पूर्वमापतितः क्रोधात् स त्वामाह्वयते युधि। निष्पत्य च निरस्तस्ते हन्यमानो दिशो गतः
Previously, driven by anger, he challenged you to battle; but when you went forth and defeated him, he fled in all directions as he was being struck.
त्वया तस्य निरस्तस्य पीडितस्य विशेषतः। इहैत्य पुनराह्वानं शङ्कां जनयतीव मे
Now, since you defeated and especially tormented him, his returning here to challenge you again arouses suspicion in me.
दर्पश्च व्यवसायश्च यादृशस्तस्य नर्दतः। निनादस्य च संरम्भो नैतदल्पं हि कारणम्
The arrogance and resolve he shows as he roars, and the agitation in his cry, are not without significant cause.
नासहायमहं मन्ये सुग्रीवं तमिहागतम्। अवष्टब्धसहायश्च यमाश्रित्यैष गर्जति
I do not think Sugrīva has come here alone; he must be relying on some steadfast ally, because of whom he now bellows.
प्रकृत्या निपुणश्चैव बुद्धिमांश्चैव वानरः। नापरीक्षितवीर्येण सुग्रीवः सख्यमेष्यति
By nature, the monkey is both skilled and intelligent; Sugrīva would not seek friendship with someone whose strength he has not tested.
अङ्गदस्तु कुमारोऽयं वनान्तमुपनिर्गतः। प्रवृत्तिस्तेन कथिता चारैरासीन्निवेदिता
This young prince Aṅgada has gone into the depths of the forest; the information he gathered was reported by the spies.
अयोध्याधिपतेः पुत्रौ शूरौ समरदुर्जयौ। इक्ष्वाकूणां कुले जातौ प्रथितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ
The two sons of the lord of Ayodhyā, renowned Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, born in the Ikṣvāku line, are valiant and unconquerable in battle.
सुग्रीवप्रियकामार्थं प्राप्तौ तत्र दुरासदौ। स ते भ्रातुर्हि विख्यातः सहायो रणकर्मणि
They have come there, difficult to approach, for the sake of fulfilling Sugrīva’s cherished desire; he is famed as your brother’s ally in the work of war.
रामः परबलामर्दी युगान्ताग्निरिवोत्थितः। निवासवृक्षः साधूनामापन्नानां परा गतिः
Rāma, destroyer of hostile forces, has arisen like the fire at the end of an age; he is a sheltering tree for the virtuous and the supreme refuge for those in distress.
आर्तानां संश्रयश्चैव यशसश्चैकभाजनम्। ज्ञानविज्ञानसम्पन्नो निदेशे निरतः पितुः
He is a refuge for the afflicted and the sole vessel of fame; endowed with knowledge and wisdom, he is devoted to carrying out his father’s command.
धातूनामिव शैलेन्द्रो गुणानामाकरो महान्। तत् क्षमो न विरोधस्ते सह तेन महात्मना
Like the lord of mountains is to minerals, so is he a great source of virtues; therefore, it is not fitting for you to be in conflict with that great soul.
दुर्जयेनाप्रमेयेण रामेण रणकर्मसु। शूर वक्ष्यामि ते किंचिन्न चेच्छाम्यभ्यसूयितुम्
With Rāma, unconquerable and immeasurable in battle, O hero, I will tell you something, not wishing to offend you.
श्रूयतां क्रियतां चैव तव वक्ष्यामि यद्धितम्। यौवराज्येन सुग्रीवं तूर्णं साध्वभिषेचय
Listen and act accordingly; I will tell you what is for your good: quickly and properly anoint Sugrīva as crown prince.
विग्रहं मा कृथा वीर भ्रात्रा राजन् यवीयसा। अहं हि ते क्षमं मन्ये तेन रामेण सौहृदम्
Do not, O hero, engage in conflict with your younger brother, O king; I consider friendship with Rāma to be fitting for you.
सुग्रीवेण च सम्प्रीतिं वैरमुत्सृज्य दूरतः। लालनीयो हि ते भ्राता यवीयानेष वानरः
Make peace with Sugrīva, casting enmity far away; your younger brother, this monkey, is to be cherished by you.
तत्र वा सन्निहस्थो वा सर्वथा बन्धुरेव ते। नहि तेन समं बन्धुं भुवि पश्यामि कंचन
Whether he is here or nearby, in every way he is your kinsman; for I see no other relative on earth equal to him.
दानमानादिसत्कारैः कुरुष्व प्रत्यनन्तरम्। वैरमेतत् समुत्सृज्य तव पार्श्वे स तिष्ठतु
With gifts, respect, and proper hospitality, make him your ally at once; let this enmity be abandoned, and let him remain by your side.
सुग्रीवो विपुलग्रीवो महाबन्धुर्मतस्तव। भ्रातृसौहृदमालम्ब्य नान्या गतिरिहास्ति ते
Sugriva, broad-necked and great-hearted, is, in my view, your chief ally; relying on the bond of brotherhood, you have no other path here.
यदि ते मत्प्रियं कार्यं यदि चावैषि मां हिताम्। याच्यमानः प्रियत्वेन साधु वाक्यं कुरुष्व मे
If you wish to do what pleases me, and if you consider me well-intentioned, then, being asked out of affection, kindly follow my advice.
प्रसीद पथ्यं शृणु जल्पितं हि मे न रोषमेवानुविधातुमर्हसि। क्षमो हि ते कोशलराजसूनुना न विग्रहः शक्रसमानतेजसा
Be gracious and listen to my wholesome words; you should not simply follow anger. For you are capable, O son of the king of Kosala, and there should be no conflict with one whose brilliance equals Indra's.
तदा हि तारा हितमेव वाक्यं तं वालिनं पथ्यमिदं बभाषे। न रोचते तद् वचनं हि तस्य कालाभिपन्नस्य विनाशकाले
Then Tara, speaking only what was beneficial, addressed Vali with these wholesome words; but those words did not please him, for, overtaken by fate, he was at the time of his destruction.

To Tara, whose face was radiant like the moon, as she spoke thus, Vali rebuked her and spoke these words.
गर्जतोऽस्य सुसंरब्धं भ्रातुः शत्रोर्विशेषतः। मर्षयिष्यामि केनापि कारणेन वरानने
Why should I, for any reason, tolerate the furious roaring of my brother, my enemy, O beautiful-faced one?
अधर्षितानां शूराणां समरेष्वनिवर्तिनाम्। धर्षणामर्षणं भीरु मरणादतिरिच्यते
For brave warriors, unassailable and unyielding in battle, to endure insult is more bitter than death, O timid one.
सोढुं न च समर्थोऽहं युद्धकामस्य संयुगे। सुग्रीवस्य च संरम्भं हीनग्रीवस्य गर्जितम्
I am not able to endure in battle the challenge of Sugriva, who desires combat, nor the roar of that weak-necked one.
न च कार्यो विषादस्ते राघवं प्रति मत्कृते। धर्मज्ञश्च कृतज्ञश्च कथं पापं करिष्यति
You should not grieve concerning Rāghava on my account; he knows righteousness and gratitude—how could he commit a wrongful act?
निवर्तस्व सह स्त्रीभिः कथं भूयोऽनुगच्छसि। सौहृदं दर्शितं तावन्मयि भक्तिस्त्वया कृता
Turn back with the women; why do you follow me further? You have already shown your friendship and devotion to me.
प्रतियोत्स्याम्यहं गत्वा सुग्रीवं जहि सम्भ्रमम्। दर्पं चास्य विनेष्यामि न च प्राणैर्वियोक्ष्यते
I will go and confront Sugriva; cast off your anxiety. I will subdue his pride, and he will not lose his life.
अहं ह्याजिस्थितस्यास्य करिष्यामि यदीप्सितम्। वृक्षैर्मुष्टिप्रहारैश्च पीडितः प्रतियास्यति
Whatever he desires as he stands ready for battle, I will do; struck by trees and blows of my fists, he will retreat.
