As he was flung with force, drops of blood from his mouth, carried by the wind, fell towards Matanga's hermitage.
Seeing those drops of blood fall there, the great sage, angered, wondered: 'Who is this?'
'By whom have I suddenly been touched with blood by this wicked one? Who is this evil-minded, unrestrained, foolish person?'
Having spoken thus, the eminent sage went out and saw the buffalo, mountain-like in form, lying dead on the ground.
Realizing through his ascetic power that this had been done by a monkey, he pronounced a great curse upon the monkey who had hurled it.
Here, entry is forbidden to him; if he enters, he will die—he who has defiled my hermitage, my refuge, with streams of blood.
By hurling trees, these have been broken, and the demonic body shattered; if anyone fills my hermitage, extending for a yojana all around—
If that wicked-minded one comes, he will surely perish; and any of his counselors who take refuge in my forest—
They too must not dwell here; let them leave as they please upon hearing this. If any of them remain, I will certainly curse them as well.
In this forest of mine, always protected as a son, for the destruction of leaves and shoots, and for the sake of fruits and roots—
Today is the limit; tomorrow, if I see that monkey, for many thousands of years he will become a mountain.
Hearing these words spoken by the sage, the monkeys departed from that forest; seeing them, Vali spoke.
Why have you all, dwellers of the Matanga forest, come together to me? Is all well with the forest-dwellers?
Then all the monkeys told Vali, adorned with golden garlands, the entire reason and the curse upon him.
Hearing this speech of the monkey, Vali then approached the great sage and, with joined palms, begged him.
The great sage, disregarding him, entered his hermitage; but Vali, fearful of bearing the curse, became distraught.
Therefore, out of fear of the curse, the monkey does not wish to enter the great mountain Rishyamuka, nor even to look upon it, O king.
Knowing of his inability to enter, O Rama, I wander this great forest with my counselors, free from anxiety.
This heap of bones, shining forth, is that of Dundubhi, vast as a mountain peak, cast down by Vali's might.
And here are these seven great sala trees, with spreading branches, from which Vali can shake down the leaves of one by his strength.
Thus have I shown you, Rama, his unmatched strength; how will you be able to slay Vali in battle, O king?
Lakṣmaṇa, laughing, said to Sugrīva as he spoke thus: In what deed accomplished would you trust in Vāli's death?
Then Sugrīva replied: These seven sāl trees here—Vāli once pierced each one, and not just once.
Rāma will split these trees with a single arrow; seeing Rāma's prowess, I will believe Vāli can be slain.
Lakṣmaṇa, Vāli once lifted and hurled the bones of a slain buffalo two hundred bow-lengths with one foot.
Having spoken thus, Sugrīva, his eyes bloodshot, meditated on Rāma for a moment, then again addressed him.
Vāli is a hero, proud of his valor, renowned for his strength and prowess; that mighty monkey is undefeated in battle.
Even the gods find his deeds difficult; reflecting on them, I fled to Ṛṣyamūka out of fear.
Thinking of that unconquerable, unassailable, wrathful monkey king, I have not left Ṛṣyamūka, O you.
Anxious and suspicious, I wander the great forest with my devoted ministers, led by Hanumān.
