Mātariśvan, generous and wise, discovered the path for his children, guiding them as a protector of all peoples and as the very creator of heaven and earth. The gods, recognizing his greatness, established Agni—the sacred fire—as the upholder of wealth and prosperity. Night and dawn, adorned in their radiant hues, together nurture this single divine child, Agni. Within the golden realms of heaven and earth, Agni shines forth, his brilliance upheld by the gods as the giver of abundance. Agni stands as the very foundation of riches, the meeting point of all treasures, the sacred mark of sacrifice, and the fulfiller of noble thoughts. He is the guardian of immortality, ever upheld by the gods as the bringer of wealth. Through ages past and present, Agni has been the dwelling place of prosperity, the guardian of all that exists and all that is to come, sustaining the earth’s bounty and abundance. O Agni, you are the bestower of wealth, the generous giver to the mighty and the humble alike. May all praise you, O giver of riches; grant us heroic sustenance and bestow upon us long life. As you grow ever brighter with our offerings, shining pure and radiant for the sake of our renown, may the great gods—Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, the River Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven—keep us from harm. Agni, drive away our burning sins; consume our poverty and all that afflicts us. In our worship, may we be blessed with fertile fields, good paths, and wealth. When you, the most generous, grant your blessings to us and to our leaders, drive away our burning sins. As your radiant lords are born, may we be born anew with you, free from all sin. When your rays, O mighty Agni, stream forth in all directions, may you remove every trace of our burning sins. For you, O Agni, are all-seeing, encompassing everything in your gaze—drive away our sins. With your all-encompassing vision, carry us safely across the hatred and enmity of others, as a boat carries one across a river. May you bring us to well-being, ferrying us beyond all dangers and afflictions. May we always remain in the good favor of Vaiśvānara, the king and glory of all beings. Born here, he beholds the entire world and strives alongside the sun. Vaiśvānara is established in the sky, Agni is set upon the earth, and his presence fills all plants. Placed with power, Vaiśvānara, Agni, guards us from harm by day and by night. May the truth of Vaiśvānara be ours; may generous ones share their wealth with us; may Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven protect us always. To Jātavedas, the all-knowing fire, we offer the sacred Soma, that he may burn away our enemies and carry us safely through all hardships, as a boat crosses the river, removing all misfortunes. Now, let us turn our praise to Indra, the mighty bull among the strong, who abides with the powerful and rules over the vast heavens and earth. May Indra, accompanied by the Maruts, be invoked by us in our battles, steadfast and true. His unconquered might is like the sun’s course; he is the slayer of Vṛtra in every contest, vigorous among his companions. In every battle, he is our aid, for the paths flow before him like heavenly streams, strengthened by his power. He crushes all haters, unconquered in his manliness. Indra is the foremost among the Angirases, the bull among bulls, the friend among friends, the singer among singers, and the eldest in wisdom. With his sons, the Rudras, and the Ṛbhus, he is victorious over enemies, gaining fame with his close allies. In contests, he performs mighty deeds, winning the sun for us with our warriors. In this assembly, may the much-invoked lord strike down our foes, aided by the Maruts. To Indra, the helpers rally in battle for the hero’s prize; those who dwell in safety offer him their gifts. He alone is the master of all action. Men seek him for strength in festivals, for aid and for wealth. Even in darkness, Indra discerns the light of thought. He guides with his left hand, restrains the bold, and gathers deeds with his right; even among the singers, he is the winner of wealth. Indra is victorious with hosts and chariots, renowned among all peoples. With his manliness, he overcomes curses and adversities. Whether with kinsmen or strangers, when he joins us in battle, may he be our protector, ensuring the well-being of our offspring and descendants. Bearing the thunderbolt, destroyer of foes, formidable and mighty, Indra brings a thousandfold insight and a hundredfold aid, fierce in his strength. When his thunderbolt roars, it rains down force in battle like the resounding voice of the sky, full of might. To him come treasures and riches. His immeasurable power and praise are embraced by both worlds; he is ever gladdened by our offerings. Neither gods nor mortals, nor even the waters, have reached the end of his strength. With his force, he stretches earth and sky. Indra, bright and tawny, delights in the wealth of Ṛjrāśva, bearing his strong chariot with swift stallions, gracious among the tribes of the Nāhus. This praise is sung for you, O Indra the strong, celebrated with the song of Vārṣāgira: Ṛjrāśva and his companions, Ambarīṣa, Sahadeva, and Bhayamāna, the generous ones, all honor your bounty. O much-invoked one, you have slain the Dasyus and Śimyus with your companions, making the earth peaceful, O mighty one. With your shining friends, you have secured the fields, the sun, and the waters, O strong-armed one. May Indra be our advocate in all things; may we win the prize unharmed. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, the river, the earth, and the sky shield us from harm. Let us sing to the gladdened father, who, with Ṛjiśvan, slew the black-wombed foe. We call upon the mighty one, thunderbolt in hand, accompanied by the Maruts, for friendship. Indra, who joyfully slew Vyamsa, who killed Śambara, who destroyed the lawless Pipru, and who cast down the arid Śuṣṇa, we invoke for friendship, accompanied by the Maruts. His greatness encompasses sky and earth; his command is Varuṇa’s, his is the sun. Indra’s law even the rivers follow. To him, accompanied by the Maruts, we call for friendship and protection.
