अथ काले गते तस्मिन् षष्ठेऽहनि तदागते । सौमित्रिमब्रवीद् रामो यत्तो भव समाहितः ॥१-३०-
When the sixth day had passed and that time arrived, Rāma spoke to Saumitri: 'Be alert and attentive.'
रामस्यैवं ब्रुवाणस्य त्वरितस्य युयुत्सया । प्रजज्वाल ततो वेदिः सोपाध्यायपुरोहिता ॥१-३०-
As Rāma spoke thus, eager and ready for battle, the altar blazed forth, with teachers and priests present.
सदर्भचमसस्रुक्का स समित्कुसुमोच्चया । विश्वामित्रेण सहिता वेदिर्जज्वाल सर्त्विजा ॥१-३०-
The altar, adorned with darbha grass, ladles, and vessels, and heaps of sacrificial flowers, together with Viśvāmitra and the officiating priests, blazed brightly.
मन्त्रवच्च यथान्यायं यज्ञोऽसौ सम्प्रवर्तते । आकाशे च महाञ्छ्ब्दः प्रादुरासीद् भयानकः ॥१-३०-
The sacrifice proceeded according to the prescribed rites and mantras; then a great and terrifying sound arose in the sky.
आवार्य गगनं मेघो यथा प्रावृषि दृश्यते । तथा मायां विकुर्वाणौ राक्षसावभ्यधावताम् ॥१-३०-
A cloud covered the sky, as is seen in the rainy season; so too, the two rākṣasas, employing their magic, rushed forward.
मारीचश्च सुबाहुश्च तयोरनुचरास्तथा । आगम्य भीमसंकाशा रुधिरौघानवासृजन् ॥१-३०-
Mārīca and Subāhu, along with their followers, fierce as thunderclouds, arrived and poured down streams of blood.
ताम् तेन रुधिरौघेण वेदीं वीक्ष्य समुक्षिताम् । सहसाभिद्रुतो रामस्तानपश्यत् ततो दिवि ॥१-३०-
Seeing the altar drenched with that torrent of blood, Rāma swiftly rushed forward and saw them in the sky.
तावापतन्तौ सहसा दृष्ट्वा राजीवलोचनः । लक्ष्मणं त्वभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१-३०-
Seeing those two suddenly descending, the lotus-eyed prince looked at Lakṣmaṇa and spoke these words.
पश्य लक्ष्मण दुर्वृत्तान् राक्षसान् पिशिताशनान् । मानवास्त्रसमाधूताननिलेन यथा घनान् ॥१-३०-
Look, Lakṣmaṇa, at these wicked rākṣasas, eaters of flesh, driven by the force of the mānava missile, just as clouds are scattered by the wind.
करिष्यामि न संदेहो नोत्सहे हन्तुमीदृशान् । इत्युक्त्वा वचनं रामश्चापे संधाय वेगवान् ॥१-३०-
I will do it, there is no doubt; yet I cannot bring myself to kill such as these. Having spoken thus, swift Rama readied his bow.
मानवं परमोदारमस्त्रं परमभास्वरम् । चिक्षेप परमक्रुद्धो मारीचोरसि राघवः ॥१-३०-
Then, supremely noble and radiant, Raghava, in great anger, released the powerful Manava missile at Maricha's chest.
स तेन परमास्त्रेण मानवेन समाहतः । सम्पूर्णं योजनशतं क्षिप्तः सागरसम्प्लवे ॥१-३०-
Struck by that supreme Manava weapon, Maricha was hurled a full hundred yojanas into the ocean's surge.
विचेतनं विघूर्णन्तं शीतेषुबलपीडितम् । निरस्तं दृश्य मारीचं रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ॥१-३०-
Seeing Maricha, unconscious, spinning, and tormented by the chill force of the arrow, Rama spoke to Lakshmana.
पश्य लक्ष्मण शीतेषुं मानवं मनुसंहितम् । मोहयित्वा नयत्येनं न च प्राणैर्वियुज्यते ॥१-३०-
See, Lakshmana, the Manava arrow, composed by Manu, bewilders him and carries him away, yet does not take his life.
इमानपि वधिष्यामि निर्घृणान् दुष्टचारिणः । राक्षसान् पापकर्मस्थान् यज्ञघ्नान् रुधिराशनान् ॥१-३०-
These others too I shall slay—the merciless, the wicked-doers, the Rakshasas who destroy sacrifices and feast on blood.
इत्युक्त्वा लक्ष्मणं चाशु लाघवं दर्शयन्निव । विगृह्य सुमहच्चास्त्रमाग्नेयं रघुनन्दनः ॥१-३०-
Having spoken thus to Lakshmana, as if to display his skill, the descendant of Raghu took up the mighty Agneya missile.
सुबाहूरसि चिक्षेप स विद्धः प्रापतद् भुवि । शेषान् वायव्यमादाय निजघान महायशाः । राघवः परमोदारो मुनीनां मुदमावहन् ॥१-३०-
He hurled it at Subahu's chest; struck, Subahu fell to the ground. The illustrious Raghava then seized the Vayavya weapon and destroyed the rest, bringing joy to the sages.
स हत्वा राक्षसान् सर्वान् यज्ञघ्नान् रघुनन्दनः । ऋषिभिः पूजितस्तत्र यथेन्द्रो विजये पुरा ॥१-३०-
Having slain all the Rakshasas who destroyed sacrifices, the delight of the Raghus was honored there by the sages, as Indra was once honored in victory.
अथ यज्ञे समाप्ते तु विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः । निरीतिका दिशो दृष्ट्वा काकुत्स्थमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१-३०-
When the sacrifice was complete, the great sage Vishvamitra, seeing the quarters cleared of evil, spoke to Kakutstha as follows:
कृतार्थोऽस्मि महाबाहो कृतं गुरुवचस्त्वया । सिद्धाश्रममिदं सत्यं कृतं वीर महायशः । स हि रामं प्रशस्यैवं ताभ्यां संध्यामुपागमत् ॥१-३०-
O mighty-armed one, my purpose is fulfilled; you have accomplished your teacher's command. O illustrious hero, you have truly sanctified this Siddhashrama. Thus praising Rama, he approached the evening rites with the two princes.

अथ तां रजनीं तत्र कृतार्थौ रामलक्षणौ । ऊषतुर्मुदितौ वीरौ प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥१-३१-
Then, having accomplished their purpose, Rama and Lakshmana spent that night there, the two heroes joyful and delighted in their hearts.
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां कृतपौर्वाह्णिकक्रियौ । विश्वामित्रमृषींश्चान्यान्सहितावभिजग्मतुः ॥१-३१-
When the night had passed, having performed their morning rites, they approached Vishvamitra and the other sages together.
अभिवाद्य मुनिश्रेष्ठं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम् । ऊचतुर्परमोदारं वाक्यं मधुरभाषिणौ ॥१-३१-
Having greeted the foremost sage, blazing like fire, the two, speaking sweetly, addressed him with supremely noble words.
इमौ स्म मुनिशार्दूल किङ्करौ समुपागतौ । आज्ञापय मुनिश्रेष्ठ शासनं करवाव किम् ॥१-३१-
O tiger among sages, here we stand as your attendants. Command us, best of sages—what shall we do?
एवमुक्ते तयोर्वाक्ये सर्व एव महर्षयः । विश्वामित्रं पुरस्कृत्य रामं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥१-३१-
When they had spoken thus, all the great sages, with Vishvamitra at their head, addressed Rama.
मैथिलस्य नरश्रेष्ठ जनकस्य भविष्यति । यज्ञः परमधर्मिष्ठस्तत्र यास्यामहे वयम् ॥१-३१-
O best of men, Janaka, king of Mithila, will perform a most righteous sacrifice. There we shall go.
त्वं चैव नरशार्दूल सहास्माभिर्गमिष्यसि । अद्भुतं च धनूरत्नं तत्र त्वं द्रष्टुमर्हसि ॥१-३१-
And you too, O tiger among men, shall go with us; there you are worthy to behold the wondrous, precious bow.
तद्धि पूर्वं नरश्रेष्ठ दत्तं सदसि दैवतैः । अप्रमेयबलं घोरं मखे परमभास्वरम् ॥१-३१-
That, O best of men, was formerly given in the assembly by the gods—an immeasurably powerful and terrible bow, shining supremely at the sacrifice.
नास्य देवा न गन्धर्वा नासुरा न च राक्षसाः । कर्तुमारोपणं शक्ता न कथञ्चन मानुषाः ॥१-३१-
Neither gods, nor gandharvas, nor asuras, nor rākṣasas, nor any humans whatsoever are able to string it.
