शङ्कया त्वेतयाहं च दृष्ट्वा त्वामपि राघव। नोपसर्पाम्यहं भीतो भये सर्वे हि बिभ्यति
Because of this suspicion, O Rāghava, even seeing you, I do not approach, for in fear everyone is afraid.
केवलं हि सहाया मे हनुमत्प्रमुखास्त्विमे। अतोऽहं धारयाम्यद्य प्राणान् कृच्छ्रगतोऽपि सन्
Only these companions of mine, with Hanumān at their head, are with me; thus, even in great distress, I am able to sustain my life today.
एते हि कपयः स्निग्धा मां रक्षन्ति समन्ततः। सह गच्छन्ति गन्तव्ये नित्यं तिष्ठन्ति चास्थिते
These affectionate monkeys protect me on all sides, always accompany me when I must go, and remain with me wherever I stay.
संक्षेपस्त्वेष मे राम किमुक्त्वा विस्तरं हि ते। स मे ज्येष्ठो रिपुर्भ्राता वाली विश्रुतपौरुषः
This, O Rāma, is the summary; why should I tell you the full account? My elder brother Vāli, famed for his strength, is both my enemy and my brother.
तद्विनाशेऽपि मे दुःखं प्रमृष्टं स्यादनन्तरम्। सुखं मे जीवितं चैव तद्विनाशनिबन्धनम्
Even after his destruction, my sorrow would only be wiped away afterward; my happiness and very life depend on his downfall.
एष मे राम शोकान्तः शोकार्तेन निवेदितः। दुःखितः सुखितो वापि सख्युर्नित्यं सखा गतिः
This, O Rāma, is the end of my sorrow, as told by one afflicted by grief; whether in sorrow or happiness, a friend always seeks refuge in a friend.
श्रुत्वैतच्च वचो रामः सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत्। किं निमित्तमभूद् वैरं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
Hearing these words, Rāma spoke to Sugrīva: 'I wish to hear the true cause of your enmity.'
सुखं हि कारणं श्रुत्वा वैरस्य तव वानर। आनन्तर्याद् विधास्यामि सम्प्रधार्य बलाबलम्
'For, O monkey, once I have heard the cause of your enmity, I will act promptly, considering both strength and weakness.'
बलवान् हि ममामर्षः श्रुत्वा त्वामवमानितम्। वर्धते हृदयोत्कम्पी प्रावृड्वेग इवाम्भसः
'Indeed, my anger grows strong upon hearing of your humiliation, swelling in my heart like the rush of water in the rainy season.'
हृष्टः कथय विस्रब्धो यावदारोप्यते धनुः। सृष्टश्च हि मया बाणो निरस्तश्च रिपुस्तव
'Speak freely and without fear, while I string my bow; for I have already set my arrow and your enemy is as good as destroyed.'
एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवः काकुत्स्थेन महात्मना। प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे चतुर्भिः सह वानरैः
Thus addressed by the noble son of Kākutstha, Sugrīva, together with his four monkey companions, felt incomparable joy.
ततः प्रहृष्टवदनः सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणाग्रजे। वैरस्य कारणं तत्त्वमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे
Then, his face beaming with delight, Sugrīva began to recount to Lakṣmaṇa's elder brother the true cause of the enmity.

Listen now to the ninth chapter.
वाली नाम मम भ्राता ज्येष्ठः शत्रुनिषूदनः। पितुर्बहुमतो नित्यं मम चापि तथा पुरा
Vāli is my elder brother, a destroyer of foes, always highly regarded by our father and formerly by me as well.
पितर्युपरते तस्मिन् ज्येष्ठोऽयमिति मन्त्रिभिः। कपीनामीश्वरो राज्ये कृतः परमसम्मतः
When our father passed away, the ministers, considering him the eldest, made him the lord of the monkeys and ruler of the kingdom, with the highest approval.
राज्यं प्रशासतस्तस्य पितृपैतामहं महत्। अहं सर्वेषु कालेषु प्रणतः प्रेष्यवत् स्थितः
While he ruled the great kingdom inherited from his father and grandfather, I always remained bowed, like a servant, at all times.
मायावी नाम तेजस्वी पूर्वजो दुन्दुभेः सुतः। तेन तस्य महद्वैरं वालिनः स्त्रीकृतं पुरा
There was a powerful being named Māyāvi, the elder son of Dundubhi; he had a great enmity with Vāli, because of a woman, in the past.
स तु सुप्ते जने रात्रौ किष्किन्धाद्वारमागतः। नर्दति स्म सुसंरब्धो वालिनं चाह्वयद् रणे
One night, while everyone was asleep, he came to the entrance of Kiṣkindhā, roaring fiercely in anger and challenging Vāli to battle.
प्रसुप्तस्तु मम भ्राता नर्दतो भैरवस्वनम्। श्रुत्वा न ममृषे वाली निष्पपात जवात् तदा
My brother, though asleep, heard his terrifying roar; Vāli could not tolerate it and immediately sprang out with speed.
स तु वै निःसृतः क्रोधात् तं हन्तुमसुरोत्तमम्। वार्यमाणस्ततः स्त्रीभिर्मया च प्रणतात्मना
Then, driven by anger, he rushed out to kill that foremost asura, though he was restrained by the women and by me, who humbly pleaded with him.
स तु निर्धूय सर्वान् नो निर्जगाम महाबलः। ततोऽहमपि सौहार्दान्निःसृतो वालिना सह
But shaking us all off, that mighty one went out; then, out of friendship, I too went out together with Vāli.
तस्मिन् द्रवति संत्रस्ते ह्यावां द्रुततरं गतौ। प्रकाशोऽपि कृतो मार्गश्चन्द्रेणोद्गच्छता तदा
As he fled in terror, we both pursued him even faster; the path was illuminated by the rising moon at that time.
स तृणैरावृतं दुर्गं धरण्या विवरं महत्। प्रविवेशासुरो वेगादावामासाद्य विष्ठितौ
That asura, moving swiftly, entered a great cavern in the earth, covered with grass, while we stood nearby.
तं प्रविष्टं रिपुं दृष्ट्वा बिलं रोषवशं गतः। मामुवाच ततो वाली वचनं क्षुभितेन्द्रियः
Seeing the enemy enter the cave, Vāli, overcome by anger, spoke to me with agitated senses.
इह तिष्ठाद्य सुग्रीव बिलद्वारि समाहितः। यावदत्र प्रविश्याहं निहन्मि समरे रिपुम्
'Stay here today, Sugrīva, attentively at the mouth of the cave, while I enter and slay the enemy in battle.'
मया त्वेतद् वचः श्रुत्वा याचितः स परंतपः। शापयित्वा च मां पद्भ्यां प्रविवेश बिलं ततः
Hearing these words from him, I begged that great warrior; after cursing me, he entered the cave on foot.
तस्य प्रविष्टस्य बिलं साग्रः संवत्सरो गतः। स्थितस्य च बिलद्वारि स कालो व्यत्यवर्तत
After he entered the cave, a full year passed as I remained at the cave's entrance; thus, that time elapsed.
अहं तु नष्टं तं ज्ञात्वा स्नेहादागतसम्भ्रमः। भ्रातरं न प्रपश्यामि पापशङ्कि च मे मनः
But when I realized he was lost, I became anxious out of affection; I could not see my brother, and my mind was filled with fearful suspicion.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य बिलात् तस्माद् विनिःसृतम्। सफेनं रुधिरं दृष्ट्वा ततोऽहं भृशदुःखितः
Then, after a long time, I saw frothy blood emerge from that cave; because of this, I was greatly distressed.
नर्दतामसुराणां च ध्वनिर्मे श्रोत्रमागतः। न रतस्य च संग्रामे क्रोशतोऽपि स्वनो गुरोः
The sound of asuras roaring reached my ears, but I did not hear the voice of my brother, even as he might have cried out in battle.
