Those who serve Jātavedas, the sacred Agni, with devotion and the careful kindling of fire, find themselves blessed with heroic strength and prosperity. Agni, as the unmistakable sign and heart of sacrifice, arrives adorned, accompanied by the gods and seven priests, to the altar where oblations are offered. The wise bring forth ancient, lofty speech to honor Agni, who as the priest bears radiant lights for those who seek wisdom. May our hymns fortify Agni, from whom all praise is born, so that we may attain great rewards: wealth, vision, and spiritual prize. Most fit for sacrifice, Agni worships the gods on behalf of the worshiper; as the delightful priest, he shines forth, dispelling all obstacles. O pure one, shine for us, grant radiant heroism, and be closest to the singers for our well-being. Agni is kindled by inspired and vigilant priests; he is immortal, strong, and the carrier of offerings. He is the priest, the householder, the wise one of the sacrifice, knowing the ritual for all mankind. As the immortal messenger, Agni is swift and established; he fulfills his duties with thought. With his insight, Agni perceives the purpose of the sacrifice; he is its ancient sign, knowing its meaning. Renowned as the son, Agni is the knower of all births; the gods made him the sacred fire. Unassailable, he leads the peoples, acting as priest for men, ever swift and ever new, like a chariot. Agni summons all, embodies the power of the gods, and is unwearied and widely famed. Through his vehicle, the worshiper attains the paths and the abode of the pure flame. Let us approach Agni’s well-established gifts with our thoughts, O wise ones, O knower of all births. Agni, we seek all desirable things in contests and prayers; in you, the gods have placed their trust. Now, Indra and Agni are called to the pressed Soma with songs, O lofty ones; may they drink it, guided by our devotion. Together with the singer, the conscious sacrifice advances; Indra and Agni are invited to delight in the Soma. Chosen and adorned with wisdom, they are honored by the favor of the sacrifice. Indra and Agni are called as slayers of Vritra, victorious and unconquered, bestowers of strength. The singers, skilled in praise, exalt them, seeking their favor for nourishment. Indra and Agni, with a single deed, shook ninety fortresses belonging to the Dasa women, displaying their might. Prayers approach them, traveling the paths of truth. Their mighty seats and journeys are established; their protection is well-placed. Indra and Agni adorn the shining regions of heaven in contests, and their heroic power is renowned. Again, Agni is praised with hymns upon the sacred grass; may he come with the gods and, most fit for sacrifice, sit upon the grass for us. He is supported by the two worlds, whose aids are steadfast and skillful; honored with offerings, those seeking help approach him. As leader of the priests, he advances the sacrifices; Agni is honored as the giver and desirer of wealth. May Agni grant the most pleasant protection for prosperity; from him we receive abundant wealth in heaven, on earth, and in the waters. Radiant and unique, with noble thoughts, the singers kindle Agni, the priest and lord of the people. May you, O Brahman, be the most invoked among hymns, O Agni, who delights the Maruts and gives a thousand gifts. Grant us wealth in thousands, with offspring and nourishment; O shining Agni, bestow the highest, unassailable heroic strength. The gracious Hotar, true in sacrifice and skilled in poetry, is Agni—the creator, with a chariot flashing like lightning, son of strength, with fiery hair, who spreads his energy across the earth. Words of praise are offered to him; knowing, he leads the wise and seats them in the midst, upon the sacred grass, for worship. Let the dawns, rich in prizes, hasten to Agni along the paths of the wind. When they bring the ancient offering, like a loving wife, they stand together in the home. Mitra and Varuna, mighty ones, and all the Maruts offer their favor to Agni. With his flame, son of strength, Agni stands forth, spreading over the lands as the sun spreads among men. Today, the worshipers have fulfilled Agni’s desire, approaching with uplifted hands and reverence. With devoted minds, they worship the gods, letting the inspired priest, Agni, carry their thoughts. From Agni, son of strength, many gifts come; the blessings of the god and the prizes. Grant us wealth in thousands, Agni, with truthful speech and without harm. To Agni, the wise one, mortals perform rites with skill and insight. He is aware of all noble gifts, and all this, immortal one, is his to enjoy. Shining with broad energy, Agni drives away enemies, demons, and disease. May we always remain in the great protection of Agni, the gracious guide.
