At the mighty resounding of Agni, even the birds are filled with awe and scatter, and the drops of dew flee from his pasture. The path is made smooth and easy for his chariots, and so, with reverence, we pray: may we always be safe in the friendship of Agni. We offer these prayers for the favor of Mitra and Varuṇa, and we call upon the wondrous protection of the Maruts to come to us. O Agni, be gracious; may the minds of the gods turn kindly toward us. In your friendship, may we know no harm. Among the gods, you, Agni, are the most wondrous friend, the treasure above all treasures, shining beautifully in the sacrifice. May we dwell always in your generous shelter, unharmed and at peace in your company. When you are kindled in your own house, summoned by Soma, O most gracious Agni, you bestow blessings, wealth, and treasure upon your worshippers. May we never suffer misfortune in your friendship. To whomever you, O giver of good wealth, grant your favor, may he be sinless and protected by Aditi, the all-encompassing mother. Whom you empower with your gracious strength, may that one be blessed with offspring and riches. Therefore, Agni, knower of auspicious fortune, extend our lives here. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, the river, the earth, and the sky watch over us and cause us no harm. Two forms move steadily toward the light—each brings the calf to its mother. In one is the tawny, self-moving one; in the other, the bright and radiant is seen. Ten tireless maidens have borne this embryo of Tvaṣṭṛ, the divine craftsman. With sharp front, shining forth, renowned among people, they lead him around. He is adorned by three births: one in the ocean, one in the sky, and one in the waters. He follows the eastern direction of earthly things, ruling over the seasons and setting them in order. Who, indeed, has understood this secret? The calf is born to the mothers by their own power. The embryo of many waters, the great sage, moves freely among them by his own law. When he manifests, he grows lovely among them, upright among the crooked, glorious in their midst. At his birth, both of Tvaṣṭṛ’s wives tremble; yet, facing him, they welcome the lion. Both good mothers, cows and heifers, come together to greet him. He becomes the lord of powers, approached by offerings from the right. He rises, like Savitar, with both arms extended, striving fiercely, coloring the two worlds. Ascending and shining, he moves among us, leaving behind the garments of his mothers. He creates a splendid form above, mingling in the abode with cows and waters. The sage, with his wisdom, purifies the foundation, and that intelligence becomes the divine assembly. Wide is your domain, Agni, encompassing the radiant dwelling of the mighty. Kindled by all, with your own glories, protect us with unfailing guardianship. You make a path for the stream across the desert, striking the earth with shining waves. You hold all treasures within, moving among the waters and their sources. So, Agni, growing with our offerings, radiant and pure, shine forth for fame. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven never harm us. You are ancient and ever-new, Agni; by your might, you uphold all wisdom. The waters, Mitra, and Dhiṣaṇā support you, the giver of wealth. With the ancient invocation of wisdom, you generated the offspring of men. With the vision of Vivasvat, the gods uphold you, Agni, giver of wealth. You are worshipped as the foremost in sacrifice, called by the people, straight-moving, the son of strength, the generous bearer. The gods uphold you, Agni, giver of wealth. Mātariśvan, rich in gifts, found the path for his offspring. As guardian of the peoples, creator of heaven and earth, the gods uphold you, Agni, giver of wealth. Night and dawn, with their colors, nurture the single child together. Heaven and earth, shining gold within, the gods uphold you, Agni, giver of wealth. You are the foundation of riches, the meeting place of treasures, the sign of sacrifice, the fulfiller of thought. Guarding immortality, the gods uphold you, Agni, giver of wealth. Now and before, you are the dwelling of riches, of the born and the being born, of the earth. Guardian of the existing and the abundant, the gods uphold you, Agni, giver of wealth. Giver of wealth, bestower of riches to the mighty, let all praise you. Giver of wealth, grant us heroic food and bestow long life. So, Agni, growing with our offerings, radiant and pure, shine forth for fame. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven not harm us. Drive away our burning sin, Agni; burn away our poverty. With good fields, good paths, and wealth, we worship you—drive away our burning sin. When you, most generous, grant to us and our lords, drive away our burning sin. When your lords are born, may we be born with you; drive away our burning sin. When your rays go forth in all directions, mighty Agni, may you drive away our burning sin. You are all-faced, Agni, encompassing everything—drive away our burning sin. With your all-encompassing face, carry us across our haters as in a boat; drive away our burning sin. May you carry us to well-being, as in a boat across a river; drive away our burning sin. May we be in the good favor of Vaiśvānara, the king, the glory of all beings. Born here, he beholds all this world, striving with the sun. He is placed in the sky, Agni is placed on earth, and he has entered all plants. Vaiśvānara, Agni, established by force, may he guard us from harm by day and by night. Vaiśvānara, may your truth be with us; may generous ones join their wealth to us. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven not harm us. To Jātavedas we press Soma, who, all-knowing, burns away the hostile. May he carry us across all hardships, as a boat over the river, O Agni, removing our misfortunes. He is the bull among the mighty, dwelling with the strong, sovereign of the great heaven and earth. May Indra, accompanied by the Maruts, be invoked by us in battles, steadfast in truth. His might is unconquered, like the course of the sun; in every battle, he is the slayer of Vṛtra. Most vigorous with his own companions—may Indra, with the Maruts, be our aid.
