body abundant. Grant us treasure, O bestower of wealth; for when you are kindled, Agni, you become the very embodiment of riches. In the house of the one who praises you, you assume all beautiful forms, O fortunate and splendid one. I choose you, Agni, as the priest for our sacrifice—wise, all-knowing, unfailing sage. Worship for us, O most worthy, and bring us wealth, strength, and generous gifts. To you, Agni, I send forth the offering, rich in ghee, seeking splendid gifts and radiant clarity. Circling to the right, most youthful one, approach with gifts, and, with the wealthy, seat the sacrifice. With your keen mind, grant us mastery over prosperity, and may we become most praised among the wealthy, surrounded by heroic abundance. For many are your faces, O Agni, which the worshippers have placed in you. Bring here the favor of the gods, youngest one, as you offer the sacrifice today. When the gods first desired sacrifice, they appointed you, Agni, as the priest. Be our protector here, and grant us fame among our people. At dawn, Agni calls to Uṣas, the Aśvins, and Dadhikrā, raising hymns at the break of day. May the radiant gods, united and eager for sacrifice, hear us. Agni, you have three swift steeds, three seats, three tongues born of truth, and three divine forms. With these, protect us so that our songs are never rejected. Agni, Jātavedas, you possess many powers, sustaining yourself and bearing the name of immortality. The wonders placed in you by the ancient wonder-workers are gathered together at your back. Like Bhaga, you are the leader of peoples, divine guardian of order, slayer of Vritra, wise and all-knowing. Lead us, the singers, safely through all hardships. I call here Dadhikrā, Agni, the divine Dawn, Bṛhaspati, Savitar, the Aśvins, Mitra, Varuṇa, Bhaga, the Vasus, Rudras, and Ādityas. Place this sacrifice among the immortals for us, Agni; accept our offerings, Jātavedas. Seated first as priest, taste the portions of curds and clarified butter. For you, O pure one, the clarified butter flows, the portions drip with fat. In your own place, at the divine feast, grant us the best reward. For you, Agni, the portions, rich with clarified butter, are offered to the wise. You are the best sage, blazing up; be the protector of our sacrifice. The portions flow to you, unbroken, like strength—rich with fat and clarified butter. Wise and radiant, accept our offerings, O thoughtful one. The choicest fat, raised from the midst, we offer to you. The portions drip upon you, gracious one; distribute them among the gods. This is that Agni in whom Indra placed the pressed Soma, eager for victory. He is praised as Jātavedas, possessing a thousand powers, swift as a victorious horse. Your brilliance, Agni, is in the sky, on earth, in plants, and in the waters. With it, you stretch across the vast atmosphere; your radiance is fierce, your light seen by all. You seek the flood of heaven, approach the gods, lords of the altar, and reach those who shine beyond the sun as well as the waters below. The Agnis, rich in moisture and united with helpers, accept the sacrifice, free from harm, granting great blessings. Agni, grant us abundant, lasting wealth, the best reward for the one who calls upon you. May our sons be victorious and wise; may your favor always be with us. Kindled and well-prepared, Agni sits in his place—young, wise, leader of the ritual. Ever youthful, undying in the woods, Jātavedas has established immortality here. The Bhāratas have stirred up Agni, radiant and famed among the gods, divine and skilled. Look upon us, Agni, with great wealth, and be our guide through the days. Ten ancient sticks have produced you, the well-born, beloved by mothers. We praise you, divine Agni, famed among the gods, lord among peoples. I have placed you, O best, upon the earth, in the seat of Iḻā, in the bright days. Shine, O radiant Agni, in the stone, among men, in the waters, in Sarasvatī. Grant us abundant prosperity, O Agni—the best and most enduring wealth of cows—for the one who offers. May our sons and their offspring be victorious; may your favor always be with us. Overcome, Agni, the hostile armies and adversaries; be difficult to defeat, repel our enemies, and bestow brilliance on the bearer of sacrifice. You are kindled by Iḻā, the immortal officiant; accept our sacrifice, O Lord. Awakened with splendor, son of strength, invoked—here is my seat, this sacred grass, offered to you with devotion.
