धातूनामिव शैलेन्द्रो गुणानामाकरो महान्। तत् क्षमो न विरोधस्ते सह तेन महात्मना
Like the lord of mountains is to minerals, so is he a great source of virtues; therefore, it is not fitting for you to be in conflict with that great soul.
दुर्जयेनाप्रमेयेण रामेण रणकर्मसु। शूर वक्ष्यामि ते किंचिन्न चेच्छाम्यभ्यसूयितुम्
With Rāma, unconquerable and immeasurable in battle, O hero, I will tell you something, not wishing to offend you.
श्रूयतां क्रियतां चैव तव वक्ष्यामि यद्धितम्। यौवराज्येन सुग्रीवं तूर्णं साध्वभिषेचय
Listen and act accordingly; I will tell you what is for your good: quickly and properly anoint Sugrīva as crown prince.
विग्रहं मा कृथा वीर भ्रात्रा राजन् यवीयसा। अहं हि ते क्षमं मन्ये तेन रामेण सौहृदम्
Do not, O hero, engage in conflict with your younger brother, O king; I consider friendship with Rāma to be fitting for you.
सुग्रीवेण च सम्प्रीतिं वैरमुत्सृज्य दूरतः। लालनीयो हि ते भ्राता यवीयानेष वानरः
Make peace with Sugrīva, casting enmity far away; your younger brother, this monkey, is to be cherished by you.
तत्र वा सन्निहस्थो वा सर्वथा बन्धुरेव ते। नहि तेन समं बन्धुं भुवि पश्यामि कंचन
Whether he is here or nearby, in every way he is your kinsman; for I see no other relative on earth equal to him.
दानमानादिसत्कारैः कुरुष्व प्रत्यनन्तरम्। वैरमेतत् समुत्सृज्य तव पार्श्वे स तिष्ठतु
With gifts, respect, and proper hospitality, make him your ally at once; let this enmity be abandoned, and let him remain by your side.
सुग्रीवो विपुलग्रीवो महाबन्धुर्मतस्तव। भ्रातृसौहृदमालम्ब्य नान्या गतिरिहास्ति ते
Sugriva, broad-necked and great-hearted, is, in my view, your chief ally; relying on the bond of brotherhood, you have no other path here.
यदि ते मत्प्रियं कार्यं यदि चावैषि मां हिताम्। याच्यमानः प्रियत्वेन साधु वाक्यं कुरुष्व मे
If you wish to do what pleases me, and if you consider me well-intentioned, then, being asked out of affection, kindly follow my advice.
प्रसीद पथ्यं शृणु जल्पितं हि मे न रोषमेवानुविधातुमर्हसि। क्षमो हि ते कोशलराजसूनुना न विग्रहः शक्रसमानतेजसा
Be gracious and listen to my wholesome words; you should not simply follow anger. For you are capable, O son of the king of Kosala, and there should be no conflict with one whose brilliance equals Indra's.
तदा हि तारा हितमेव वाक्यं तं वालिनं पथ्यमिदं बभाषे। न रोचते तद् वचनं हि तस्य कालाभिपन्नस्य विनाशकाले
Then Tara, speaking only what was beneficial, addressed Vali with these wholesome words; but those words did not please him, for, overtaken by fate, he was at the time of his destruction.

Hear now the sixteenth sarga. Thus ends the sixteenth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
तामेवं ब्रुवतीं तारां ताराधिपनिभाननाम्। वाली निर्भर्त्सयामास वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्
To Tara, whose face was radiant like the moon, as she spoke thus, Vali rebuked her and spoke these words.
गर्जतोऽस्य सुसंरब्धं भ्रातुः शत्रोर्विशेषतः। मर्षयिष्यामि केनापि कारणेन वरानने
Why should I, for any reason, tolerate the furious roaring of my brother, my enemy, O beautiful-faced one?
अधर्षितानां शूराणां समरेष्वनिवर्तिनाम्। धर्षणामर्षणं भीरु मरणादतिरिच्यते
For brave warriors, unassailable and unyielding in battle, to endure insult is more bitter than death, O timid one.
सोढुं न च समर्थोऽहं युद्धकामस्य संयुगे। सुग्रीवस्य च संरम्भं हीनग्रीवस्य गर्जितम्
I am not able to endure in battle the challenge of Sugriva, who desires combat, nor the roar of that weak-necked one.
न च कार्यो विषादस्ते राघवं प्रति मत्कृते। धर्मज्ञश्च कृतज्ञश्च कथं पापं करिष्यति
You should not grieve concerning Rāghava on my account; he knows righteousness and gratitude—how could he commit a wrongful act?
निवर्तस्व सह स्त्रीभिः कथं भूयोऽनुगच्छसि। सौहृदं दर्शितं तावन्मयि भक्तिस्त्वया कृता
Turn back with the women; why do you follow me further? You have already shown your friendship and devotion to me.
प्रतियोत्स्याम्यहं गत्वा सुग्रीवं जहि सम्भ्रमम्। दर्पं चास्य विनेष्यामि न च प्राणैर्वियोक्ष्यते
I will go and confront Sugriva; cast off your anxiety. I will subdue his pride, and he will not lose his life.
अहं ह्याजिस्थितस्यास्य करिष्यामि यदीप्सितम्। वृक्षैर्मुष्टिप्रहारैश्च पीडितः प्रतियास्यति
Whatever he desires as he stands ready for battle, I will do; struck by trees and blows of my fists, he will retreat.
न मे गर्वितमायस्तं सहिष्यति दुरात्मवान्। कृतं तारे सहायत्वं दर्शितं सौहृदं मयि
That wicked one, swollen with pride, will not withstand me; you, Tara, have fulfilled your duty as a helper and shown your affection for me.
शापितासि मम प्राणैर्निवर्तस्व जनेन च। अलं जित्वा निवर्तिष्ये तमहं भ्रातरं रणे
I swear by my life, and by the people, you are forbidden; enough—after defeating him in battle, I will return, that brother of mine.
तं तु तारा परिष्वज्य वालिनं प्रियवादिनी। चकार रुदती मन्दं दक्षिणा सा प्रदक्षिणम्
Then Tara, speaking kindly, embraced Vali; weeping softly, she walked around him to the right.
ततः स्वस्त्ययनं कृत्वा मन्त्रविद् विजयैषिणी। अन्तःपुरं सह स्त्रीभिः प्रविष्टा शोकमोहिता
Then, after performing auspicious rites, the wise Tara, seeking victory, entered the inner chambers with the women, her heart weighed down by grief.
प्रविष्टायां तु तारायां सह स्त्रीभिः स्वमालयम्। नगर्या निर्ययौ क्रुद्धो महासर्प इव श्वसन्
When Tara had entered her own palace with the women, Vali, enraged, came out of the city like a great serpent hissing.
स निःश्वस्य महारोषो वाली परमवेगवान्। सर्वतश्चारयन् दृष्टिं शत्रुदर्शनकांक्षया
Vali, filled with intense anger, exhaled deeply and cast his gaze everywhere, eager to see his enemy.
स ददर्श ततः श्रीमान् सुग्रीवं हेमपिङ्गलम्। सुसंवीतमवष्टब्धं दीप्यमानमिवानलम्
Then that illustrious Vali saw Sugriva, golden-brown in hue, well-adorned and girded, blazing like fire.
स वाली गाढसंवीतो मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वीर्यवान्। सुग्रीवमेवाभिमुखो ययौ योद्धुं कृतक्षणः
Vali, tightly girded and full of strength, raised his fist and approached Sugriva, ready to fight at that very moment.
श्लिष्टं मुष्टिं समुद्यम्य संरब्धतरमागतः। सुग्रीवोऽपि समुद्दिश्य वालिनं हेममालिनम्
With his fist clenched, coming on even more furiously, Sugriva too, aiming at Vali adorned with gold, advanced.
तं वाली क्रोधताम्राक्षः सुग्रीवं रणकोविदम्। आपतन्तं महावेगमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Vali, his eyes reddened with anger, spoke these words to Sugriva, skilled in battle, as he rushed forward with great speed:
