विक्रोशमानस्य तु मे सुग्रीवेति पुनः पुनः। यतः प्रतिवचो नास्ति ततोऽहं भृशदुःखितः
Though I called out again and again, 'Sugrīva!', and received no reply, I was greatly distressed.
पादप्रहारैस्तु मया बहुभिः परिपातितम्। ततोऽहं तेन निष्क्रम्य पथा पुरमुपागतः
With many blows of my feet, I battered the entrance; then, by that means, I emerged and returned to the city.
तत्रानेनास्मि संरुद्धो राज्यं मृगयताऽऽत्मनः। सुग्रीवेण नृशंसेन विस्मृत्य भ्रातृसौहृदम्
There, I was barred from the kingdom by Sugrīva, who, seeking the throne for himself, cruelly forgot the bond of brotherhood.
एवमुक्त्वा तु मां तत्र वस्त्रेणैकेन वानरः। तदा निर्वासयामास वाली विगतसाध्वसः
Having said this, Vāli, now fearless, exiled me from there with only a single garment.
तेनाहमपविद्धश्च हृतदारश्च राघव। तद्भयाच्च महीं सर्वां क्रान्तवान् सवनार्णवाम्
Thus cast out by him and deprived of my wife, O Rāghava, I wandered the whole earth, forests and seas, out of fear of him.
ऋष्यमूकं गिरिवरं भार्याहरणदुःखितः। प्रविष्टोऽस्मि दुराधर्षं वालिनः कारणान्तरे
Grieving for my abducted wife, I entered the great mountain Ṛṣyamūka, which Vāli could not approach for another reason.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं वैरानुकथनं महत्। अनागसा मया प्राप्तं व्यसनं पश्य राघव
Thus I have told you everything, the full account of this enmity; see, O Rāghava, how I, though blameless, have come to this misfortune.
वालिनश्च भयात् तस्य सर्वलोकभयापह। कर्तुमर्हसि मे वीर प्रसादं तस्य निग्रहात्
Because of fear of Vāli, who terrifies all the worlds, O hero, you ought to grant me your favor by restraining him.
एवमुक्तः स तेजस्वी धर्मज्ञो धर्मसंहितम्। वचनं वक्तुमारेभे सुग्रीवं प्रहसन्निव
Thus addressed, the radiant and righteous one, knowing the law, began to speak words of justice to Sugrīva, as if smiling.
अमोघाः सूर्यसंकाशा निशिता मे शरा इमे। तस्मिन् वालिनि दुर्वृत्ते पतिष्यन्ति रुषान्विताः
These arrows of mine, unfailing, sharp, and shining like the sun, will fall upon that wicked Vāli, filled with wrath.
यावत् तं नहि पश्येयं तव भार्यापहारिणम्। तावत् स जीवेत् पापात्मा वाली चारित्रदूषकः
As long as I do not see that Vāli, the abductor of your wife, that evil-hearted destroyer of virtue shall live.
आत्मानुमानात् पश्यामि मग्नस्त्वं शोकसागरे। त्वामहं तारयिष्यामि बाढं प्राप्स्यसि पुष्कलम्
By my own judgment, I see you are submerged in an ocean of sorrow; I will surely rescue you, and you will attain abundant happiness.
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा हर्षपौरुषवर्धनम्। सुग्रीवः परमप्रीतः सुमहद्वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Hearing those words, which increased his joy and courage, Sugrīva, greatly pleased, spoke these excellent words.

रामस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा हर्षपौरुषवर्धनम्। सुग्रीवः पूजयांचक्रे राघवं प्रशशंस च
Hearing Rāma's words, which increased his joy and courage, Sugrīva honored Rāghava and praised him.
असंशयं प्रज्वलितैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मर्मातिगैः शरैः। त्वं दहेः कुपितो लोकान् युगान्त इव भास्करः
Without doubt, with blazing, sharp arrows that pierce the vital points, you could burn the worlds in anger, like the sun at the end of an age.
वालिनः पौरुषं यत्तद् यच्च वीर्यं धृतिश्च या। तन्ममैकमनाः श्रुत्वा विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम्
Hear with full attention about Vāli's strength, valor, and steadfastness; then act as you see fit.
समुद्रात् पश्चिमात् पूर्वं दक्षिणादपि चोत्तरम्। क्रामत्यनुदिते सूर्ये वाली व्यपगतक्लमः
From the western ocean to the east, and from the south to the north, Vāli, free from fatigue, traverses when the sun has not yet risen.
अग्राण्यारुह्य शैलानां शिखराणि महान्त्यपि। ऊर्ध्वमुत्पात्य तरसा प्रतिगृह्णाति वीर्यवान्
Climbing the highest peaks of mountains, even the greatest ones, he leaps upward with force and catches them, such is his might.
बहवः सारवन्तश्च वनेषु विविधा द्रुमाः। वालिना तरसा भग्ना बलं प्रथयताऽऽत्मनः
Many sturdy and various trees in the forests have been broken by Vāli's strength, as he displays his power.
महिषो दुन्दुभिर्नाम कैलासशिखरप्रभः। बलं नागसहस्रस्य धारयामास वीर्यवान्
There was a mighty buffalo named Dundubhi, shining like the peak of Kailāsa, who possessed the strength of a thousand elephants.
स वीर्योत्सेकदुष्टात्मा वरदानेन मोहितः। जगाम स महाकायः समुद्रं सरितां पतिम्
That great-bodied one, intoxicated by his own strength and deluded by a boon, went to the ocean, lord of rivers.
ऊर्मिमन्तमतिक्रम्य सागरं रत्नसंचयम्। मम युद्धं प्रयच्छेति तमुवाच महार्णवम्
Crossing the wavy, jewel-filled ocean, he said to the great sea, 'Grant me battle.'
ततः समुद्रो धर्मात्मा समुत्थाय महाबलः। अब्रवीद् वचनं राजन्नसुरं कालचोदितम्
Then the ocean, righteous and mighty, rose up and spoke these words to the asura, prompted by fate.
शैलराजो महारण्ये तपस्विशरणं परम्। शंकरश्वशुरो नाम्ना हिमवानिति विश्रुतः
The king of mountains, a great refuge for ascetics in the vast forest, renowned as Himavat, the father-in-law of Śaṃkara by name.
महाप्रस्रवणोपेतो बहुकन्दरनिर्झरः। स समर्थस्तव प्रीतिमतुलां कर्तुमर्हति
Endowed with great cascades, many caves and waterfalls, he is able to grant you incomparable satisfaction.
तं भीतमिति विज्ञाय समुद्रमसुरोत्तमः। हिमवद्वनमागम्य शरश्चापादिव च्युतः
Knowing him to be afraid, the best of asuras, like an arrow released from a bow, went to the Himavat forest.
ततस्तस्य गिरेः श्वेता गजेन्द्रप्रतिमाः शिलाः। चिक्षेप बहुधा भूमौ दुन्दुभिर्विननाद च
Then Dundubhi hurled the white, elephant-like stones from that mountain in many directions upon the ground, and roared loudly.
ततः श्वेताम्बुदाकारः सौम्यः प्रीतिकराकृतिः। हिमवानब्रवीद् वाक्यं स्व एव शिखरे स्थितः
At that moment, the gentle and pleasing Himavat, resembling a white cloud, spoke these words while standing on his own peak.
क्लेष्टुमर्हसि मां न त्वं दुन्दुभे धर्मवत्सल। रणकर्मस्वकुशलस्तपस्विशरणो ह्यहम्
O Dundubhi, devoted to righteousness, you should not trouble me; I am skilled in the duties of ascetics and a refuge for the austere, not in the acts of battle.
