Indra, the mighty and real, is the champion who grants victory and prizes even to the weak, whether the Soma is pressed or cooked. His favor makes his devotees dear and victorious, empowering them to speak with strength in the assembly. In the beginning, the season, regarded as the mother, gave birth to him. From her waters, he swiftly entered and grew within her. At his birth, nourishing milk was produced—the first and most excellent portion of the sap. These nourishing streams flow together, bearing milk for all beings to enjoy, treading the same path and offering sustenance to humanity. The one who first made these streams is truly worthy of praise. As the streams flow, one gives, measuring according to his nature, while another departs alone. All endure the actions of the one who first set them in motion, and he alone deserves our praise. These streams distribute sustenance among their offspring, like wealth spreading from a mountaintop. With sharp teeth, they consume the father’s food, yet it is he who fashioned them first who is ever worthy of our hymns. He who made the earth visible and the sky above, who cleared the paths and slew the serpent, is the one to whom hymns and offerings are rightly given. The gods themselves created him, the worthy one. He gives food and growth, drawing sweet moisture from both the dry and the wet. He placed the treasure for the shining one and rules as the sole sovereign over all—he is worthy of praise. He upholds the blossoming and the flowing by his law, sustaining gifts and standing unmatched, radiant, and vast throughout the heavens and all around. He brings down the arrogant and the hostile, leads the strong and the generous, and his mouth is filled with nourishing strength—he is ever deserving of our highest praise. Whether a hundred or ten serve at once, when he urges them on, he binds the enemies for the fearful and becomes renowned for his protection. All powers followed his manliness, granting him wealth and bestowing riches upon the accomplished. He supported six, established five, and surpassed all others—he is ever worthy of praise. O Indra, your heroic deeds are well spoken. By your single resolve, you attain wealth. The strength of the ever-firm, mighty one—all that you have done is worthy of praise. You make the swift and the strong pass over, grant hearing to Turvīta and Vayya, raise up the lowly, turn back the distant, and even make the blind hear. Such are your praiseworthy acts. For us, O generous one, establish the gift of giving. Much of your wealth is fit for us. Indra, whatever splendid fame exists in the heavens, let us proclaim it greatly in the assembly, O mighty ones. O priests, bring Soma for Indra, pour the intoxicating drink with measured care, for the hero desires the feast in his dwelling. Offer it to the mighty one, for he wishes it. He who held back the waters and slew Vritra as one fells a tree—bring this offering as he desires; Indra deserves the drink. He who slew Dṛbhika, released the cows, and broke open Vala for you—offer Soma to Indra, like the wind in the midspace, adorned with garments. He who slew Uraṇa, struck down ninety-nine arms, and subdued Arbuda below—offer Soma to Indra for his delight. He who slew Svaśna and destroyed Śuṣṇa, Aśuṣa, and Vyaṃsa, who struck down Pipru, Namuci, and Rudhikrā—offer the intoxicating drink to Indra. He who broke a hundred cities of Śambara as one splits stones, who destroyed a hundred and a thousand of Varchin—offer Soma to him. He who seized a hundred and a thousand in the lap of the earth, who struck down and covered the warriors of Kutsa, Ayu, and Atithigva—offer Soma to him. When men, longing, perform the ritual, do it for Indra; offer Soma, purified by your hands, for the renowned Indra. Prepare the ritual for him; raise up the wood purified in the forest; offer the exhilarating Soma to Indra, who delights in the drink. As you fill the generous Indra with the milk of the cow and with Soma, know his quiet presence here—he who gives and is ever eager for sacrifice. He is lord of heavenly wealth, king of earth and land-born riches—fill him, the mighty Indra, with Soma; may this be your accomplishment. O Lord, grant us wealth for giving; establish your abundance, for your generosity is great. Indra, whatever splendid fame extends through the days, may we proclaim it greatly in the assembly, strong in men. Now, let me declare the great and true deeds of this mighty one, the truthful acts of the truthful. At the Trikadruka presses, he drank the Soma, and in its exhilaration, Indra slew the serpent. With his might, he propped up the sky, filled the two worlds, expanded the midspace, and sustained and spread the earth—by the exhilaration of Soma, Indra accomplished these things. Like a house, he measured out the eastern spaces with his powers; with the thunderbolt, he cut channels for the rivers, releasing them to flow freely on long paths—again, by the exhilaration of Soma. Moving about, he overcame obstacles, prepared all weapons in the kindled fire, and sent forth cows and horses with chariots. He shook the vast earth with his might, making it pleasant; he led the unsatisfied to well-being. They stood forth for the generous one, eager for wealth. With his strength, he stirred the Sindhu river, crushed the dawns with his thunderbolt, and divided the swift ones with his speed. He revealed the hidden waters, appeared and stood forth, turned back the enemy, stood firm, and looked upon the foe. He split the enclosure with the Angiras, opening the fastnesses of the mountain and breaking artificial barriers. With a dream, he approached and destroyed Cumuri and Dhuni; he slew the Dasyu and overcame fear, so that even the trembling one found gold—by the exhilaration of Soma, Indra accomplished all these things. Now, O Indra, let your generous gift be granted to your worshippers; let your reward be milked for us. Teach your praisers; let fortune come to us, that we may speak greatly in the assembly, strong in men. I call for the highest praise for the best of the true, as one offers fuel to the fire in sacrifice. We invoke Indra, unconquered, invigorating, ever youthful, for help. From mighty Indra, nothing is lacking; all powers are gathered in him. In his belly is Soma, in his body strength and greatness, in his hand the thunderbolt, and in his head wisdom. O Indra, your strength is unsurpassed by earths, your chariot unmatched by oceans or mountains, and none can reach your thunderbolt when you speed forth with your swift horses. All the worshipful and mighty ones bring their power to you, the Bull, who is to be praised. As a Bull, accept the oblation, most discerning, and drink the Soma with the radiance of a bull.
