Hear now the thirty-first sarga in the glorious Valmiki Ramayana, Balakanda.
Then, having accomplished their purpose, Rama and Lakshmana spent that night there, the two heroes joyful and delighted in their hearts.
When the night had passed, having performed their morning rites, they approached Vishvamitra and the other sages together.
Having greeted the foremost sage, blazing like fire, the two, speaking sweetly, addressed him with supremely noble words.
O tiger among sages, here we stand as your attendants. Command us, best of sages—what shall we do?
When they had spoken thus, all the great sages, with Vishvamitra at their head, addressed Rama.
O best of men, Janaka, king of Mithila, will perform a most righteous sacrifice. There we shall go.
And you too, O tiger among men, shall go with us; there you are worthy to behold the wondrous, precious bow.
That, O best of men, was formerly given in the assembly by the gods—an immeasurably powerful and terrible bow, shining supremely at the sacrifice.
Neither gods, nor gandharvas, nor asuras, nor rākṣasas, nor any humans whatsoever are able to string it.
Desiring to test the bow’s strength, mighty princes could not succeed in stringing it.
That bow, O tiger among men, belongs to the great-souled king of Mithilā; there, O descendant of Kakutstha, you will see both the bow and the most wondrous sacrifice.
That supreme bow, O tiger among men, was requested as the fruit of the sacrifice by the king of Mithilā, ever praised by all the gods.
That bow, O Rāghava, is kept in the king’s palace as a sacred object, honored with various fragrances and incense of aguru wood.
Having spoken thus, the great sage then made ready to depart, together with the assembly of seers and the descendant of Kakutstha, after bidding farewell to the forest dwellers.
"Farewell to you all; I shall go, accomplished, from Siddhāśrama to the northern bank of the Jāhnavī, to the rocky heights of the Himālayas."
Having spoken thus, the tiger among sages, Kauśika, rich in austerity, set out toward the northern direction.
As the great sage departed, a host of followers accompanied him—a distance of a hundred carts—those devoted to the Vedas.
And the groups of deer and birds, dwellers of Siddhāśrama, followed the great-souled, austere Viśvāmitra.
Then the assembly of seers, along with the birds, turned back after traveling a long distance, as the sun was setting.
When the sun had set, they bathed and performed the fire offerings; then, led by Viśvāmitra, those of immeasurable energy sat down.
Rāma too, together with Saumitri, having duly honored the sages, sat in front of the wise Viśvāmitra.
Then Rāma, radiant and mighty, questioned the sage Viśvāmitra, the tiger among ascetics, filled with curiosity:
"Revered one, what is this land, adorned with flourishing forests? I wish to hear—may it be well with you—please tell me truly."
Thus addressed by Rāma’s words, the virtuous sage, amidst the assembly of seers, began to narrate everything about that land.
There was a great ascetic named Kuśa, born from Brahma, steadfast in his vows, knower of righteousness, and honored by the virtuous.
That great soul, endowed with immense strength, begot four worthy sons with a noble and virtuous woman from Vidarbha.
Kuśāmba, Kuśanābha, Asūrtarajas, and Vasu—radiant, energetic, and intent on upholding the duties of the warrior class—were their names.
Kuśa addressed his sons, who were righteous and truthful: 'My sons, govern well; by upholding righteousness, you will obtain great merit.'
Hearing Kuśa’s words, those four foremost among men, the noble princes, each established their own cities.
