By fortune you have arrived safely, and the enemy has been slain by you; for me, who was helpless, you alone are the protector, O joy of the helpless.
This many-ribbed umbrella, shining like the full moon, with yak-tail fan, accept it, which I have held for you.
Afflicted, I remained at the entrance of the cave for a year, O king; and seeing blood at the doorway, rising from the cave.
My heart overwhelmed by grief, my senses greatly disturbed; then I sealed the cave entrance with a mountain peak.
Departing from that place, I entered Kiṣkindhā again; but here, seeing me, the citizens and counselors were sorrowful.
I was anointed not by desire; you should forgive me; you alone are worthy of honor as king, and I am as before.
This appointment to kingship was made for me due to your absence; with ministers, citizens, and city, the realm stands with its thorns removed.
This kingdom is entrusted to you; I hand it over; do not be angry, gentle one, slayer of enemies.
I was appointed to kingship, desiring to conquer the empty land; as I spoke affectionately thus, that monkey rebuked me.
Saying 'Fie upon you!' to me, he spoke much else; he assembled the people and the approved counselors.
He addressed me among friends with words of utmost reproach: 'You all know, by me, that Māyāvī, the great demon, at night.'
Long ago, when he was enraged and eager for battle, he challenged me; hearing his words, I left the royal city.
My fierce brother swiftly followed after me; but when that mighty one saw me at night, not alone but with another,
He, terrified and seized by fear upon seeing us approach together, fled; rushing swiftly, he entered a great cavern.
Knowing that he had entered that dreadful, vast cave, my brother, grim in aspect, then said to me:
"Without killing him, I have no power to return to the city; wait at the cave's entrance until I slay him."
Thinking, 'He is waiting here,' I entered that difficult-to-approach place; as I searched for him there, a year passed.
There I saw my enemy, terrifying and relentless; I slew him at once, along with all his kin.
From his mouth, a torrent of blood flowed, filling that impassable cave, and it resounded upon the earth.
Having slain that powerful foe, I sought to leave, but I could not see the cave's sealed entrance.
Though I called out again and again, 'Sugrīva!', and received no reply, I was greatly distressed.
With many blows of my feet, I battered the entrance; then, by that means, I emerged and returned to the city.
There, I was barred from the kingdom by Sugrīva, who, seeking the throne for himself, cruelly forgot the bond of brotherhood.
Having said this, Vāli, now fearless, exiled me from there with only a single garment.
Thus cast out by him and deprived of my wife, O Rāghava, I wandered the whole earth, forests and seas, out of fear of him.
Grieving for my abducted wife, I entered the great mountain Ṛṣyamūka, which Vāli could not approach for another reason.
Thus I have told you everything, the full account of this enmity; see, O Rāghava, how I, though blameless, have come to this misfortune.
Because of fear of Vāli, who terrifies all the worlds, O hero, you ought to grant me your favor by restraining him.
Thus addressed, the radiant and righteous one, knowing the law, began to speak words of justice to Sugrīva, as if smiling.
These arrows of mine, unfailing, sharp, and shining like the sun, will fall upon that wicked Vāli, filled with wrath.
