वने वनचरांश्चान्यान् खेचरांश्च विहंगमान्। पश्यन्तस्त्वरिता जग्मुः सुग्रीववशवर्तिनः
Seeing other forest-dwelling creatures and birds flying in the sky, they hurried on, all under Sugrīva’s command.
एष मेघ इवाकाशे वृक्षषण्डः प्रकाशते। मेघसंघातविपुलः पर्यन्तकदलीवृतः
This grove of trees appears in the sky like a great cloud, vast as a mass of clouds, surrounded by clusters of plantains.
किमेतज्ज्ञातुमिच्छामि सखे कौतूहलं मम। कौतूहलापनयनं कर्तुमिच्छाम्यहं त्वया
What is this? I wish to know, my friend; my curiosity is aroused. I desire you to dispel my curiosity.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राघवस्य महात्मनः। गच्छन् नेवाचचक्षेऽथ सुग्रीवस्तन्महद् वनम्
Hearing these words of the great-souled Rāghava, Sugrīva, as he went, did not speak about that great forest.
एतद् राघव विस्तीर्णमाश्रमं श्रमनाशनम्। उद्यानवनसम्पन्नं स्वादुमूलफलोदकम्
O Rāghava, this is the vast hermitage that removes fatigue, rich with gardens and groves, and abundant with sweet roots, fruits, and water.
अत्र सप्तजना नाम मुनयः संशितव्रताः। सप्तैवासन्नधःशीर्षा नियतं जलशायिनः
Here dwell the seven sages called the Seven Seers, steadfast in their vows, always lying with their heads downward, and constantly resting in water.
सप्तरात्रे कृताहारा वायुनाचलवासिनः। दिवं वर्षशतैर्याताः सप्तभिः सकलेवराः
Subsisting on air for seven nights, dwelling on mountains, they ascended to heaven with their bodies after a hundred years.
तेषामेतत्प्रभावेण द्रुमप्राकारसंवृतम्। आश्रमं सुदुराधर्षमपि सेन्द्रैः सुरासुरैः
By their power, this hermitage, encircled by a wall of trees, is very difficult to approach, even for gods and demons together with Indra.
पक्षिणो वर्जयन्त्येतत् तथान्ये वनचारिणः। विशन्ति मोहाद् येऽप्यत्र न निवर्तन्ति ते पुनः
Birds and other forest creatures avoid this place; those who enter here out of delusion do not return again.
विभूषणरवाश्चात्र श्रूयन्ते सकलाक्षराः। तूर्यगीतस्वनश्चापि गन्धो दिव्यश्च राघव
Here, sounds of ornaments are heard, clear and distinct, as well as the music of instruments and singing, and a divine fragrance, O Rāghava.
त्रेताग्नयोऽपि दीप्यन्ते धूमो ह्येष प्रदृश्यते। वेष्टयन्निव वृक्षाग्रान् कपोताङ्गारुणो घनः
Even the sacrificial fires of the Tretā age are burning here; this smoke is seen, dense and tinged with pigeon-colored red, as if enveloping the treetops.
एते वृक्षाः प्रकाशन्ते धूमसंसक्तमस्तकाः। मेघजालप्रतिच्छन्ना वैडूर्यगिरयो यथा
These trees appear with their tops covered in smoke, like mountains of beryl veiled by masses of clouds.
कुरु प्रणामं धर्मात्मंस्तेषामुद्दिश्य राघव। लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा प्रयतः संहताञ्जलिः
O Rāghava, with joined palms, offer your reverent salutation to them, together with your brother Lakṣmaṇa, with focused mind.
प्रणमन्ति हि ये तेषामृषीणां भावितात्मनाम्। न तेषामशुभं किंचिच्छरीरे राम विद्यते
For those who bow to these sages of purified souls, O Rāma, no misfortune whatsoever befalls their bodies.
ततो रामः सह भ्रात्रा लक्ष्मणेन कृताञ्जलिः। समुद्दिश्य महात्मानस्तानृषीनभ्यवादयत्
Then Rāma, together with his brother Lakṣmaṇa, with joined hands, offered salutations to those great sages.
अभिवाद्य च धर्मात्मा रामो भ्राता च लक्ष्मणः। सुग्रीवो वानराश्चैव जम्मुः संहृष्टमानसाः
Having offered their salutations, the righteous Rāma and his brother Lakṣmaṇa, along with Sugrīva and the monkeys, proceeded with joyful hearts.
ते गत्वा दूरमध्वानं तस्मात् सप्तजनाश्रमात्। ददृशुस्तां दुराधर्षां किष्किन्धां वालिपालिताम्
Having traveled a long distance from the hermitage of the Seven Sages, they saw the formidable Kiṣkindhā, ruled by Vāli.
ततस्तु रामानुजरामवानराः प्रगृह्य शस्त्राण्युदितोग्रतेजसः। पुरीं सुरेशात्मजवीर्यपालितां वधाय शत्रोः पुनरागतास्त्विह
Then Rāma, his brother, and the monkeys, weapons in hand and their brilliance heightened, returned here to the city protected by the strength of the lord of the gods' son, for the destruction of the enemy.

Let the fourteenth chapter be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā section.
सर्वे ते त्वरितं गत्वा किष्किन्धां वालिनः पुरीम्। वृक्षैरात्मानमावृत्य व्यतिष्ठन् गहने वने
All of them quickly went to Kiṣkindhā, the city of Vāli, and, concealing themselves with trees, stood in the dense forest.
विसार्य सर्वतो दृष्टिं कानने काननप्रियः। सुग्रीवो विपुलग्रीवः क्रोधमाहारयद् भृशम्
Casting his gaze all around the forest, Sugrīva, whose neck was broad and who delighted in the woods, became greatly enraged.
ततस्तु निनदं घोरं कृत्वा युद्धाय चाह्वयत्। परिवारैः परिवृतो नादैर्भिन्दन्निवाम्बरम्
Then, letting out a terrible roar, he challenged to battle, surrounded by his retinue, making sounds as if splitting the sky.
गर्जन्निव महामेघो वायुवेगपुरःसरः। अथ बालार्कसदृशो दृप्तसिंहगतिस्ततः
Roaring like a great cloud driven by the force of the wind, he then moved forward, his gait proud as a lion and radiant like the rising sun.
दृष्ट्वा रामं क्रियादक्षं सुग्रीवो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। हरिवागुरया व्याप्तां तप्तकाञ्चनतोरणाम्
Seeing Rāma, skilled in action, Sugrīva spoke these words: 'We have reached Kiṣkindhā, adorned with golden gates and covered by a net of monkeys.'
प्राप्ताः स्म ध्वजयन्त्राढ्यां किष्किन्धां वालिनः पुरीम्। प्रतिज्ञा या कृता वीर त्वया वालिवधे पुरा
'We have arrived at Kiṣkindhā, the city of Vāli, rich with banners and machinery. O hero, fulfill now the vow you made before to slay Vāli.'
सफलां कुरु तां क्षिप्रं लतां काल इवागतः। एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मात्मा सुग्रीवेण स राघवः
'Fulfill that promise quickly, like Time itself that has arrived.' Thus addressed by Sugrīva, the righteous Rāghava replied.
तमेवोवाच वचनं सुग्रीवं शत्रुसूदनः। कृताभिज्ञानचिह्नस्त्वमनया गजसाह्वया
The destroyer of enemies, Rāma, spoke these words to Sugrīva: 'This garland, called Gajasāhvaya, which Lakṣmaṇa placed around your neck as a sign of recognition—'
लक्ष्मणेन समुत्पाट्य एषा कण्ठे कृता तव। शोभसेऽप्यधिकं वीर लतया कण्ठसक्तया
'—with this garland placed on your neck by Lakṣmaṇa, you shine even more, O hero, with the garland entwined around your neck.'
विपरीत इवाकाशे सूर्यो नक्षत्रमालया। अद्य वालिसमुत्थं ते भयं वैरं च वानर
'Just as the sun appears different in the sky when encircled by a garland of stars, so today, O monkey, your fear and enmity arising from Vāli—'
एकेनाहं प्रमोक्ष्यामि बाणमोक्षेण संयुगे। मम दर्शय सुग्रीव वैरिणं भ्रातृरूपिणम्
With a single arrow, I will release my shot in battle; show me, Sugriva, the enemy who appears as your brother.
