When the radiant rays of mighty Agni spread in all directions, we pray that he drives away our burning sins. For Agni is all-faced, seeing everywhere and encompassing all things; to him we turn, asking again and again that he dispel the fires of our wrongdoing. With his all-encompassing gaze, may he carry us safely across those who hate us, as a boat carries one over troubled waters, removing our sins. Let him ferry us to well-being, just as a boat crosses a river, and let him keep us free from the consuming heat of our misdeeds. May we find ourselves in the good favor of Vaiśvānara, Agni as king, the radiant glory of all beings. Born here, Vaiśvānara beholds the whole world and strives alongside the sun. He is established in the sky, present on earth, and has entered into all plants. Placed by force and by will, Vaiśvānara—Agni—may he guard us from harm both day and night. O Vaiśvānara, may your truth be with us. May generous souls join their wealth to ours, and may Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven do us no harm. To Jātavedas, the all-knowing Agni, we will press the Soma, for he burns away all hostility. May he carry us across all hardships, as a boat over the river, removing our misfortunes. He who is the bull among the mighty, dwelling with the strong, sovereign of the vast heaven and earth—Indra—may he, accompanied by the Maruts, be invoked by us in battles, steadfast in truth. His might is unconquered, like the course of the sun; in every conflict he is the slayer of Vṛtra, most vigorous with his own companions. May Indra and the Maruts be our aid. For him, the paths flow like heavenly streams, strengthened by his power. He crushes all haters, unconquered in his manliness. Among the Angirases, he is the foremost, the bull among bulls, the friend among friends, the singer among singers, the eldest in wisdom and ways—may Indra and the Maruts be our support. With his sons, with the Rudras, with the Ṛbhus, Indra is victorious over enemies. With his close companions, he wins lasting fame. In contests, he performs mighty deeds, winning the sun for his people. In assembly, may this much-invoked lord strike down our foes—may Indra and the Maruts be our defenders. To him, helpers rally in battle for the hero’s prize; those who dwell in safety make their offerings to him. He alone is the lord of all action—may Indra and the Maruts be our strength. Men seek him for power in festivals, for help and wealth; even in darkness, he knows the light of thought. He guides with his left hand, restrains the bold, and gathers deeds with his right. Among singers, he is the winner of wealth. He is the victor with hosts and chariots, renowned among all peoples. By his manliness, he overcomes all curses. Whether with kinsmen or with strangers, whenever he joins the battle, may Indra and the Maruts protect us and our descendants. He who bears the thunderbolt, destroyer of foes, formidable and mighty, of a thousandfold insight and a hundredfold aid—like a fierce one with strength—may Indra and the Maruts be our protectors. His thunderbolt roars, raining down in battle like the mighty voice of the sky; to him treasures and riches flow. His immeasurable power and praise are ever encompassed by heaven and earth; he is gladdened by our offerings. None—neither gods, mortals, nor even the waters—can reach the end of his might. With his force, he stretches earth and sky. Bright, tawny, and adorned, Indra delights, yoked to the wealth of Ṛjrāśva, bearing a strong chariot with stallions. He is gracious and mindful among the tribes. This praise is uttered for Indra the strong, celebrated with the song of Vārṣāgira: Ṛjrāśva with his companions, Ambarīṣa, Sahadeva, Bhayamāna—the generous ones—honor him. O much-invoked one, having slain the Dasyus and Śimyus with your companions, you have made the earth peaceful. With your shining friends, you have secured the field, the sun, and the waters. May Indra be our advocate in all things, so we may win the prize unharmed. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, the river, earth, and sky do us no harm. Let us raise our voices to the gladdened father, who, with Ṛjiśvan, slew the black-wombed one. We call the mighty Indra, thunderbolt in hand and accompanied by the Maruts, for friendship. He who joyfully slew Vyamsa, destroyed Śambara, and felled Pipru the lawless; Indra, who cast down Śuṣṇa the arid—we call him, with the Maruts, for friendship. His great manliness is the sky and earth; his command is Varuṇa’s, his is the sun. The rivers follow his law. Indra, lord of horses and cattle, generous and swift in action, firm in deed, slayer even of the wealthy who do not give—him we call, with the Maruts, for friendship. He is lord of all that moves and breathes, who first found the cows for the priest, who cast down the Dasyus and the lawless. Indra is invoked by the brave and the fearful, by the swift and those who seek victory. All beings have joined themselves to him. Wise in the ways of the Rudras, he spreads wide the generations with them—Indra, praised by thought, famed among all, we call with the Maruts for friendship. Whether you, Marut-accompanied one, rejoice in the highest seat or the lower assembly, from there come to our sacrifice. For you, O true-giver, we have prepared the offering. For you, O Indra, we have pressed the Soma; for you, leader of prayers, we have made ready the sacrifice. With your troop, together with the Maruts, rejoice on the sacred grass. Rejoice, Indra, with your bays; expand your cheeks and let the streams flow forth. Let your fine-cheeked steeds bring you here; graciously accept our offerings. May we, with Indra, win strength as guardians of the Marut-praised assembly. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, the River, Earth, and Heaven do us no harm. I bring forth this thought for you, O mighty one, for the great praise of your greatness, inspired by Dhiṣaṇā. In festival and striving, the gods have found Indra, strong in might, to be victorious. The seven rivers bear his fame; heaven and earth display his wondrous form. For us, the sun and moon look on with favor. O Indra, move faithfully among those who act with devotion.
