वाली विनिहतो यावद्वने पांसुषु चेष्टते। यदि दृष्टिपथं प्राप्तो जीवन् स विनिवर्तते
Until Vali, struck down, lies struggling in the dust of the forest, if he comes within my line of sight and turns back alive—
ततो दोषेण मागच्छेत् सद्यो गर्हेच्च मां भवान्। प्रत्यक्षं सप्त ते साला मया बाणेन दारिताः
Then, because of fault, you might immediately find blame with me; yet, right before you, seven sala trees have been pierced by my arrow.
धर्मलोभपरीतेन न च वक्ष्ये कथंचन। सफलां च करिष्यामि प्रतिज्ञां जहि संभ्रमम्
Overcome by desire for righteousness, I will never speak falsely; I will fulfill my promise—cast aside your hesitation.
प्रसूतं कलमक्षेत्रं वर्षेणेव शतक्रतुः। तदाह्वाननिमित्तं च वालिनो हेममालिनः
Just as Indra brings forth a field of ripened grain with rain, so too, for the sake of this challenge from Vali, the one adorned with a golden garland—
सुग्रीव कुरु तं शब्दं निष्पतेद् येन वानरः। जितकाशी जयश्लाघी त्वया चाधर्षितः पुरात्
Sugriva, make that call by which the monkey will come forth, the one who boasts of victory and has been provoked by you before.
निष्पतिष्यत्यसङ्गेन वाली स प्रियसंयुगः। रिपूणां धर्षितं श्रुत्वा मर्षयन्ति न संयुगे
Vali, eager for battle, will emerge without delay; hearing that his enemies have been challenged, he will not tolerate it in combat.
जानन्तस्तु स्वकं वीर्यं स्त्रीसमक्षं विशेषतः। स तु रामवचः श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवो हेमपिङ्गलः
Knowing his own strength, especially before women, Sugriva, golden-hued, listened to Rama's words.
ननर्द क्रूरनादेन विनिर्भिन्दन्निवाम्बरम्। तत्र शब्देन वित्रस्ता गावो यान्ति हतप्रभाः
He roared with a fierce sound, as if splitting the sky; at that noise, the cows, terrified, lost their brightness and fled.
राजदोषपरामृष्टाः कुलस्त्रिय इवाकुलाः। द्रवन्ति च मृगाः शीघ्रं भग्ना इव रणे हयाः। पतन्ति च खगा भूमौ क्षीणपुण्या इव ग्रहाः
Struck by the king's offense, like noble women in distress, the animals run swiftly, like horses broken in battle; birds fall to the earth, as if their merit is spent like planets.
ततः स जीमूतकृतप्रणादो नादं ह्यमुञ्चत् त्वरया प्रतीतः। सूर्यात्मजः शौर्यविवृद्धतेजाः सरित्पतिर्वाऽनिलचञ्चलोर्मिः
Then, with a thunderous cry like a rain cloud, the son of the sun, his valor and brilliance increased, released his sound with urgency, like the lord of rivers stirred by the wind.

अथ तस्य निनादं तं सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः। शुश्रावान्तःपुरगतो वाली भ्रातुरमर्षणः
Then, Vali, intolerant of his brother, heard that roar of the great-hearted Sugriva while inside the palace.
श्रुत्वा तु तस्य निनदं सर्वभूतप्रकम्पनम्। मदश्चैकपदे नष्टः क्रोधश्चापादितो महान्
Hearing that roar, which shook all creatures, his pride vanished at once, and great anger arose.
ततो रोषपरीताङ्गो वाली स कनकप्रभः। उपरक्त इवादित्यः सद्यो निष्प्रभतां गतः
Then, Vali, his body seized by rage, shining like gold, became suddenly dim, as if the sun were stained.
वाली दंष्ट्राकरालस्तु क्रोधाद् दीप्ताग्निलोचनः। भात्युत्पतितपद्माभः समृणाल इव ह्रदः
Vali, with fangs and hands, eyes blazing like fire from anger, shone like a lake with blooming lotuses and stalks.
शब्दं दुर्मर्षणं श्रुत्वा निष्पपात ततो हरिः। वेगेन च पदन्यासैर्दारयन्निव मेदिनीम्
Hearing that intolerable sound, the monkey leapt out, striking the earth with his swift steps as if tearing it apart.
तं तु तारा परिष्वज्य स्नेहाद् दर्शितसौहृदा। उवाच त्रस्तसम्भ्रान्ता हितोदर्कमिदं वचः
Tara embraced him, showing affection and friendship, and, trembling and anxious, spoke these words for his welfare.
साधु क्रोधमिमं वीर नदीवेगमिवागतम्। शयनादुत्थितः काल्यं त्यज भुक्तामिव स्रजम्
O hero, restrain this anger that has arisen like the surge of a river; rise from your bed in the morning and cast it off as you would a garland that has been worn.
काल्यमेतेन संग्रामं करिष्यसि च वानर। वीर ते शत्रुबाहुल्यं फल्गुता वा न विद्यते
You will engage in battle with him in the morning, O monkey; neither the multitude of your enemies nor any weakness is found in you, O hero.
सहसा तव निष्क्रामो मम तावन्न रोचते। श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि यन्निमित्तं निवार्यते
Your sudden advance does not please me just yet; listen, I will tell you the reason why you are being restrained.
पूर्वमापतितः क्रोधात् स त्वामाह्वयते युधि। निष्पत्य च निरस्तस्ते हन्यमानो दिशो गतः
Previously, driven by anger, he challenged you to battle; but when you went forth and defeated him, he fled in all directions as he was being struck.
त्वया तस्य निरस्तस्य पीडितस्य विशेषतः। इहैत्य पुनराह्वानं शङ्कां जनयतीव मे
Now, since you defeated and especially tormented him, his returning here to challenge you again arouses suspicion in me.
दर्पश्च व्यवसायश्च यादृशस्तस्य नर्दतः। निनादस्य च संरम्भो नैतदल्पं हि कारणम्
The arrogance and resolve he shows as he roars, and the agitation in his cry, are not without significant cause.
नासहायमहं मन्ये सुग्रीवं तमिहागतम्। अवष्टब्धसहायश्च यमाश्रित्यैष गर्जति
I do not think Sugrīva has come here alone; he must be relying on some steadfast ally, because of whom he now bellows.
प्रकृत्या निपुणश्चैव बुद्धिमांश्चैव वानरः। नापरीक्षितवीर्येण सुग्रीवः सख्यमेष्यति
By nature, the monkey is both skilled and intelligent; Sugrīva would not seek friendship with someone whose strength he has not tested.
अङ्गदस्तु कुमारोऽयं वनान्तमुपनिर्गतः। प्रवृत्तिस्तेन कथिता चारैरासीन्निवेदिता
This young prince Aṅgada has gone into the depths of the forest; the information he gathered was reported by the spies.
अयोध्याधिपतेः पुत्रौ शूरौ समरदुर्जयौ। इक्ष्वाकूणां कुले जातौ प्रथितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ
The two sons of the lord of Ayodhyā, renowned Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, born in the Ikṣvāku line, are valiant and unconquerable in battle.
सुग्रीवप्रियकामार्थं प्राप्तौ तत्र दुरासदौ। स ते भ्रातुर्हि विख्यातः सहायो रणकर्मणि
They have come there, difficult to approach, for the sake of fulfilling Sugrīva’s cherished desire; he is famed as your brother’s ally in the work of war.
रामः परबलामर्दी युगान्ताग्निरिवोत्थितः। निवासवृक्षः साधूनामापन्नानां परा गतिः
Rāma, destroyer of hostile forces, has arisen like the fire at the end of an age; he is a sheltering tree for the virtuous and the supreme refuge for those in distress.
आर्तानां संश्रयश्चैव यशसश्चैकभाजनम्। ज्ञानविज्ञानसम्पन्नो निदेशे निरतः पितुः
He is a refuge for the afflicted and the sole vessel of fame; endowed with knowledge and wisdom, he is devoted to carrying out his father’s command.
